Commentary

Right then, that is it from this game where England registers a huge win while Netherlands slips further down. The action now moves to Bengaluru where New Zealand takes on Sri Lanka with qualification to the knockouts on the line. That game will begin be played on 9th November, Thursday at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT), but as you know, you can join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Jos Buttler, the victorious skipper of England says that it was a great performance and they were desperate for the win. Mentions that it was a great start from Dawid Malan and the partnership between Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes was fantastic. On Stokes, he says that he is always there to stand up when they need someone to do that. Mentions that 339 was a really good score. Shares that the toss is an interesting aspect of the World Cup but feels that they have not done well even after winning the toss. On Woakes, he says that he is a skillful cricketer and sets the tone with the ball along with David Willey. On the game against Pakistan, he says that it is a huge game in what has been a disappointing tournament. Adds that they will prepare well and are looking forward to it.

Scott Edwards, the captain of Netherlands says that it is obviously a disappointing performance. Adds that they didn't start well with the ball but were able to pull things back in the middle overs but then let them get away with it at the death. Tells that is the same old story with the bat as the wicket was a good one and credits England for their batting. Mentions that it is about balance when chasing as you need to score quick runs in the Powerplay while also needing wickets in the middle. Says that they have been good in patches but they will need to do it for longer periods. Ends by saying that it will be an amazing atmosphere against India in Bengaluru and they are looking forward to it.

Ben Stokes is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant hundred. He says that he is more pleased to get the win than his knock. Adds that it has been a tough World Cup for them and it is nice to get back up. Shares that it was a typical Pune surface but felt that the balls bowled on a back of a length had tennis ball bounce. States he looked up to the scoreboard whenever he felt pressure and it certainly helped. On Chris Woakes, he says that he is a pretty experienced cricketer and a genuine all-rounder. Further adds that he showed tonight how great a cricketer he has been for the past two years. On whether he thought about going home for his knee surgery, he says that he does not want to leave his team hanging.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, after electing to bat first, England posted a big total on the board courtesy of a nice half-century from Dawid Malan at the start but the main credit goes to an exceptional hundred from Ben Stokes who took his team out of trouble after struggling in the middle overs. He was also well supported by Chris Woakes who registered a fine fifty as well. Bas de Leede was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while Aryan Dutt and Logan van Beek picked up a couple each. Paul van Meekeren chipped in with one too. While chasing, Netherlands did show some fight with a couple of good partnerships but they needed a lot more than that and the target proved to be too much for them in the end.

England, on the other hand, were all over the Dutch with Chris Woakes and David Willey both making the ball talk and moving it both ways and the batters had no answers to it. Both of them picked up a wicket and set the tone for them. They allowed a stand to build but a miscommunication between the batters gave them the opportunity to break it and they took with both hands. Adil Rashid then got another breakthrough in the middle overs to put their opponents further on the back foot. They also dropped a few chances but that didn't cost them much. Once Moeen Ali got rid off the Netherlands skipper which was also his first wicket in this World Cup, they were able to gain full control of the game. Ali and Rashid shared six wickets equally and absolutely ran through the lower order of the Dutch to confirm the win.

Netherlands got off to a very sluggish start as they found it hard to score runs against some quality pace bowling from England and lost a couple of wickets early on. Wesley Barresi struggled initially but he along with Sybrand Engelbrecht steadied the ship for a bit with a 55-run stand before the former lost his wicket due to a mix-up in the middle which was also their 10th run out in this World Cup which is an unwanted record for them. Their skipper, Scott Edwards came in after that but even before he could settle in, Sybrand was dismissed trying to up the ante. Then Teja Nidamanuru joined his captain and both of them slowly started to change gears and found the boundaries while also rotating the strike well with good running between the wickets. However, as the required rate was creeping up, Edwards failed to execute his big shot and lost his wicket and after that, the lower order fell like nine pins. Teja Nidamanuru remained unbeaten on 41 but they faced a massive defeat which now threatens their qualification chances for the Champions Trophy.

