Commentary

Right then, yet another game has flown by in the 2023 Cricket World Cup and now begins the final week of the group stage of the competition and a very crucial one at that. First up is a clash between two wounded Asian teams, Bangladesh take on Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, the 6th of November. That game will begin at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT) but as usual, our build-up will begin much sooner. Do join us for all the action. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that they are getting better every game and they have played some decent cricket in the last three games. Adds that they overcame challenges against England and Sri Lanka and in this game also they needed someone like Virat Kohli to bat deep and construct the innings. Tells that it is important to keep faith in the players and let them express themselves freely out there. Says look at Mohammed Shami on how he wasn't playing in the first few games but has made a fine comeback in the team and the same goes with Shreyas Iyer who had a couple of off days but has found his form back which is good for them. Mentions that there was no plan to attack in the first Powerplay and they just try to play on instinct. Praises Jadeja for his performance and says that his experience in the middle helps a lot and he has served the team for a long time. Says they don't want to look much ahead and that is a thing they also talk about in the dressing room and want to take one game at a time. Ends by saying that there is only one league game left but after that a couple of important games and they want to continue this momentum going forward in the tournament.

Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa says they know it is a challenge and is aware of the narrative about them chasing but when they have a conversation as a batting group, they need to reflect on it. Adds that the first 10 overs with the bowl hurt them quite a bit and the biggest challenge was taking wickets and they couldn't do that as Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were able to put on a big stand. Mentions that they did get a good look at the conditions here and they knew it would deteriorate and if they play their semifinals here, they will need to adapt to the conditions accordingly.

Virat Kohli is the Player of the Match for his brilliant ton! Kohli says that it was a big game. Adds that they were probably playing the toughest team in the tournament and the motivation was already there in the team. He says that honestly, he did have a feeling that this was not only going to be another World Cup game but a bit more and because it happened on his birthday, it became even more special. Mentions that when the openers start like that, you want to continue it that way but the pitch slowed down drastically later. Says that on pitches like this, if you get out that could make a difference in the score but once they got over 315 they knew that they were in a comfortable position. Further adds that he is enjoying playing cricket and which is important for him and he feels blessed that God has given him this enjoyment again. Tells that it is all a bit too much to take in and to equal his hero's record is a huge honor for him. Says people like comparisons but he will never be going to be as good as Sachin Tendulkar but getting the appreciation from his idol is an emotional moment for him and he knows where he comes from and all this means a lot to him.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first on a surface that looked certain to turn as the game went on and did extremely well to get those quick runs inside the first Powerplay. Once the ball got even slightly older, it got difficult to bat on but Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer put on a big stand for the 3rd wicket to put India in command. Iyer fell after a half-century but Kohli kept going. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja played handy cameos but it was the birthday boy who went on to score a ton and equalled the great Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI tons. With the ball, Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi were poor up top and it was Kagiso Rabada who brought some control back with the wicket of the Indian skipper. Keshav Maharaj bowled a lovely spell but managed to pick up just one wicket and even though he and Rabada remained fairly economical, the rest of the pack was put to the sword. In reply, the Indian bowling unit was all over a sheepish-looking South African batting lineup and wrapped up another big win.

South Africa came into this contest with a lot of confidence and a lot of runs behind them but their shortcomings have been exposed and they simply cannot chase under pressure. This was also their lowest score ever in a World Cup but they need to put this loss behind them and look forward to the semifinals, which in all likelihood they will play at this very ground. The main man up top, Quinton de Kock was sent packing very early and after that, Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen put up a bit of a fight but couldn't muster up any runs. Once the bowling changes came, the Proteas lineup simply self-destructed and not a single batter, all of them who were in form, were able to get going. It just kept on getting worse and they eventually folded out on a meager 83 runs, losing the game by 243 runs.

