Right then, we have reached the end of the first semifinal and it is India who are the first team to make it through to the grand finale on Sunday up in Ahmedabad. Before we get too ahead of ourselves, there is another semifinal to go and that is between teams who have a bit of a history in World Cups, especially at this very stage of the competition. It will be Australia taking on South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, the 16th of November. That game will begin at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT) but as usual, our build-up will begin a lot sooner. Do join us then. Take care and goodbye!

The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma says that he has played a lot of cricket at this ground and any target is chasable. Adds that you cannot relax and get the job done as quickly as possible. Tells that they knew there would be some partnerships and pressure and they just had to stay collected. Mentions that they were a bit sloppy in the field but these things are bound to happen and they didn't take the chances early on but got better. Credits New Zealand for their batting as they were brilliant in the chase and the crowd was silent at one point, and they needed one magical moment which Mohammed Shami provided. Praises his batters and says that Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill were excellent while Kohli was exceptional with that landmark innings. Further adds that they tried to take the semi-final thing out of their minds and tried to do what they have done throughout the tournament.

Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand starts off by congratulating India and says that they have played outstandingly well and showed their class again. Adds that he is proud of the boys for staying in the game but it was a really tough game to get over the line. Mentions that the effort was there with the ball but India just have world-class batters who played really well and to put on almost 400 runs is a big deal. Also says that it was tough at the start of the chase with the ball swinging around but is proud of the boys. Adds that it wasn't meant to be in this game but the crowd was fantastic, albeit slightly one-sided but it's always fantastic to be here in India. Ends by saying that as a team, there was a real commitment to the way they wanted to play and gives special mention to the likes of Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell for the way they played and is also proud of the way the bowlers bounced back after a few difficult phases.

Mohammed Shami is the Player of the Match for his magnificent seven-wicket haul, the first Indian bowler to achieve that feat in a World Cup game. He says that he was waiting for his turn and when you get a good start like he did against New Zealand in the league stages, you just go with the flow. Adds that he tries to keep it simple and doesn't focus a lot on variations and his role is to pick up wickets upfront. He says that he was disappointed with the dropped catch of Kane Williamson and he took his chance by taking the pace off and it worked out for them. Mentions that the dew did not play a factor here and that helped him to bowl the slower balls as if there was dew the option of slower one goes away. Says that they came close in 2015 and 2019 but this time he wanted to take this opportunity and try to fulfill his dream and billions of others.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to put runs on the board in a pressure game and the Indian batters didn't disappoint one bit. The skipper led from the front with his aggression and made sure his side got off to a fast start before getting out. Then, Shubman Gill rose up to the occasion and along with Virat Kohli added a solid stand to solidify the start. Gill had to walk back after retiring hurt but Kohli did a wonderful job of anchoring the innings. Shreyas Iyer continued his fine form from the previous three games and along with Kohli brought up another century, his second in a row and KL Rahul added the flourish toward the end. The headlines were grabbed by King Kohli who achieved his record-shattering 50th ton but it was an overall stellar display with the bat that put the hosts in the driving seat. New Zealand were under-par with the ball and apart from Mitchell Santner no one else really showed control with the experienced likes of Trent Boult and Tim Southee getting taken apart. The latter did get three wickets but was hit away for 100 runs. Coming to the chase, there was some movement early under the lights and Mohammed Shami made good use of it. The dew didn't come into play at all and India were able to do the job with the ball quite comfortably despite a heroic effort from Daryl Mitchell.

It is the same old story for New Zealand - 'so close, yet so far' and this might be the final time that this golden generation of cricketers from 'the land of the long white cloud' have a real shot of winning their maiden World Cup. They were brilliant in the first half of the tournament but then came the dip and they were defeated by the likes of India, Australia, and South Africa - all three teams who are in the semifinals. It was certainly the toughest of asks for the batters though to chase down 398 runs in a semifinal of a World Cup against the unblemished hosts but they gave it a fair crack. After losing both their openers fairly early, the duo of Daryl Mitchell and skipper Kane Williamson stepped up for their team and put on 181 runs for the third wicket. Williamson did get one reprieve with a dropped catch on 52 but couldn't make the most of it and fell for 69. A hobbling Mitchell, with a century to his name was left to fight a lone battle for a while but Glenn Phillips rekindled the Kiwi's hopes when he took apart Siraj for 20 runs. He too fell soon after and after that Mitchell simply couldn't hang around till the end. Eventually, they were bundled out for 327 runs, falling 70 runs short of the opposition's score.