England finally win another game in this World Cup! This is only their second victory of the tournament and they completely outplayed Netherlands here to get a comprehensive win by 160 runs. These are also two important points to keep them in contention for direct qualification to the Champions Trophy 2025.

OUT! STUMPED! All over for Netherlands! A thumping win for England! Moeen Ali sees the batter advance and bowls it flatter and quicker, outside off, Paul van Meekeren advances but fails to get behind the line as he looked to go back over the bowler's head. The ball keeps straight and beats him all ends up. Jos Buttler takes his time and disturbs the woodwork on the second attempt. Moeen Ali finishes with three wickets and England win by 160 runs!

OUT! CASTLED! Another fine googly from Adil Rashid does the trick! He floats this up, full and around off, turns in sharply, Aryan Dutt prods forward to defend but plays down the wrong line and the ball goes through the gap between bat and pad to rattle the stumps. England one wicket away from the win now!

OUT! CAUGHT! Another one bites the dust! Another Dutch batter departs while trying the sweep! Moeen Ali gives the ball air and bowls it around off, Roelof van der Merwe moves leg side initially and gives himself room to play the reverse sweep. The ball spins in and he is too late to swing his bat. He gets this one off the splice of the bat and lobs towards short third man where Adil Rashid reverse cups it with ease. Moeen Ali has his second wicket.

OUT! CAUGHT! Adil Rashid gets his second wicket now and Netherlands are now 7 down! Adil Rashid loops it up this time, googly and outside off, Logan van Beek goes for the sweep from way out in front. He fails to ride on top of the bounce by rolling his wrist as the ball gets a bit big on him and he gets a top edge that balloons towards short fine leg where Dawid Malan settles under it and completes the simplest of catches.

34.41

Drops it short this time, on off, Teja Nidamanuru rocks back and pulls it in the air but wide of deep square leg for a single.

Commentary

We are back for the second essay. Some last words being spoken by Jos Buttler in the England huddle before they spread out to take their respective field positions. It will be Wesley Barresi and Max O'Dowd to open the innings for Netherlands. Chris Woakes has the new ball in hand and he is raring to go. Two slips in place. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, England will be the happier of the two sides at the halfway mark. They have the momentum with them and will be hoping to translate it into their bowling effort. On the other hand, the Netherlands have a mountain to climb and it will take a collective effort to gun down this total. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

Dawid Malan is in for a chat. He says that he got lucky with a few half-volleys early on which he put away and that got him going. Praises Ben Stokes for his exceptional innings and says they are happy with the total. Tells that Stokes soaks up pressure incredibly well and to do this consistently for a long period is special. Says that they would have taken 340 before the start of the game and it should be enough runs to bowl their opponents and get a good win.

Despite the favourable overcast conditions on offer, the Netherlands were not able to start well with the ball. Aryan Dutt was guilty of bowling it too short while Logan van Beek offered half-volleys which allowed Dawid Malan in particular to get his eye in. Dutt soon adjusted his lines and lengths and got rid of Jonny Bairstow. In the middle phase, van Beek was rewarded for his persistence as he went through the defence of Joe Root. This breakthrough opened the floodgates for the Netherlands as they kept striking at regular intervals. Things would have been very different had Aryan Dutt managed to hang on to the catch of Ben Stokes when he was on 42. Despite having England on the ropes at one stage, the Dutch bowlers let it slip during the final ten overs and just were not able to nail good deliveries at the death. Bas de Leede was the pick of the bowlers for the Netherlands with 3 wickets to his name. Aryan Dutt and Logan van Beek accounted for two wickets each while Paul van Meekeren struck once.

After Jos Buttler opted to bat first and put runs on the board, England were off to a blazing start. Dawid Malan produced an exhibition of driving and got himself going with a flurry of boundaries. He registered his fastest ODI fifty off just 36 balls while Joe Root employed a watchful approach and was happy to play the second fiddle. Root's favourite scoop shot led to his downfall before a mixup resulted in Malan being run out. Due to the departure of both set batters, England began to lose their way to be reduced to 192-6 from 133-1. Ben Stokes was unperturbed by the fall of wickets at the other end and he got together with Chris Woakes to forge a solid recovery. Stokes soaked up the pressure before accelerating just at the right time on his way to his maiden World Cup hundred. It rubbed off on Woakes who also played his part and notched up a fifty. Thanks to the 129-run stand, England find themselves in a commanding position.

