There hasn't been one dull moment in this series and this is turning out to be a perfect culmination. The crowd is absolutely electric at the Wankhede and why not! India's hopes rely well and truly on Rishabh Pant as he walks out to resume his inning with Washington Sundar. ... DAY 3, SESSION 2 ...

But India's biggest enemy? Themselves. Instead of playing smart cricket with singles and calculated risks, they opted for rash unwanted shots and paid the price. And those earlier lusty blows from New Zealand's tail - Ajaz and Henry each clearing the ropes once - now felt like decisive punches in this nail-biting contest. Twelve precious runs turned from footnotes to headlines in this gripping chase. Well then, the equation now stands as - India needs 55 runs for a consolation win, and New Zealand are just 4 quality deliveries away from executing the clean sweep on the Indian soil. Who will handle the pressure well? We will find out in the second session that begins in about 40 minutes from now. Stay tuned.

Ajaz Patel though couldn't step a wrong foot in this game. Just as Pant and Jadeja looked set to steer India home, Ajaz Patel broke their 42-run stand. Call it a huge slice of luck for Pant, as him playing his usual fearless cricket, had earlier survived a close call - Latham's decision not to review coming back to haunt the Kiwis. This reprieve turned him into a crisis man for India as he constructed a precious 50 which of course looked more than a ton.

While Latham's tactical field placements kept the pressure cooker whistling, with the field being crowded near the batter, Pant had other ideas. True to his fearless philosophy, he danced down the track fearlessly, launching boundaries at will. His aggressive intent, coupled with Jadeja's calm presence at the other end, started shifting the momentum gradually. The scoreboard kept ticking on with timely singles and doubles.

New Zealand were never going to go without a fight and that's exactly what happened. Matt Henry drew first blood early, but it was Ajaz Patel who truly ignited the Kiwi charge, claiming two massive scalps in his first two overs. With the Wankhede pitch playing tricks and dancing to the tune of the spinners, 147 felt like scaling Everest. Latham's masterstroke of introducing Phillips paid instant dividends - his golden arm striking in the very first over. Before India could even blink, their batting fortress lay in ruins - Rohit, Jaiswal, Gill, Kohli, and Sarfaraz were all back in the pavilion scoring only 19 runs between them. From chase to crisis, the game had turned on its head with New Zealand closing in on executing the most unthinkable.

With a target of 147 runs that seemed achievable on paper, India's victory appeared within grasp. However, their persistent opening partnership troubles came back to haunt them. Rohit Sharma's impetuous decision to play a rash pull shot led to his downfall, while Shubman Gill's misjudgment resulted in his dismissal for just one run. What initially appeared to be a manageable chase quickly transformed into a daunting task as India found themselves three wickets down inside the first five overs with Virat too making zero impact.

Staring at a challenging position with only one wicket remaining, New Zealand's last pair of Ajaz Patel and William O'Rourke aimed to show resilience at the crease. The numbers paint a stark picture - The first session of Day 1 saw just three wickets before 11 wickets falling in the next two sessions. It's shaping up to be a classic low-scoring thriller, with neither batting lineup finding their comfort zone against these challenging conditions.

Right then, that is it from an enthralling Day 2 of this 3rd Test. India are slightly ahead in this game but as we have seen in this series, New Zealand will have their say and make it pretty difficult for the hosts to have it all their way. We are moving into Day 3 which is often called the 'Moving Day', and we are certainly going to get a result with a couple of days to spare in this game unless something extraordinary happens. Ravichandran Ashwin is up for a quick chat. He says he trusted his hands and went for that catch to dismiss Daryl Mitchell. On using the carrom ball, he says the wicket is itself divided into two halves. Tells it is responding differently from both ends. States that it is easier to bat from one end, and the batters also knew to take him on from that far end. Is hopeful that they will wrap things up with a couple of balls coming in the next day and also reckons that it won't be as easy to chase the target down either. But trusts his batters that they will do the needful. On being asked about the surface, he says it's a bit slow and he expected a lot of bounce on it. Adds it is not the typical Mumbai pitch and it is pretty slow in nature.

