That’s it from this game then! The hosts take a 1-0 lead in the series. Two more games to go. The second one will be played on the 9th of this month again at Sharjah. That game will begin at 10 am GMT but you can join us an hour in advance for the build up. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the captain of Afghanistan says that he is quite happy about the performance and is looking forward to the next game. Adds that they did believe they could defend 235 runs and given how Nabi played, they looked to get around 220 runs and then the bowlers did an amazing job. On AM Ghazanfar, he says that he is a special talent and a good kid and in the second spell, he was just on the money. On Gurbaz's injury, he mentions that thankfully they have backups and good young cricketers and it is unfortunate that Ibrahim and Mujeeb aren't there but hopefully, Gurbaz recovers for the next game.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh's captain, says his team started well in the first innings in the first couple of overs but when Nabi came, his team got rattled out a little bit. Batting was the primary reason for this loss. His wicket was the main difference in this match because at least one batsman has to out bat out throughout the innings and there is none from him who could have done. He praises Nabi and Rashid Khan where they bowled beautifully and Afghanistan kept really tight from the start. He congratulates Afghanistan for winning this match and he will come back stronger in the next match.

AM Ghazanfar has been adjudged the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant six-wicket haul.

The presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the day, after being asked to field first, Bangladesh’s pacers ran through the top order of Afghanistan but Hashmatullah Shahidi, Mohammad Nabi and the lower order did very well to get them to a competitive score which in the end proved to be enough by a big margin.

For the hosts, it was the spinners who did the trick. AM Ghazanfar continued a fine start to his career with a six-fer. He was well supported by Rashid Khan and also Mohammad Nabi who got the main wicket of Najmul Hossain Shanto. Let me remind you, Afghanistan were guilty of dropping quite a few chances but still came out on top easily.

That was a collapse of gigantic proportions! At one stage, Bangladesh were cruising. They lost a wicket early but then it was Soumya Sarkar and  Najmul Hossain Shanto who steadied things. Shanto then continued the good work with Mehidy Hasan but once he fell, it was a procession. The lower order surrendered and it ended up being a big defeat for the visitors and their wait for a first ODI win in Sharjah continues, 29 years and counting.

OUT! BOWLED'EM! AM Ghazanfar deservedly wraps things up and Afghanistan come back from the brink to snatch a comfortable win. This is nicely tossed up, a tad full and around off, it is the carrom ball yet again. This one pitches and turns in, Shoriful Islam goes down on one knee looking for the big slog but misses and the ball crashes into the stumps. Ghaznafar finishes off with 6 wickets and Afghanistan win by 92 runs.

34.20

Oh, Shoriful Islam looked to send that one into orbit! Slows it up a bit and tosses it on off, Shoriful with a big slog across the line but only manages an inside edge onto the pads.

OUT! TIMBER! A stellar five-wicket haul for Afghan sensation AM Ghazanfar and Afghanistan just a couple of wickets away from victory here. Comes from around the wicket to the left-hander and bowls another flicker which is the carrom ball, landing it a touch full around off. Taskin Ahmed strides across to block but the ball turns in and beats the inside edge to crash into the stumps. What a turnaround from the Afghan spinners!

Taskin Ahmed is the next man in.

32.5W

OUT! LBW! Nicely bowled and the appeal has been listened to as the umpire raises his finger. Seemed like yet another carrom ball from AM Ghazanfar, this one on a dragged length and sliding it into middle and leg stump. Rishad Hossain gets pegged back and looks to flick it away but the ball holds its line and beats the bat to hit the pads. It is reviewed but there's nothing on UltraEdge and Ball Tracking shows that it would have just clipped the top of the stumps which means the onfield decision stands and Bangladesh lose their seventh wicket.

32.41

On a length and angled into the pads, Towhid Hridoy flicks it off the inner edge and the ball lobs up off the pads on the leg side. They scamper through for a run.

32.30

Darted in just a tad short and on the stumps, Towhid Hridoy backs away and keeps it out on the off side.