With 397 runs on the board, all India needed were early wickets but Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj couldn't conjure up much in the first five overs. It was then the decision from Rohit Sharma to bring Mohammed Shami early in the attack that worked wonders and in his first two overs, Shami got rid of both Kiwi openers. After that, the spinners came in and tried to squeeze the scoring rate but soon the Kiwis started to counter and they countered really well. Shami dropped the catch of Kane Williamson which could have been a big talking point but not much later, he came back in and sent the Kiwi skipper packing. India were always a couple of wickets away from sealing things and those wickets came in the beginning of the final 10 overs as the class of Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav shone through. Siraj too picked up a late wicket after being hit away for a lot of runs but it was that man again, Mohammed Shami who ended proceedings with an astonishing seven-wicket haul to seal the game for his side.

MAYHEM IN MUMBAI! The agony of Manchester has turned into the joy of Mumbai as India make it through to the World Cup final after 12 years. A sensational showing from the Men in Blue as they go 10 on the bounce and get their revenge on the Kiwis. Spare a thought for New Zealand and this bunch of cricketers though who have, in recent years, come so close to winning it all but yet again have fallen short.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Mohammed Shami finishes things off for India! He gets his seventh wicket of the match, incredible stuff from him. India one wicket away from the final now as Shami becomes only the second Indian bowler to pick up six wickets in a World Cup game!

Commentary

We are back for the chase! We can see the Indian team in a huddle where Rohit Sharma is giving a last-minute pep talk. Now, they spread out to take their respective field positions. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra are the two openers for New Zealand. Jasprit Bumrah to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, India have posted a mammoth total and with their bowling attack, they will be pretty confident of defending this one and advancing to the final. New Zealand have already scored a 400 in this World Cup but that was batting first. However, they could take some confidence from that game and just bat freely as they have to be proactive right from the start. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

Virat Kohli, the record-breaking centurion is down for a chat. He says that it all feels like a dream, too good to be true just to help the team so many times and adds that he tried to anchor the innings and they managed to get a big total on the board. Mentions that the most important thing for him is to take his team to the win and with the confidence he is taking to the latter overs, he can dominate the ball. Adds that it's the stuff of dreams with his wife and Sachin Tendulkar himself sitting in the stands and if he wanted to paint the perfect picture, this would be it. Reckons that anything over 330-340 in a big game is good but to get to 400 credit must go to Shreyas Iyer and all the other batters. Ends by saying that it is just one half of the game and they need to do well in the next half as well to win the game.

There is nothing much to talk about the bowling effort from New Zealand. With no swing available up front, Trent Boult and Tim Southee were taken to the cleaners in the first Powerplay which forced Kane Williamson to go to spin early on which also didn't work. Southee managed to get rid of Rohit Sharma but much credit goes to Williamson for an amazing catch. They managed to squeeze in a few cheap overs in the middle overs but failed to pick up more wickets which allowed the Indian batters to go big and put more pressure on their bowlers till the end. Mitchell Santner was really good once again conceding just 51 runs but couldn't pick up a wicket. Boult did get one but was expensive. Southee ended up with three wickets but also gave away 100 runs. The Kiwis now face a daunting task and their batters will need to be exceptional to win this game.

The pressure of a knockout game was not at all visible on the Indian openers as they went ultra-attacking in the first Powerplay, especially skipper Rohit Sharma who was just hitting boundaries for fun. They added 71 runs together. Unfortunately, Rohit had to walk back on 47 off just 29 balls. Shubman Gill then took the role of the aggressor which gave lot of time to Virat Kohli to settle in. They continued to score runs at a good rate and Gill also brought up his half-century playing in his first ODI World Cup semi-final, but he started to cramp up a bit after that and had to retire hurt on 79 was a bit unlucky for him as he looked set for a hundred. It was that Kohli-Iyer partnership once again that took the innings forward while also keeping their scoring rate around seven at all times. Both of them registered their respective fifties and then changed gears and started to smash the Kiwi bowlers. They added over 150 runs together while Kohli also broke Sachin Tendulkar's record by reaching his 50th ODI ton. He also went past his idol for scoring the most runs in a single ODI World Cup. Kohli got out on 117 but Shreyas Iyer did not let the run flow slow down and kept hitting the sixes and boundaries with ease. He too went on to score his second consecutive century in this World Cup but got out towards the end. A quick-fire cameo of 39 off just 20 balls from KL Rahul took them close to the 400-run mark.