GONE WITH THE WIND!  And, just like that India have blown away arguably the best batting unit at this World Cup and have yet again stamped their authority with their 8th successive win. Fireworks erupt all across the stadium as well! On an abrasive surface, India did extremely well to not just get near 300 runs but go well beyond it and that score on the board had done half the job for them. The seamers upfront though were once again on the money. Jasprit Bumrah was at his economical best at one end building up pressure and then Mohammed Siraj got the early and all-important wicket of Quinton de Kock. Rohit Sharma ringed in the changes inside the first Powerplay and brought on the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami, both of whom had an immediate impact and ran through the Proteas batting order. Jadeja was simply relentless and ended up with a stellar five-wicket haul, only the second Indian spinner to achieve that feat in ODI World Cups, following in the footsteps of Yuvraj Singh. Kuldeep Yadav too made good use of the surface and ended up with a couple of wickets.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! We can see the Indian players in a huddle where Rohit Sharma is giving them a pep talk. Now, they spread out to take their respective field positions. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma are the two openers for South Africa. Jasprit Bumrah to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, India have posted a really good total on the board and if there is no dew, they will be confident enough to defend this on their turning track. South Africa haven't chased well in this World Cup but they have enough quality to do so in this game. However, they do have a huge task on their hand if they want to make a statement and break the unbeaten run of the hosts. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.

The man of the moment, Virat Kohli is up for a chat. He says that it was a wicket that was tricky to bat on but they got a fast start. Adds that he tried to build on it but after the first 10 overs, it got tougher to bat on and he and Shreyas Iyer started to build a stand. Mentions that the plan was to build a stand and he and Shreyas had a lot of practice sessions leading up to the Asia Cup and he reckoned that this partnership could be crucial for the side. Adds that you need to get to a stage where the opposition is put under pressure and applauds Shreyas for playing the way he did. Says that it is amazing to achieve the 49th ton on his birthday and that too in front of such a brilliant crowd feels blessed. Ends by saying that the ball gripped in the middle phase and they have the runs on the board and a quality bowling attack to defend this total.

South Africa, on the other hand, were initially blown away by the Indian openers and things didn't look that great for them. However, Kagiso Rabada got that first breakthrough straight after coming into the attack and Keshav Maharaj followed it up with a dream dismissal of Shubman Gill. Although, the spinners kept the runs in check in the middle overs but they couldn't pick up wickets which let the batters get used to the wicket and attack them once they got set. Lungi Ngidi did manage to get rid of Shreyas Iyer but Virat Kohli proved to be a tough nut to crack. We saw Boult and Afridi having an off day in the New Zealand and Pakistan game and another left-arm pacer in Marco Jansen also had an off day in this match as he was very expensive but managed to get a wicket as well. Tabraiz Shamsi also chipped in with one but they have conceded a lot of runs and it is up to their batters now to put on a show at the Eden Gardens if they want to get anything out of this game.

India got off to an absolute flying start with both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill dealing only in boundaries. They added 62 runs for the first wicket in no time before Rohit was dismissed after an entertaining 40. Virat Kohli joined Gill and maintained the momentum before Gill got out to a ripper of a delivery from Keshav Maharaj. Then the birthday boy and Shreyas Iyer had to work hard for every run as the spinners started to put pressure on them. They kept their patience and did not throw their wickets away and also rotated the strike well to get through that tough phase. Both the batters registered fine fifties and Iyer took responsibility to up the ante and started attacking the bowlers. They built up a 134-run partnership but unfortunately, Iyer lost his wicket after scoring a gritty 77. Kohli held one end nicely and finally got to his 49th ODI ton on a special occasion and on the ground where it all started. He remained unbeaten on 101 while a couple of quick-fire knocks from Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja got them to a a massive score in the end.

Take a bow, KING KOHLI! The chase master has chased down the master. He has equalled the record of the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar of 49 ODI hundreds and makes his 35th birthday even more special. The Men in Blue will surely be the happier side going into the break.