New Zealand knew that to just survive on this wicket was not going to work so they were proactive and looked for the runs. However, the Indian spinners were pretty good and kept on picking up wickets at regular intervals not letting any batters settle in. There were a few rash shots as well but the turning point was the stunning catch by Ravichandran Ashwin to dismiss Daryl Mitchell and break the 50-run stand. Will Young was the only one who looked settled and notched up a fifty as well. Glenn Phillips' quick-fire cameo took the lead past 100 but unfortunately for the Kiwis, they lost both of them in quick succession. It was the experienced duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja sharing seven wickets among them and restricting the Kiwis to 171/9 at the end of the day.

In the second session, the game changed pretty quickly with New Zealand fighting back in the game. Ajaz Patel led the charge for them finally finding his consistency and picking up a fine five-for restricting India to just a 28-run lead. Shubman Gill missed out on a ton by just 10 but played a crucial knock for his side while Washington Sundar also added important runs toward the end. The hosts started well with the ball as well with Akash Deep getting rid of Tom Latham, but Devon Conway and Will Young got through the session with the Kiwis trailing by 2 runs at Tea.

India came out with a positive mindset and Pant taking 12 runs off the first over of the day set the tone. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant dominated proceedings in the first session registering their respective fifties and chipping away into the lead quickly. The Kiwis were taken aback by that onslaught and took a backseat to try and contain the runs rather than going for wickets. They were also not helped by the fact that they dropped both the batters of Phillips' bowling. However, the move to bring Ish Sodhi into the attack worked as he broke the threatening 96-run stand and gave the Kiwis a glimmer of hope before Lunch.

What a fantastic day of Test cricket! This game has moved at such a fast pace that we have seen almost everything happen and it is only the end of Day 2. New Zealand have huffed and puffed their way to a 143-run lead but have just one wicket in hand. India will be pretty happy with their performance and the game is tilting slightly in their favour, but with how the pitch is reacting, chasing wont' be easy at all.

Jadeja stays around the stumps for the right-hander and bowls a quicker one on the good length. It lands on the middle stump line, gets a good grip and leaves the batter, cutting him into half. Matt Henry is drawn forward and brings his bat in front to defend but ends up playing inside the line of the ball. It goes past flirting with the outside edge and disturbs the furniture. Matt Henry departs on 10 off 16 and New Zealand are 171/9 with a lead of 143 runs. Also, with this wicket, IT IS STUMPS ON DAY 2!

An ambitious appeal for LBW but the umpire is unmoved again. Rohit Sharma has a word with his bowler and eventually decides to not review it. Akash Deep steams in from around the stumps and slips in a full toss on the stumps, angling on the leg stump line. Ajaz Patel plays a swipe across but misses and wears on the pad. Sliding down the leg side as confirmed by the Ball Tracking after a couple of deliveries.

Around the wicket now for the left-hander with two slips and a gully in position! Length-delivery, just a bit outside off, Ajaz Patel stands still in his crease and without any weight transfer, he tries to pull it across to the leg side. Misses to connect and Pant collects it behind the stumps at his chest level.

UltraEdge shows nothing and now they are checking it for LBW. Ball Tracking comes up with a green as the ball passes over the stumps on the projection. NOT OUT! The original decision for LBW was given Not Out as the appeal was for the catch.