Take a bow, KING KOHLI! He chose the perfect game and the perfect ground to break his idol's record of most ODI hundreds in front of Sachin Tendulkar as well. The hosts have put on a batting masterclass in this big semi-final and ended with 397/4 with Shreyas Iyer also scoring a brilliant ton. They have taken a massive step to break their knockout curse and will surely be the happier side going into the break.

FOUR! Ends with a boundary does KL Rahul and 15 runs come off the final over as well with Southee bringing up a century with the ball too! Banged in short and wide of the off stump, asking KL Rahul to reach for it. Rahul manages to free his hands and gets it over the man at backward point for a boundary. He ends up with 39 off just 20 balls and India finish with a mammoth total of 397/4 on the board - the highest-ever in a World Cup knockout game.

49.54

FOUR! A bit too straight from Southee and KL Rahul doesn't miss out here. Slower and shorter over middle and leg, Rahul stays back and swings it away off the inner half of the bat behind square leg and picks up a boundary.

49.40

Misses out on this occasion! Another slower one, a tad shorter and outside off, KL Rahul goes for the reverse hit as he tries to get it fine toward third man but misses the ball.

49.36

SIX! Swung away for another maximum and KL Rahul is finishing with a flourish here. Picks the slower one and the length as well before swatting it across the line and over deep mid-wicket for a maximum.

49.21

Full this time, pace on and this is whipped away toward deep mid-wicket for a single.

Shubman Gill walks out to bat again.

49.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Another one bites the dust and Tim Southee picks up his third wicket of the game. Pace off, into the pitch again and over middle and that does the job. Suryakumar Yadav looks to whack this one away over mid-wicket but is way too early in the shot. The ball goes high off the top edge and toward mid-wicket. Glenn Phillips comes racing in from the deep and takes a good running catch around his chest. SKY departs just for one.

Who will bowl the last over? It will be Tim Southee (9-0-85-2). Can he keep India under 400?

OUT! TAKEN! Shreyas Iyer finally falls but he has more than done his job here. Trent Boult takes pace off this time and bangs it in a bit wide of off stump, forcing Iyer to fetch the ball. Iyer does so and looks to club it over long on but the timing isn't there. The ball goes flat and down toward long on where Daryl Mitchell comes sliding in to take a fine catch. Boult gets his man and that's the end of a sensational knock from Iyer.

48.44

FOUR! Pinged off the bat and 15 already off this over. Looks for the yorker yet again but serves it in the slot on middle and leg, Shreyas Iyer clears the front leg and whips it wide of long on for a boundary.

48.31

Nails the yorker on middle, KL Rahul jams it out to the right of the diving bowled and down to long on for a single.

48.24

FOUR! Squeezed through the gap! Full and wide, gets it in the blockhole this time, KL Rahul stays deep in his crease and opens the bat face at the last moment to slice it wide of short third for another boundary.

48.16

SIX! Wow, that's an upper decker from KL Rahul! Trent Boult misses his mark with the yorker and serves a juicy full toss around middle. Rahul takes the front leg out of the way and slogs it away over the mid-wicket fence for a 104-meter monster maximum.

Good decision not to go in for the catch! Another slower one, bowled shorter and outside off, KL Rahul stays back and clubs it over the point region. The fielder from the deep comes charging in but steps on the brakes to collect it on the bounce. Just the single then.

47.52

Takes pace off a bit and bowls it fuller outside off, KL Rahul shuffles well across the stumps and sits down before sweeping it away behind deep square leg for a couple of runs.

47.41

Hard length over off, Shreyas Iyer looks to stand tall and swing it away but doesn't get much timing on it. The ball goes toward deep mid-wicket and they pick up another run.

47.31

Back of a length over middle, KL Rahul looks to pull off the back foot but gets it off the inside edge and down to deep backward square leg for a single.