A couple of runs to end the innings then! Logan van Beek lands this on a hard length and around off, Gus Atkinson swats it wide of long off and turns back for the second run, the fielder throws it at the keeper's end on the bounce where Scott Edwards collects and breaks the stumps. However, the replay shows that Atkinson has dragged his bat in time. England finish on 339/9!

Take a bow, Ben Stokes! Time and time and time again, he has stepped up and delivered for England. If it was Glenn Maxwell last night in Mumbai for Australia, it has been Ben Stokes here in Pune who has batted on one leg to bail England out of trouble. As for the Netherlands, bowling in the last ten overs continues to be their Achilles heel. In their earlier game against Australia, they conceded 131 runs in that phase with Glenn Maxwell going berserk and here against England, they have given away 124 runs.

49.61wd

Full again and way outside off too, Gus Atkinson once again offers no shot at it. It is called a wide again.

49.61wd

Goes fuller but way outside off, Gus Atkinson leaves it alone. Wided.

49.51

Back of a length and around off, Adil Rashid slaps it towards long off for one.

Adil Rashid is the last man in.

49.4W

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! A fantastic innings from Stokes finally comes to an end! Logan van Beek pitches this one up and around off, slower again, Ben Stokes has to reach for it as he tries to slog it away but his bottom hand comes off and he goes through his shot early as well. As a result, he slices it up in the air towards long off where Sybrand Engelbrecht once again settles under it and takes a comfortable catch. Stokes walk back to a standing ovation from the crowd and his team as well.

49.30

A slower bouncer now, on middle, Ben Stokes ducks under it. He looks at the square leg umpire but no signal for a wide.

49.26

SIX! A gift for Stokes! Logan van Beek misses his yorker and serves a juicy full toss, on middle, Ben Stokes stands there and clubs it over the long on fence for a biggie.

49.10

Logan van Beek nails the yorker this time, outside off, Ben Stokes throws his bat at it but only manages to dig it out towards long off and denies the run.

49.11wd

Logan van Beek tries the wide yorker but bowls this way outsde off, Ben Stokes leaves it alone. Wided.

Gus Atkinson is the new man in. It will be Logan van Beek to bowl the final over. Also, Netherlands have been penalised for a slow over rate and therefore, they are now allowed only 4 fielders outside the 30-yard circle for the final over.

OUT! TAKEN! Bas de Leede gets another wicket! David Willey tries to go for another big one but loses his wicket in the process. This is fuller in length and on middle, David Willey looks to loft it over long on but fails to get under it and does not get the elevation as the ball goes high in the air towards long on where Sybrand Engelbrecht pouches it safely. England eight down now!

48.56

SIX! A poor delivery and rightly punished! This is short again and down the leg side, slower too, David Willey has all the time in the world and he swivels and hooks it way over the fine leg fence and into the second tier for a biggie.

David Willey comes out to bat.

48.4W

OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Bas de Leede gets his man! Chris Woakes goes back after an excellent fifty. This is very full and around off, shaping away a bit, Chris Woakes looks to slog it across the line but only manages to get a thin outside edge behind where Scott Edwards makes no mistake. England seven down now!

48.34

FOUR! FIFTY FOR WOAKES! This has been a fine knock from him and he has supported Stokes brilliantly here. Bas de Leede bangs this short again and on off, Chris Woakes upper cuts it over short third man for a boundary now.

48.26

SIX! BOOM! Chris Woakes joins the act now! Bas de Leede pitches this one up and around middle, in the slot again, Chris Woakes clears his front leg away and smashes it over the deep mid-wicket fence for a maximum.

48.11

Joe Root and England are not pleased one bit with the decision but will have to get on with it.