Just the single to end but 17 runs come off the final over! Very full and at the batter, Virat Kohli walks toward the ball and meets it on the full before flicking it away through mid-wicket. Kohli tries to push for two but it's never on and they stay content with the single. India finish with 326/5 on the board!

49.51

Full and straight, gets it pretty bang on this time, Ravindra Jadeja hits it away firmly toward long on for just a single this time.

49.44

FOUR! Ravindra Jadeja is spitting fire and India are putting on a mammoth total here. Full and wide this time, Jadeja creams this one past the diving fielder at cover and then beats the diving fielder at wide long on as well to find the fence.

49.34

FOUR! Not a single man moved! Full and straight, doesn't quite get it in the blockhole. Ravindra Jadeja clears the front leg and drills it to the right of long on for another boundary. 11 already off the final over.

Halt! Lungi Ngidi is holding his hamstring and it is not looking good as he sits down on the ground. Unfortunately, he has to leave the field with that injury as they do not want to take any chances. Marco Jansen will finish the over.

49.26

SIX! Oh, what a sweet sound off the bat! Another slower delivery, pitched up right in the slot around off and in the hitting arc. Ravindra Jadeja is just waiting for the slower one, he then sits down and clobbers it away into the stands over the mid-wicket fence for a biggie.

49.21wd

Wide! Full and wide outside off, a bit too wide and goes beyond the tramline.

49.10

Swing and a miss! Comes from around the wicket and serves a fuller delivery outside off, angling it in and the ball is taken off the ball as well. Ravindra Jadeja dances down the track and looks to throw the kitchen sink at it but is well beaten.

Who will bowl the last over? It will be Lungi Ngidi (8-0-56-1). Can he keep India under 320?

Siraj adjusts his length and bowls it on a hard length around off, trying to angle the ball across. Quinton de Kock looks for the square cut but the width isn't there and the feet don't go anywhere either. De Kock ends up playing at it with a closed bat face and gets an inside edge back onto the stumps. That one actually straightened a bit from Siraj.

OUT! CAUGHT! A big effort from Quinton de Kock to take that catch and Tabraiz Shamsi sends Suryakumar Yadav packing at a vital time. Shamsi tosses this one up on a length and around off, trying to turn it back in. SKY looks to play the reverse sweep but gets himself into a real tangle. The ball takes the glove and lobs up around short leg. De Kock scurries across and puts in a full-length dive to pouch it just before the ball hits the turf. It is sent upstairs to be checked and everything seems fine.

Done with the pre-match formalities and it is now time to get the play underway. The two umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of South Africa. The Indian coach Rahul Dravid rings the bell to mark the start of the match. The Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill too stride out to the middle. Lungi Ngidi has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

We are minutes away from the start of this much-awaited clash! But first, the two teams will line up along with the mascots for their respective national anthems. It will be the national anthem of South Africa first, followed by the Indian national anthem.

Temba Bavuma, the skipper of South Africa says that they would have batted first as well. Adds that it will be nice challenge to chase as that is an area where they need to gain more confidence. Mentions that they have been performing consistently and will look to improve going forward in the tournament. Informs they have made one change as Tabraiz Shamsi comes in for Gerald Coetzee.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India says that they will bat first. Adds that it looks like a good pitch but it's more about what they want to do as a team. Mentions that it is going to be a good game between two top sides who have played consistent cricket and it will be a challenge and it will be nice to come out on top in this game. Says that he loves to play here as a player and the team too loves to play here. Informs that they are playing the same team and reckons they don't need to change anything and the bowling lineup has done the job in the last few matches.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Temba Bavuma (C), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi (In place of Gerald Coetzee).

India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj.

TOSS - Rohit Sharma flips the coin and it lands in favour of him. India have elected to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Ravi Shashtri and Irfan Pathan are pitchside. They say that this pitch looks much better than the last game that was played in this stadium. It will still assist the spinners and there are more patches on this track. The pitch has got some tan to it and there more grass as well but both sides have all bases covered. The skipper winning the last should look to bat first is their final conclusion.