47.21

BACK-TO-BACK HUNDREDS FOR SHREYAS IYER! What a fiery knock this has been from him and he takes off his helmet to rightfully soak in the applause from the crowd. This is pitched up on middle and Iyer just pushes it down to long on for a single.

47.16

SIX! Into the crowd again and Shreyas Iyer moves on to 99! Attempted slower delivery, right in the slot around middle, Iyer slogs this one away high and over the square leg fence for his eighth maximum of the game.

A huge call by the third umpire but it seems to be the right one! This is flighted, full and around off, Kane Williamson steers it wide of point and sets off for the run, but is sent back halfway through, he is a bit lazy to get back while the fielder throws at the keeper's end where the stumps light up. Indian players look confident and it goes upstairs. The replays, however, shows that KL Rahul has disturbed one bail before the ball has reached there and when the ball hits the stumps, Kane Williamson's bat is inside the crease. Not Out!

Is that a run out? Kane Williamson is a bit sloppy here getting back and Jasprit Bumrah scores a direct hit at the striker's end. On the replays, it seems KL Rahul has clipped the bails with his gloves before the ball reaches the bails. It is touch and go and the third umpire is taking a long hard look at it and deciphers that the bail was taken off before the ball reached the stumps and the other bail got knocked over when Williamson had managed to just slide his bat in the crease. NOT OUT comes up on the big screen!

Done and dusted with the pre-match formalities and it is now time for the play to begin! The two umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of New Zealand. The Indian opening pair of skipper, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill also stride out to the middle and the stadium is absolutely buzzing. Trent Boult has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Just the one wide slip in place, let's go...

We are minutes away from the start of the game but first, the officials walk out and the coveted trophy is placed upon a podium as well. It is a sea of blue and cheers of 'India, India' can be heard throughout the ground. Next up, the players along with their mascots line up for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of New Zealand first, followed by the Indian national anthem.

Kane Williamson, the skipper of New Zealand says that they would have batted first as well. Adds that they will try to use the new ball and hopes there will dew later on. Tells that four years ago, it was the same occasion but different venue. Says this should be an amazing game. Mentions that it has been a great effort from his side so far but it all comes down to this game. Informs they are unchanged as well.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that they will bat first. Adds that it looks like a good pitch, a bit on the slower side and they need to do well. Mentions that it was in 2019 when they played against the same Kiwi side in the semifinal and they know how they play their cricket. Also adds that it is a very important day but it is all about turning up on a given day and control the controllables. Informs that they are playing the same team.

New Zealand (Unchanged Playing XI) - Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson (C), Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham (WK), Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Trent Boult.

India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj.

TOSS - It is toss time in Mumbai for the 1st Semi Final. Rohit Sharma flips the coin and it lands in favour of him. India elected to BAT first.

Given the monumental nature of the clash and the game taking place in Mumbai, there will be a lot of celebrities in attendance. A couple of sporting royalties are also in the house and are having a bit of fun in the middle. Yes, Mumbai's own Sachin Tendulkar is one of those two big names and he is joined by iconic footballer David Beckham.

PITCH REPORT - Ravi Shastri is pitchside. He says that the spinners' length is bare and they will come into play from early doors. Adds that the track is hard enough and if there is dew, it will play well throughout and there is a bit of grass in the middle. Reckons that you want to bat first in a big game but won't be surprised if the chasing team wins the game. Simon Doull joins him and adds that the teams would want to put runs on the board but he also adds that if the team is one or two wickets down going into the phase when the dew comes in, they can easily chase down 8 runs in an over. Ravi adds that India has a much stronger middle order than 2019 and those middle overs will be very important. Doull ends by saying that Mitchell Santner holds the key for New Zealand and Rachin Ravindra could be used to open the bowling alongside Trent Boult given the amount of right-handers India has in its side.

New Zealand, on the other hand, started the tournament finely with four wins in a row but then they hit a bump losing the next four. Thanks to their good NRR and the win against Sri Lanka they remained in the top four. Rachin Ravindra has been a revelation for them and already has three hundreds to his name. Devon Conway has been a bit hot and cold but Kane Williamson has been in good form even though he missed a few games due to injury. Daryl Mitchell has also contributed well but their middle order needs to do more to challenge the hosts. They also have a tricky decision to choose between James Neesham and Mark Chapman. Their leading pacer, Trent Boult found his rhythm just at the right time and he has troubled the Indian top order on many occasions. Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson will also need to be at the top of their game with Mitchell Santner handling the spin department who has been good throughout this tournament. They faced defeat when these two sides met in the league stages and will hope to turn things around in this big game. Will it be India making it to the final after 12 years? Or will New Zealand get through to a third straight World Cup final? Let's find out together. Toss and team news in a bit.