Is that out? Joe Root is claiming the catch but the umpires sends it upstairs to check if that is clean or not. After a lot of replays, there is no conclusive evidence that the fingers are underneath or not, and the third umpire gives the benefit of the doubt to the batter.

SIX! Ben Stokes takes full toll of the Free Hit! Aryan Dutt angles it in again, in the slot, on middle and leg, Ben Stokes needs no second invitation as he swings across the line and smokes it over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. Most expensive over of the innings, 24 came off it.

44.67nb

NO BALL AND SIX! Oh, dear! It is going from bad to worse for Aryan Dutt! Loses his grip and ends up bowling a beamer, at the batter, Ben Stokes does extremely well to hook it away despite being cramped for room. He clears the fine leg fence and collects a maximum. Free Hit coming up.

44.50

A loud shout for LBW but turned down! Fired in by Aryan Dutt, on middle from around the wicket, Ben Stokes goes for the reverse sweep but the ball skids on and thuds onto the front pad. Netherlands go up in unison but the umpire shakes his head. The UltraEdge shows that a minor spike as the ball is next to the gloves which is enough for the umpire to stay with the on-field decision. Netherlands lose their review.

Is that out? It looks close and Netherlands have taken the review for a LBW decision on Ben Stokes. UltraEdge shows some murmurs and the third umpire interprets it as a bottom edge and potentially some gloves as well.

On off, a bit fuller, Ben Stokes drives this one straight to cover.

44.36

Drinks break! This has been a solid start for England. Dawid Malan is looking in excellent nick and he will look to take the innings forward with Joe Root. Despite the favourable overcast conditions, the Dutch bowlers have not been able to work their magic. On what is looking like a good surface to bat on, wickets will be the key for them in the middle phase if they are to stem the flow of runs. Also, it has gotten gloomy but let's hope that the rain stays away.

Done with the pre-match formalities! The Netherlands players are making their way out in the middle and taking their respective field positions. Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan are the two openers for England. As usual, Scott Edwards is going with spin straightaway handing the new ball to Aryan Dutt. Let's play...

We are moments away from the game but before that, players from both sides line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Netherlands' first followed by the national anthem of England.

Harry Brook has a few words to share with us. He says that they haven't been at their best but there is still a lot at stake with the Champions Trophy qualification on the line. Adds that they have to make sure to win the remaining two games and the key is to be consistent. Tells that they have the belief and talent in the team to win both matches. Mentions it is frustrating not to be part of the team regularly but it is also important to be prepared and step up whenever the opportunity arises. Says that they have to focus on themselves and work harder and he also says that he wants to play the way he wants irrespective of the team. Ends by saying that Maxi's innings last night was a treat to watch.

The captain of the Netherlands, Scott Edwards says that they would have batted first as well but says that he is not too worried either way. Mentions that they will have to play good cricket in the remaining two games to give themselves a chance for the Champions Trophy qualification. Shares that he is proud of the way guys have gone about this tournament. Adds that they have not taken some chances but they have plenty of learnings. States that they have shown signs as a batting group but have not clicked as they would have liked. Ends by informing that Teja Nidamanuru comes in for Saqib Zulfiqar.

England's captain, Jos Buttler says that they will bat first. Adds that the wicket looks good and they want to use the conditions and put up a good score. Tells that they have two crucial games and the Champions Trophy is a tournament they want to be involved in but they need to play good cricket to do that. Mentions that they still have belief and trust each other even more in times of challenge. Informs they have made two changes as Harry Brook and Gus Atkinson come in for Mark Wood and Liam Livingstone.

Netherlands (Playing XI) - Wesley Barresi, Max O'Dowd, Colin Ackermann, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Scott Edwards (C/WK), Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru (In for Saqib Zulfiqar), Logan van Beek, Roelof van der Merwe, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren.

