Commentary

Right then, we witnessed an exciting chase here in Pune where Afghanistan has come out to be the more dominant team. Their campaign gets better and better with every match and we might just see them qualify for the semi-finals of this tournament. We have another exciting match on Tuesday, the 31st of October at the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata where Pakistan will go up against Bangladesh. The game will begin at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT) but our build-up will begin much sooner. Do join us then. Until then, take care and goodbye!

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the skipper of Afghanistan starts by saying that he is very happy and proud of the team as they performed well in all three departments. Adds that the win over Pakistan gave them a lot of confidence to chase down any target and the way they started with the ball was excellent and it was a professional performance. Mentions that all the coaching staff and managing staff push them hard and rally them on and especially Jonathan Trott gave them a lot of confidence in the last game. On his knock, adds that he is the captain and he has to play his role well and is happy to have done that. On Rashid Khan playing his 100th ODI, he says that Rashid Khan is a special player and he brings joy to the team as well. Ends by thanking the people of Afghanistan for their support and applauds the Indian crowd as well for backing them throughout.

Sri Lanka's skipper Kusal Mendis says they were short of runs in the first innings and that 280 to 300 would have been a competitive score to put on the board. He adds that in the second innings, the bowlers bowled really well, especially in the first 10 overs, but after that, the dew started forming and it became tougher to bowl. He also adds that later in the match the pitch started to favour the Afghanistan batters as the ball came on to the bat much better. Ends by saying that Dilshan Madushanka has bowled well in recent times and he is young and learning day by day.

Fazalhaq Farooqi is the Player of the Match for his sensational spell of bowling. He starts by thanking the almighty and says that it is pretty good to get three wins in the tournament and it feels good to contribute to the win. Adds that he was looking for the swing but he didn't get that and hence got away from attacking the stumps and just looked to bowl in good areas. Mentions that they have struggled in the past in the death overs and he tried to use the variations and worked on the death overs in the off days.

The Presentation ceremony…

Earlier in the game we saw Pathum Nissanka give a strong start to the Lankan innings followed by some solid knocks from Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama but no batter could play a big innings and Sri Lanka leap-frogged to the 240-run mark. It was Fazalhaq Farooqi who impressed everyone with his bowling performance as he clinched four wickets for 34 runs. Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan weaved their spin magic and troubled the batters taking a wicket each along with one wicket from Azmatullah Omarzai. Afghanistan was the dominant team from the first innings itself with their strong bowling performance.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, will have a win to rejoice as an amazing performance by the batters has kept them alive in this tournament. It is a story of success for the Afghans from the last ODI World Cup where they were placed last on the table to this one where they have a chance to finish in the top 4. After an early setback with Rahmanullah Gurbaz getting dismissed pretty early it seemed a very difficult chase for the batters. Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah took things into their own hands and built a steady partnership and stabilized the innings. Afterwards, the skipper played a captain's knock as he kept the runs coming and didn't allow his team to face the pressure. In the end, Hashmatullah Shahidi along with a pumped-up Azmatullah Omarzai finished the innings in just over 45 overs and helped the team secure another victory. Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, and Azmatullah Omarzai all contributed with the bat, scoring half-centuries but not to take credit from Ibrahim Zadran who played a steady innings under pressure. It was an all-round performance from the Afghans and they will take home a lot of confidence for their next match to come.

Sri Lanka had to defend a meager score of 241 to clinch another win. Dilshan Madushanka gave them a very important breakthrough in the first over itself and put them on the strong foot but after that, the game started slipping out of their hands. They failed to bowl to their strength and allowed the Afghan batters to get used to the pitch and build strong partnerships. It was Dilshan Madushanka again providing them with another wicket and breaking the partnership as he dismissed Ibrahim Zadran. Kasun Rajitha got his first wicket in this match by dismissing Rahmat Shah but not after the latter had done the damage. After that none of the bowlers managed to take wickets and a lack of invention hurt them. Afghanistan managed to chase down the target in just over 45 overs and has put Sri Lanka in a tough spot and almost spoiled their chance to qualify in the top 4.

It was an amazing run-chase here in Pune. Afghanistan have powered their way to their third win and have registered back-to-back wins in any World Cup for the first time by beating the Lankans. Some very strong partnerships and sensible game style have helped the Afghans have a chance to finish in the top 4 and qualify for the semi-finals. The Lankan bowlers tried hard but were short of taking a few wickets. One dropped chance and some poor bowling didn’t go in their favor either. It was a day for the pacers as they proved strong on this surface. Overall, it was a good display of cricket from both the sides but Afghanistan were simply the better team.