India have no doubt been the team to beat in this World Cup and finished top of the table with nine consecutive wins. They have a settled team with each and every one contributing to their success in some way or the other. Their batting has been brilliant with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill giving them quick starts to set the tone while Virat Kohli has played the anchor role to perfection scoring a couple of hundreds as well. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are also coming into this game after registering smashing centuries in the last game. Their bowling has been one of the best if not the best in this tournament. Mohammed Shami has blown away the opposition while Jasprit Bumrah has been exceptional at all phases of the game. The spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja have exploited the home conditions well and will be key again in the middle overs while Mohammed Siraj has found his form back at the right time. They will be well aware of what happened in the last World Cup and will hope to take learnings and just continue the momentum to go past the Kiwis.

The form, the winning streak, nothing matters now and the team that can handle the pressure will go ahead. We have a repeat of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final as India takes on New Zealand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Men in Blue suffered heartbreak four years ago and will hope to avenge that defeat while the Kiwis will want to take some inspiration from that match and make it to their third final in a row. With that, we welcome you to the coverage of the first semifinal!

... MATCH DAY ...

After 45 games between 10 teams across 39 days, we are now down to four teams in the race for silverware at the 2023 ODI World Cup. Four teams deserving of reaching the semi-finals have made it through in India, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand to give us two mouthwatering semi-final clashes. The first semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup will be a repeat of the 2019 World Cup semi-final as India take on New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The host nation, India, breezed past all nine opponents to reach the semis with an unbeaten record, whereas the runners-up of the 2019 edition, New Zealand, progressed to the next stage with 5 wins. Except for that shaky start with the bat against Australia in the campaign opener, the Men in Blue have not missed a beat, but their real test starts now as they have been guilty of crumbling under pressure in knockouts. There was a lot of talk about their batting depth before the event, but different individuals putting their hands up across the nine games have diminished those discussions. It has been Rohit Sharma's positive intent upfront that has helped India get a good head start in their batting effort, and he has been well-complemented by Shubman Gill. The ever-reliable Virat Kohli has been consistent throughout, leading the run-scoring charts for India during the league stage. Returning from injuries, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have repaid the faith shown in them by the team management, while Suryakumar Yadav has impressed in the limited opportunities he has got. Although Ravindra Jadeja has not had much to do with the bat, he has made life difficult for opposition batters with the ball, along with his spin partner Kuldeep Yadav. When Hardik Pandya's ankle injury ruled him out, it seemed like India's team balance would take a hit, as would their results in future games. It did not happen, as the pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami have fired on all cylinders and outpaced their counterparts comprehensively. As far as New Zealand are concerned, they were off to an ideal start in the World Cup, winning their first four games. The Kiwis then hit a roadblock with four losses on the bounce and found themselves in a tussle with Pakistan and Afghanistan for a semi-final berth. However, a win against Sri Lanka proved enough for them to reach the semis, courtesy of their superior NRR. In the batting department, Rachin Ravindra has been their find of the tournament, and the southpaw has certainly made the big stage his own with three centuries to his name. Devon Conway's return to form comes just at the right time, while Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips have ensured that there is no shortage of firepower for the Kiwis. Despite missing out on most of the league games, Kane Williamson has made his presence felt, and expect him to deliver in this all-important game. Mitchell Santer has been successful in spinning a web with his guile and control, and he is one that the Kiwis will bank on against the right-hand batting-heavy India. In the absence of Matt Henry, Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson have stepped up to fill the void, but Tim Southee has not quite had the impact he is known for. Even though India got the better of New Zealand during the league stage, knockouts are a different ball game, and the Kiwis have had the upper hand in ICC events. Will New Zealand break Indian hearts again, as they did during the 2019 semi-final? Or will the Men in Blue continue their dominance and make it to the summit clash? We will find out together.