The spinners have provided the maximum breakthroughs with the duo of Ashwin and Jadeja effectively undoing the batters. Ravichandran Ashwin in particular who had a pretty underwhelming series so far, proved to be the linchpin as he not only snagged a spectacular two-wicket haul but also grabbed a fabulous catch of the well-set Daryl Mitchell. Glenn Phillips tried to up the ante and did smoke a few out of the park but fell for his own aggression. New Zealand now lead by 103 runs but they need to add more to it. The challenge now is that they are into the long tail with only Will Young as the recognized batter. He has looked quite resolute through and through and a lot of responsibility now lies on his shoulders. India would like to get a couple of more wickets before the day's end while the visitors would be pleased to see through the day without any further casualty. Ajaz Patel finally found his rhythm after Lunch and showed why he loves bowling at Wankhede. He picked the Indian batters one by one and ended up with an excellent five-wicket haul. Glenn Phillips also chipped in with one and from a position where they thought they would concede a big lead, they did well to keep it under 30 runs. The pitch did start to help the spinners a lot more making batting really difficult. The fightback from the Kiwis has made this game effectively a shootout of whoever bats well in their second innings takes the game. They lost Tom Latham early, but Devon Conway and Will Young steadied the ship and ended the session trailing by just 2 runs. They will want to continue the good work and extend the partnership while the hosts will hope that they can exploit the conditions in the next session and pick up a few more wickets. SESSION SUMMARY - 95 runs and 6 wickets in 25.4 overs! Another exciting session in this Test and the game still hangs in the balance! India were well placed coming into this session but once again suffered a bit of a collapse which we have seen happen in recent times. From 203/5, they were reduced to 227/8 and their chances of getting a big lead evaporated quickly. Shubman Gill played well for his 90 but missed out on a ton. The lower middle order couldn't do much but a quick-fire 38 off 36 balls from Washington Sundar pushed India's lead to 28 runs before they got bowled out. The momentum continued with the ball as well with Akash Deep producing a beauty to get rid of the Kiwi skipper in the very first over.

A huge confident appeal for LBW but 'No' says the umpire. Rohit Sharma does not opt for a review. Pitches it on a good length, just outside off on the fourth stump line. ... DAY 2, SESSION 2 ...

Well then, the first session has flown by in this second day and it hangs right in balance with a slight tilt toward the hosts. With a long batting lineup still to follow, India will be keen to get the lead in the second session and stretch it into a potential one. While New Zealand's goal will be to run through the lower middle order as they have done throughout this Test series. An immersive post-Lunch session will begin right after 40 minutes or so. Stay tuned.

Ish Sodhi was introduced to create an inroad against the two well-set batters, who love to play against spin. He did make an impact by removing Pant off a prodigious turning delivery that caught him off guard. India could well had been 7 down had Henry and Chapman didn't shell those easy sitters. However, Pant's wicket slowed down things a bit as the boundaries dried up and Jadeja and Gill batted with the aim to just see through the session together. But more importantly, even in a slowdown, India prevented any maiden over.

New Zealand, despite starting the day in a commanding position, were caught off guard when Ajaz Patel faced an early charge against him in his opening over. Their frustration only mounted when a couple of catches were grassed off Phillips' bowling. India capitalized on that and balanced aggression with caution to wrest back momentum. Ajaz Patel who looked well the previous day, had his lines and lengths disturbed pretty early on and hence, New Zealand leaked runs at an alarming in the first hour.

Both of them eventually notched up their respective fifties. But it was Pant who took only 36 deliveries to do so in his customary approach. His whirlwind innings brought India's deficit down to double digits in what seemed like mere moments. The ball was turning with variable bounce, but what Indian batters did here was use their feet effectively to negate any trouble. Rather than getting bogged down, they minimized dot balls, ensuring the scoreboard ticked along consistently.

The first hour of Test cricket often proves critical for the batters, and India faced a daunting challenge with their backs to the wall. However, Rishabh Pant made an immediate statement, especially relishing the contest against Ajaz. Brushing aside the previous evening's dramatic collapse, he launched into an eventful first over that set an assertive tone for India. At the other end, Shubman Gill settled in nicely, showing impressive defensive technique and benefiting from a vital dropped chance. The partnership flourished as Pant maintained his aggressive intent while Gill provided steady support.

LUNCH, DAY 2! Session Summary - 24 overs, 109 runs, 1 wicket. Aggression and resilience. All about the first session summed up. India would be mightily pleased to walk back into the sheds losing just a solitary wicket and effectively shrinking the deficit to just 40 runs courtesy to that 96-run alliance between Gill and Pant. New Zealand, on the other hand, leaked runs at an alarming rate of almost 4.5 rpo and need to regroup to strike back.

Halt. The spider cam is stuck just over the ground, and hence a slight delay. The umpires are waiting for it to move up. It seems to have malfunctioned and there are only about four minutes to go for Lunch. And just when the umpires called for Lunch, the spider cam started working, but the players had already started walking off the field by then. Pretty weird way to end an engaging first session of play.