DROPPED AND THAT IS IT! Afghanistan get their third win of the campaign and keep hopes alive of a semi-final berth. This is pitched up on middle and leg, attacking the toes, Azmatullah Omarzai clears the front leg and looks to end proceedings with a bang as he heaves it away toward mid-wicket. The connection isn't great and the ball goes straight to Charith Asalanka at the fence and he spills it. The batters cross for a single and Afghanistan win by 7 wickets!

Scores are level! Full and outside off, driven square on the off side through the point region for a single by Hashmatullah Shahidi.

Full on middle, angled in from around the stumps, Hashmatullah Shahidi clips it straight to mid-wicket.

43.41

Keeps it short and bowls it at the hips, Azmatullah Omarzai tucks it away down to fine leg for a single. Just 10 runs needed now for Afghanistan.

43.34

FOUR! Clubbed away for four more! Banged in short over middle and leg, Azmatullah Omarzai rides the bounce well and forces the pull shot aerially well in front of square on the leg side and finds the vacant mid-wicket fence.

43.20

Omarzai looked to dispatch that onto the moon! Fuller in length and angling in from around middle, Omarzai has a wild slog across the line but only gets an inside edge into the pads.

43.14

EDGED AND FOUR! Hits the deck hard and keeps the line tight on off stump, generating some extra bounce off the deck as well. Azmatullah Omarzai stays leg side and looks to open the face of the bat but edges it past the keeper and into the third man fence for another boundary.

42.54

FOUR! Pulled away! Kasun Rajitha bowls it short and over off. Azmatullah Omarzai pulls this one with better timing and along the ground. The ball runs away to the deep mid-wicket fence for four runs. Afghanistan are looking to finish it early.

42.42

Dropped! Kasun Rajitha drops it short and over middle. Azmatullah Omarzai pulls it but with no timing. The ball sails towards deep square leg as Pathum Nissanka runs in from the deep. It was a very difficult chance as he dives to reach it but fails to hold onto it. A very good effort from the fielder but maybe he timed his dive a bit too earlier than he needed to.

42.30

On a good length and just outside off. Azmatullah Omarzai tries to play it down the ground but the lack of bounce on the ball beats him.

42.21

Back of length on middle and leg, Hashmatullah Shahidi shuffles towards off and clips the ball to square leg for a run.

42.11

FIFTY UP FOR Azmatullah Omarzai! Kasun Rajitha bowls it on the hard length and outside off. Azmatullah Omarzai punches it to the cover region and takes a single to complete his second fifty in this tournament. He has helped his team manage to stabilize their innings.

FOUR! Classy! Dilshan Madushanka overpitches this one outside off. Hashmatullah Shahidi takes advantage of the room as he times his drive well and places it in the gap through covers. The ball races away to the fence for four runs to end the over.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The umpires are out in the middle as the Sri Lankan players are seen in a huddle on the boundary ropes before striding out to the middle as well. It will be the prolific pairing of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran to open the innings for Afghanistan. It will be the left-arm seam of Dilshan Madushanka to get proceedings going with the ball here.

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, 242 is the number required for Afghanistan to rack up their third win of the campaign and add to their impressive run in this tournament. Sri Lanka have their task cut out but have the pace attack to challenge the opposition. It looks like a straightforward target but sometimes, scores of around 240-250 provide us with an enticing game. Do join us in a bit for the run chase.

Rashid Khan is down for a chat. He says it is a great achievement for him to play for his country and reach 100 ODI matches. Adds that the wicket is good to bat on but they bowled well. Tells that they assessed the conditions quickly and they wanted to restrict them under 250. Mentions that after the last game, the confidence is high and they just want to play positive cricket. Says that they had a couple of practice sessions and saw that India vs Bangladesh game here and knows that there could be dew under lights. Ends by hoping that they can win this one and make his 100th game a bit more special.

Afghanistan would have taken this score at the toss and the bowlers have backed their skipper's decision to bowl first. On a pitch that looked nice and hard, Fazalhaq Farooqi picked up an early wicket and along with Mujeeb Ur Rahman kept a check on the flow of runs as well. Azmatullah Omarzai then came in and got a big wicket, breaking the 2nd wicket partnership and after that Afghanistan were able to boss the middle overs. The likes of Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi gave nothing away but it was Mujeeb who once again came in and got a couple of big wickets in quick succession. The fielding too was brilliant as the fielders consistently scored direct hits and that brought about a couple of run-outs as well. Naveen-ul-Haq had an off day as he took some pounding in the final ten overs but Farooqi justified his selection to the fullest as he ripped through that lower order and finished with 4 for 34, the second-best bowling figures by an Afghan bowler in a World Cup game.