England (Playing XI) - Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook (In for Liam Livingstone), Jos Buttler (C/WK), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Gus Atkinson (In for Mark Wood), Adil Rashid.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in the favour of Jos Buttler and England have opted to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Natalie Germanos is pitchside. She says that it is humid with some chances of rain later on. Adds that the square boundaries are 61m and 67m while the straighter one is much longer. Tells that the wind is blowing from the off side to the leg side. Shane Watson joins her and says it is a beautiful batting surface as it is very compact. Tells that the black soil also helps and the batters will enjoy it while the pacers will also get some help. Ends by saying that the batters from both sides will look to take advantage of the conditions.

Even though the Netherlands have blown hot and cold in the tournament, they have certainly punched above their weight. With wins over Bangladesh and South Africa, the Dutch have shown that they belong to the big stage. Thanks to Afghanistan's overnight defeat, the Netherlands are still in semi-final contention, but they will need to win their last two games and hope that New Zealand, Pakistan, and Afghanistan lose their remaining matches. Scott Edwards has led the way with the bat, and he has found good support from Sybrand Engelbrecht and Colin Ackermann. Paul van Meekeren and Logan van Beek have excelled upfront and will hold the key against a struggling English top order. Will the Men in Orange manage to pull another rabbit out of the hat? Let's find out. Toss and team news in a bit.

England have hit rock bottom at this World Cup, quite literally, with just one win from the seven games played. The defending champions are on a five-game losing streak and will be hoping to bow out on a high by winning both of their remaining matches. If they manage to do so and other results go their way, they will assure themselves a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy. It has been their highly reputed attacking brand of batting that has let them down big time, with Dawid Malan being the only bright spot. With batters failing to turn up, it has made the job even tougher for the bowlers. David Willey has been impressive with the new ball, while leggie Adil Rashid has consistently spun the web around the opposition batters.

Hello and a warm welcome, folks! We hope you have gotten your breath back after last night's ODI classic, where we witnessed a stupendous knock from Glenn Maxwell that rescued Australia from the brink of defeat and took them into the World Cup semis. The focus now shifts to the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, where England lock horns with the Netherlands in match number 40. The last four days of the World Cup have been quite something, and let's hope that we are treated to more of the same.

... MATCH DAY ...

We are in the final week of the league games in the 2023 ODI World Cup, and it is now time for match number 40, which sees England go up against the Netherlands at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. The defending champions, England, have simply not turned up and are languishing at the bottom of the standings with a solitary win from their 7 games. Moreover, their net run rate is the worst of the 10 teams, which tells you a lot about how their title defence has been. They are in danger of losing out on a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy, and they will need to win at least one of their remaining two games to stand a chance. In their last game against rivals Australia, an impressive bowling effort helped them keep Australia under 300, but no lack of support while chasing for Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes meant that they ended up on the losing side. In the batting department, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jos Buttler have lacked rhythm, but they will be eager to end the competition on a high with a big score. With the ball, if it was David Willey against India, it was Chris Woakes against Australia who showed signs of improvement. When it comes to the spin department, Adil Rashid has single-handedly shouldered the responsibility, with 7 wickets to his name. On the other hand, the Netherlands have certainly punched above their weight and have shown that they have what it takes to compete with the Test-playing nations. Like England, the Netherlands are also in contention for a place in the Champions Trophy, but with their last league game against India, they will have to play extremely well in both games to finish in the top eight teams. The Netherlands come into this game on the back of a loss against Afghanistan in the previous encounter. After opting to bat first, a disappointing effort with the bat meant that they could only manage 179, which was never going to be enough against the Afghan batting unit. For the Dutch, Scott Edwards and Sybrand Engelbrecht have done the bulk of the scoring so far. However, their top order, comprising Max O'Dowd, Colin Ackermann, and Vikramjit Singh, has underperformed, which has been a cause for major concern. In the pace department, Logan van Beek and Paul van Meekeren have made the new ball talk and have accounted for 10 wickets each. Saqib Zulfiqar could not justify his selection in the last outing, but the senior spin duo of Aryan Dutt and Roelof van der Merwe have not disappointed in the tournament. There have been six previous ODI meetings between these two sides, with England winning all six of them. Will England manage to extend their dominance? Or will the Netherlands spring a surprise yet again in this edition? We will find out soon enough.