Another carrom ball from Ghaznafar but this one lands perfectly, full on off, angling in and then just leaves the batter. Mushfiqur Rahim leans on to flick it away but plays all around it and is drawn out of his crease as well. Commentary

We are back for the run chase! The Afghanistan can be seen getting a pep talk from their skipper before taking to the field. The two umpires are also out in the middle and it will be the duo of Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar to open the innings for Bangladesh. Fazalhaq Farooqi has the new ball in hand and will look to get some early swing. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Now, this is by no means going to be an easy chase, Bangladesh haven’t had the best of the times with the bat and Afghanistan have a top bowling lineup. The visitors will be tested but the question is, can they overcome the test? We will find out in a bit. Stay tuned.

The Bangladesh pacers were excellent with the new ball. Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam didn’t give away a lot and also picked wickets. Once the ball lost its shine, the ball came on nicely onto the bat and the bowlers seemed less effective. Bangladesh will be disappointed with the spinners who failed to pick a wicket. The pacers though came back strongly in the end to keep Afghanistan below a par score with Taskin and Fizz both ending with four wickets each.

That’s a fine recovery from Afghanistan. Had they been given over 220 when they were 4 down for not a lot, they would have surely taken it. The top order was dismissed inside Powerplay 1 but then Gulbadin Naib and Hashmatullah Shahidi put up a small stand to steady things. Naib fell when he just started to get going but then came the stand which got Afghanistan back into the game. A 100-plus stand between Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mohammad Nabi with both scoring fifties. When they were batting 250 looked possible but wickets towards the end have seen them fall short of that mark but still get to a competitive score thanks to Nangeyalia Kharote and his useful 27 runs from 28 balls.

49.41W

OUT! RUN OUT! That's it, Bangladesh have finally managed to bundle out Afghanistan but Shoriful Islam is visibly upset and rightly so. Gull and straight from Shoriful, angling in, Kharote squeezes it out towards deep mid-wicket and picks up a single but they want two again and start running. Towhid Hridoy fires in a throw at the bowler's end and Shoriful takes off the bails. Fazalhaq Farooqi is well short and Afghanistan finish with 235 on the board.

49.32

There should never have been two there. Full and tailing into the legs, Kharote takes the front leg out and jams it towards deep mid-wicket. They pick up a single and Fazalhaq Farooqi pushes for the double. Kharote runs towards the danger end and dives in to safety, poor throw from the deep as well.

49.22

Good running and presence of mind as well. Full and straight right in the blockhole, Kharote with an attempted helicopter shot and this is squeezed away past square leg for a couple of runs.

49.10

Bowled well into the deck and around off, Nangeyalia Kharote looks to go hard at the pull but there's not much room and this is miscued down to mid on.

48.50

Goes wider of the crease and howls it on a hard length, angling it back in from outside off, Kharote looks to cut again but misses.

48.44

FOUR! Another top shot from Kharote! Mustafizur Rahman goes back to the slower one and bowls it short and wide this time, Kharote backs away and smashes the cut shot past point for another boundary.

48.30

Bowled short and at the bodyline, Kharote looks to pull but misses and wears it on the biceps.

48.20

Much better from the Fizz! Seam-up this time, on a good length and around off, coming back in sharply, Kharote looks to block but is well beaten.

48.16

SIX! Nangeyalia Kharote, you beauty! Too predictable from Mustafizur Rahman, full and wide as well. Kharote stays back and sets himself well before smacking it straight back over the bowler's head for a biggie.

Excellent review! Hard-length delivery from Taskin Ahmed, on off and angling back in. Fazalhaq Farooqi gets pegged back and looks to block but is beaten past the outside edge and gets pinged on the pads. There is a loud appeal and the finger is raised but it is reviewed. Nothing on UltraEdge but Ball Tracking shows that it is too high and the decision is reversed.

47.50

No hat-trick! Goes full and straight again, Fazalhaq Farooqi is expecting the same and is able to get his bat down in time and blocks it off.