End of an up-and-down first innings but at the halfway stage, Afghanistan will be more than happy with that effort, restricting Sri Lanka to just 241 runs. Sri Lanka were put into bat by Hashmatullah Shahidi and the change up top didn't work as Dimuth Karunaratne got out early. Two of their three most prolific batters in recent times, Pathum Nissanka and skipper Kusal Mendis put on a steady stand but were found guilty of being content with just the singles on offer. As they looked to shift gears, they just weren't ready and soon Nissanka fell. The skipper then added another stand with Sadeera Samarawickrama but once again they just didn't show enough intent and the settled pair fell in the space of a couple of overs. After that it was left upon Angelo Mathews and the tailenders to muster up some crucial runs and Maheesh Theekshana did just that as he scored a vital 29 and Matthews too scored 23 runs but they have fallen well short of what would have been a par score on this wicket.

OUT! RUN OUT! Another fine piece of effort in the field from Afghanistan! Naveen-ul-Haq bowls this on a good length but down the leg side, slower too, Dilshan Madushanka looks to heave it away but misses, Kasun Rajitha sets off for the bye run but Rahmanullah Gurbaz quickly gathers the ball and hits the stumps with the gloves on at the batter's end with Rajitha putting in a dive in. However, the square leg umpire signals out as the batter is well short. Sri Lanka have been bowled out for 241!

49.30

Run out chance...missed! This is full again, on middle, Dilshan Madushanka drilss it down the pitch where Naveen-ul-Haq stops it with his leg, Madushanka sets off the run but turns back as Naveen-ul-Haq misses his shy at the batter's end. He is not happy with himself as all the stumps were visible.

49.21

Fuller one and on middle, angling in, Kasun Rajitha tucks it towards deep mid-wicket for a single.

49.10

Naveen-ul-Haq nails the yorker as well, on off, angling in, Kasun Rajitha fails to dig it out.

48.40

Pulls his length back a bit and around off, Dilshan Madushanka pushes it towards short covers.

Dilshan Madushanka is the last man in for Sri Lanka.

OUT! TAKEN! A brilliant catch in the deep! Fazalhaq Farooqi serves this full and around middle, takes all the pace off the ball, Angelo Mathews stays deep in his crease and looks to slog it away but goes through his shot early and his bottom hand comes off as well. As a result, the ball goes high in the air towards long on where Mohammad Nabi judges it well and takes a fine catch just inches inside the ropes and keeps his balance nicely as well. Sri Lanka nine down now!

48.21

Fuller one and on middle, Kasun Rajitha flicks it towards deep square leg for a single.

He absolutely nails the yorker this time, on middle, angling in, Maheesh Theekshana makes room and tries to squeeze it away but is too late to put his bat down and the ball goes through to shatter the stumps. A good little cameo from Maheesh Theekshana comes to an end and Lanka lose their eighth wicket.

46.51

Change of pace, back of a length and around off, Angelo Mathews drops it towards point for one.

46.41

Touch fuller and around off, Maheesh Theekshana stabs it towards point where a fumble allows the single. Afghanistan need to tidy up here.

46.36

SIX! Into the stands! Fazalhaq Farooqi bangs this short and around middle, slower too, Maheesh Theekshana is already standing on his back foot and waits for it to hammer it over the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie.

46.20

Fazalhaq Farooqi takes pace off, on a length and on middle, Maheesh Theekshana knocks it down the pitch where Fazalhaq Farooqi sticks out his right leg and parries it towards mid on.

It is time for drinks as the players get a breather. Sri Lanka had started well after taking an important wicket in the first over but the partnership between Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah stabilized the game in the favour of Afghanistan. Now Sri Lanka have a chance to bounce back as they have dismissed Ibrahim Zadran. Afghanistan on the other hand needs a few more strong partnerships to chase down the target.

This is full again, on middle, Dilshan Madushanka drilss it down the pitch where Naveen-ul-Haq stops it with his leg, Madushanka sets off the run but turns back as Naveen-ul-Haq misses his shy at the batter's end. Done with the pre-match formalities! Afghanistan players are in a huddle and now they spread out to take their respective field positions. Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne are the two openers for Sri Lanka. We will see spin straightaway as Mujeeb Ur Rahman has the new ball in hand. Let's play...