Virat Kohli, the talismanic Indian batter turns 35 today and he returns to the ground where he scored his first ODI hundred and will once again be in search of that record-equalling 49th ODI ton. A massive occasion for both teams but a very special one for Kohli. The toss is coming up in a bit.

South Africa, on the other hand, became the second team to qualify for the semis thanks to a stunning win for Pakistan against the Kiwis. The Proteas batting has been sensational with Quinton de Kock leading the run-scorers charts with three hundreds as well. Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller all have played some fantastic knocks in different matches which has helped them to get to this position. However, they have struggled a bit while chasing targets and that is an area they will need to work on quickly as we are in the business end of this mega event. Their bowling also has been excellent with Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, and Lungi Ngidi getting those crucial breakthroughs while Kagiso Rabada is still searching for his top form. Keshav Maharaj handles the spin department while Tabraiz Shamsi can be another good option on slow wickets. They destroyed New Zealand in their last game and will be riding high on confidence to put up a real challenge for the hosts. Will they become the first team to defeat India? Or will the Men in Blue continue their dominating win streak? We will find out soon. Toss and team news in a bit.

India have been absolutely terrific in this World Cup and are on a dream run with seven consecutive victories. Their batting has been brilliant and if Rohit Sharma doesn't get you, Virat Kohli will and if he fails then KL Rahul or Shubman Gill will step up. The positive for them is that Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer both scored runs in the last game and found their form back. Kohli just missed out on equalling Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 hundreds in ODIs but the occasion is perfect for him to achieve that feat in this game on his birthday and at the ground where he scored his first ever ODI hundred. The only setback for them is that Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the tournament but their balance hasn't been affected that much. Mohammed Shami has been breathing fire since getting back in the team while Mohammed Siraj also found his rhythm against Lanka and Jasprit Bumrah has been consistently good at all phases of the game. The spin duo Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja also has been contributing well and they will hope they continue to perform in all three departments and make it eight wins in a row.

Hello and welcome folks! The stage is set for the battle of the bests at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It is first vs second, it is the best bowling attack against the best batting, it is India taking on South Africa with the top spot on the line. The hosts are still unbeaten and with another win here can cement their league leaders status while the high-flying Proteas will hope to spoil the party and break the winning run of India.

... MATCH DAY ...

We have seen some exciting clashes in the 2023 Cricket World Cup and we have some big teams being dealt a heavy blow and blown away but amidst all the chaos, two sides have been head and shoulders above the rest - India and South Africa. The two top sides take on each other at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata in Match number 37 of the competition and this game could determine which side finishes top of the points table when the group stage ends. Hosts India have been unblemished so far and are coming into this clash on the back of an unbelievable 302-run victory against Sri Lanka. It was a game where the likes of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer all played extremely well but missed out on a ton and a game where we saw India's pace trio simply run through Lanka's batting order. Jasprit Bumrah was consistent as usual but it was Mohammed Siraj who was back to his best against an opposition he loves so dearly. With the job done upfront, Mohammed Shami once again came in and ripped through the rest of the batting order notching up yet another five-fer and that has taken his tally to 13 wickets in just 3 games in this tournament and he also became India's all-time leading wicket-taker in ODI World Cups. With Hardik Pandya ruled out, expect this pace trio to continue ruling the roost. South Africa on the other hand have been near perfect themselves with just one shock loss against the Netherlands against their name. They have notched up some big victories including those against Australia and England but their rout of an in-form New Zealand side in their last game was simply sensational. Quinton de Kock may be on notice period but is having the time of his life with the likes of Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller all in sublime form as well and that makes for a very, very potent batting line up. The bowling is no slouch either as Marco Jansen has been prolific in the first Powerplay and the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj have been able to build on the early foundation laid down. India have been hardly challenged so far in this tournament and it seems the Proteas are the ones who are the most likely to cause an upset. But can they do it? Or will India blow them away like they have done to all other sides? We shall find out.