47.4W

OUT! TIMBER! Taskin Ahmed with the double whammy! Taskin goes quick and straight and full at the stumps to the new batter. AM Ghazanfar hangs back and gives himself room to smash the ball away but misses. The ball castles into the stumps and all of a sudden Taskin is on a hat-trick and it will be Fazalhaq Farooqi to face the hat-trick ball.

47.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! Taskin Ahmed gets the big fish and there will be no century for Mohammad Nabi but a fine, fine knock nonetheless from Mr. President. Taskin digs in a slower bumper and bowls it at an awkward line right around the face. Nabi looks to take it on but mistimes the pull high up towards deep square leg where Tanzid Hasan settles under it and completes a safe catch.

AM Ghazanfar is the next batter in.

47.31wd

WIDE! Slower one, bowled short and wide outside off, too wide though.

47.21

Dug in short now and angled well across off, Kharote reaches out and plays it through the cover region for a single.

47.14

FOUR! Nangeyalia Kharote getting into the act now! Back of a length and outside off, Kharote hangs back and cuts it firmly and well behind point for a boundary.

46.46

SIX! Up, up and away! Pace off again from Mustafizur Rahman, dug in short and over middle. Mohammad Nabi read it brilliantly and waited for it before muscling it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie.

46.31

Slower one, the cutter from Fizz, bowled a bit full and wide, Kharote just taps it behind point for a single.

46.22lb

Handy runs again! Slower one, on a length and just angled down leg, Kharote misses the flick and the ball goes off the pads down to fine leg and they pick up a couple of leg byes now. Sloppy fielding again from Bangladesh.

Tanzid is left bamboozled and Bangladesh lose their first wicket.

OUT! CAUGHT! Taskin Ahmed gets the big fish and there will be no century for Mohammad Nabi but a fine, fine knock nonetheless from Mr. President. Taskin digs in a slower bumper and bowls it at an awkward line right around the face. Uh, oh! Early trouble here for Rahmanullah Gurbaz and he seems to have pulled his hamstring here. Gurbaz seems in some discomfort and the physio is out to have a look. Hopefully, he is fine and can continue here. The positive news is that Gurbaz is back on his feet and the physio is heading back and the Afghan opener will continue. Also, it will be Taskin Ahmed to take the other new ball.

FOUR! Too and wide and Gurbaz ends the first over with a boundary. Shoriful drops it short and angles it well wide of the off stump, Gurbaz just reaches out and taps the ball into the gap between point and covers and the ball rolls away into the fence.

Sediqullah Atal is straightaway off the mark in international cricket! Just back of a length over middle, Atal stays compact and jabs the ball down in front of mid-wicket for a quick single.

Gurbaz and Afghanistan are underway! Shoriful goes full and straight, gets the ball to swing back in as well, Gurbaz looks to drive straight but gets it off the inner half of the bat wide of mid on for a quick single.

Right on the money! Starts from over the wicket and pitches the ball up around off stump, looking for that inswing, Rahmanullah Gurbaz covers the line well and blocks it off.

Done and dusted with the pre-match proceedings and it is now time to get the 300th international game at Sharjah underway! The umpires are out in the middle and the players of Bangladesh are spreading out on the field. It will be the debutant Sediqullah Atal to open the innings along with Rahmanullah Gurbaz for Afghanistan. Shoriful Islam has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

We are just a few minutes away from the start of the match but first, the two sets of players will lineup for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of Bangladesh first followed by that of Afghanistan.

PITCH REPORT - Brian Murgatroyd is pitchside and he says that there is a breeze blowing from West to East and the straight boundaries are long with about 75 meters. Ramiz Raja says that nothing much has changed in Sharjah with regards to the surface in the last 40 years and it is a placid track.