We are moments away from the start of the match but before that the players from both teams walk out and line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Sri Lanka's first followed by the national anthem of Afghanistan.

The Sri Lankan skipper, Kusal Mendis says he would have batted first anyway, the pitch looks good, and they would like to put a huge target on board and put a bit of pressure on the opposition. Adds that Sri Lanka's last two matches were really good and wishes for this one to be similar as well. He confirms that Dushmantha Chameera will play and informs that Dimuth Karunaratne replaces Kusal Perera at the top of the order.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the captain of Afghanistan says that they will bowl first. Adds that there will be dew later on and that is why they want to chase. Tells that they have played good cricket and will look to continue that. Says that they are focusing on just this match at this moment and don't want to think much ahead. Ends by saying that looking at the conditions Noor Ahmad has been rested and Fazalhaq Farooqi is back in the side.

TOSS - Up goes the flip of the coin and it lands in favor of Afghanistan and they will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Simon Doull is pitchside. He says that it is 67m on the leg side for right handers and 61m on the other side. Aaron Finch joins him and says that there won't be much spin and we can expect a lot of runs on it. Tells that there might be some dew later but initially it will be a bit slow and good for batting.

Rashid Khan is all set to play his 100th ODI and what a crucial one this could turn out to be! Can the spin maestro lead his nation to a memorable win? We will have to wait and watch.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, are coming into this clash after an inspirational victory over Pakistan. Their openers have been in terrific form with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran both scoring good runs while Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah provide good stability in the middle order. They will be relying on the spin trio of Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman who are surely enjoying these conditions. They suffered heartbreak against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 and will want to avenge that loss. It is tough to predict a winner as both teams look evenly matched and the side that handles pressure better will come out on top here. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

Sri Lanka put on a stellar show against defending champions England to brush them aside. Their bowling was amazing with Lahiru Kumara being the architect but he is unfortunately ruled out of the tournament and Dushmantha Chameera has replaced him who has a lot of experience. The inclusion of Angelo Mathews helped them a lot as well while Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis are in good form with the bat as well. However, the most impressive has been Sadeera Samarawickrama who holds their middle order and the spin mystery of Maheesh Theekshana will also be crucial in this game. Dilshan Madushanka has also done well with the new ball and they will be hoping that he continues to make the ball talk and they repeat the heroics of the Asia Cup 2023.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of match number 30 of the 2023 World Cup between two Asian rivals Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. These two sides have put on some spirited performances in this World Cup and both have two wins so far and will be eager to get another one here to keep their campaigns alive at least till their next games.

... MATCH DAY ...

Match number 30 of the 2023 World Cup is upon us and it will be Afghanistan taking on Sri Lanka at the MCA Stadium in Pune in what will be a very crucial encounter. Both teams have played five matches thus far, winning 2 and losing 3 but both sides come into this contest on the back of stellar wins. Afghanistan have been knocking on the door for quite a while now and have shown their prowess in the T20 format but after a winless 2019 World Cup campaign, they have now racked up a couple of big wins, none so bigger than their demolition of neighbors and cricket powerhouse Pakistan in the last game. Chasing a score of 280 plus, they lost just a couple of wickets with the top 4 all contributing to the win. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran are a lethal pair and once these two get going, Afghanistan seem to have a pretty easy game but the form of skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi has been a big positive as well. The bowling is well-rounded with the likes of Naveen-ul-Haq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan providing variety and wicket-taking ability as well but the addition of Noor Ahmad against Pakistan was a masterstroke as he picked up three wickets and all that experience playing in the Pakistan Super League seemed to have paid dividends. Sri Lanka on the other hand had a really tough start to the tournament and were involved in a couple of high-scoring losses and given their injury list, they seemed to have no chance going forward. But a couple of wins, including a rout of England in their previous game has certainly galvanized them. The top order has fired pretty consistently with Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis Kusal Perera all playing useful knocks and then the stability provided by Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka gives them that added advantage over their opponents. The bowling has been a concern in general but Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara have stepped up at the right time with Maheesh Theekshana doing a fine overall job. Two sides that know each other really well and for both, a win will see them really challenge for that semi-final berth but a loss could all but end their campaign. Which underdog team will make the maximum impact and get that crucial win? We shall find out.