Najmul Hossain Shanto, the skipper of Bangladesh says that the boys are feeling good and ready to go and mentions that it is more about focusing on what they can do best rather than focusing on the opposition. Adds that they have a good batting lineup and Rishad Hossain is someone who has come into the ODI setup after impressing in the T20 World Cup.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the captain of Afghanistan says that they will bat first. The reason for that is the pitch looks good and the ball moves a bit under lights. Adds that Sediqullah Atal is all set to make his debut and have plenty of options in the bowling attack.

Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Najmul Hossain Shanto (C), Tanzid Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim (WK), Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam.

Afghanistan (Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Sediqullah Atal (On debut), Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, AM Ghazanfar, Nangeyalia Kharote, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

TOSS - Afghanistan have won the toss and they will BAT first.

NEWS FLASH - There was news about a couple of Bangladeshi players awaiting their visas and it is now confirmed that fast bowler, Nahid Rana will not take part in the first ODI due to the same issue. Nasum Ahmed was another name that seemed to be awaiting his visa but he has arrived and will be one of Bangladesh's key spinners. Toss is now just a few minutes away.

Bangladesh on the other hand have a fairly experienced side and one that is well-suited to the ODI format. After their iconic red-ball triumph in Pakistan, Bangladesh were handed a couple of Test defeats by India after being completely demolished in the T20 format by the same opposition. This is their chance to regain a bit of lost momentum and the pitches in Sharjah should suit their style of play as well. So, who do you think will come out trumps in the series opener? We shall find out in due time. Toss and teams news in a bit, so, don't go anywhere.

Afghanistan recently welcomed South Africa on a white-ball tour in the UAE and got a couple of massive wins in the ODI format here in Sharjah as well. Hashmatullah Shahidi will lead the side that features a couple of hopeful debutants in the form of wrist-spinner Sediqullah Atal and pacer Bilal Sami with Mujeeb still out due to injury. They are missing a big name in Ibrahim Zadran up top but do have a well-rounded team to take on a somewhat sluggish Bangladesh side.

Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Afghanistan and Bangladesh in Sharjah. Bangladesh are the visiting team as they take on Afghanistan in a three-match ODI series in good preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy early in 2025. Both teams will be looking to put their best foot forward and this could be a big opportunity for a few of the fringe players to take centerstage as well.

... MATCH DAY ...

With a whirlwind of international matches fueling the passion of cricket fans worldwide, two Asian powerhouses are set to clash in an eagerly anticipated 3-match ODI series. Afghanistan will take on Bangladesh in a showdown at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium, with all three games set in this historic venue. Not long ago, Afghanistan etched its name in cricket history at this very ground, claiming their first-ever ODI series win against a top-five ranked team by defeating South Africa 2-1. Once seen as an emerging team, Afghanistan has stormed up the rankings, now standing as a formidable force on the international stage. This time, they return to Sharjah with a couple of additions to the squad with opening batter Sediqullah Atal coming in alongside the skilled wrist-spinner Noor Ahmad. Afghanistan’s batting unit has been on a thrilling upswing, adding firepower to their already dominant bowling lineup. Rahmanullah Gurbaz will lead from the front, bringing stability and aggression to the top order, while Rashid Khan and Fazalhaq Farooqi head a bowling attack that promises to challenge any opposition. With Noor Ahmad returning after a phenomenal CPL season, Afghanistan’s squad looks sharper and more prepared than ever to make their mark. Bangladesh, though facing recent setbacks, comes with renewed hope and hunger, especially after an ODI series win against Sri Lanka earlier this year. This series presents an opportunity to sharpen their lineup with an eye on the Champions Trophy. Najmul Hossain Shanto remains at the helm and will be ready to inspire his team to a crucial series victory. The absence of star players Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das will indeed be felt, but Bangladesh’s depth and talent offer plenty of promise. Returning opener Zakir Hasan and left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed are expected to add fresh vigour, while seasoned campaigners look to reignite Bangladesh's intense rivalry with Afghanistan. Expect a battle where neither side will give an inch! This series is set to be a thrilling showdown filled with high-stakes cricketing drama under the Sharjah sky! Who are you backing to blow the first punch?
