Commentary

Right then! That is it from this match. Final double-header coming up in the World Cup. On the 11th of this month, Australia will take on Bangladesh and later, England will face Pakistan. Join us at 10.30 am IST (5 am GMT) and earlier for all the action. Cheers!

Hashmatullah Shahidi says that he is quite happy with the performance of his team throughout the tournament. Adds that they fought till the end and there were a lot of good matches and a lot to learn as well. Tells that he is proud that their batters contributed massively in this World Cup as before this tournament, they were struggling a bit. Mentions that they already had a good bowling attack and now with the batters also stepping up, they will be a strong side in the near future. Says that they gave a good message to the world in this World Cup as they played against big teams and fought hard. Further adds that in the Australia game also, it was in their hands but it was a shock for them especially for him the way Maxwell batted. Ends by saying they are taking a lot of learnings.

Temba Bavuma says his leg is sore but hopes to be fine. Adds he had the option to come off but he wanted to be out there and lead the team. It was a bit risky but he wanted to be out there. Reckons winnings is their habit and want to carry on the momentum. Mentions chasing will give them a lot of confidence. Says Rassie van der Dussen took the ownership and was a fantastic knock. Tells the wicket got better, when Keshav Maharaj came for the second spell, the ball wasn't turning much. Shares they want to play here again but there is a big hurdle first in Kolkata and they will shift their focus now.

Rassie van der Dussen wins the PLAYER OF THE MATCH AWARD. He says that they were happy chasing here as they would have bowled first as well. Adds that they knew that the Afghans have a good spin attack and they wanted to challenge themselves. Tells that while chasing someone has to play that anchor role and they had great start with Bavuma and De Kock which allowed him to assess the situation. Mentions that he was happy to play that role and is happy that they got over the line. Says that they have been 50-50 while chasing and that is an area they hope to improve and they wanted to put themselves in this situation in this game. Further adds that they have taken a lot of learnings from the last two games. Ends by saying that the pitch in Kolkata was a lot drier and lower as well and they know what to expect. He hopes that if they get back here in the final, they put on a similar performance.

...Presentation next...

It is the same old story for Afghanistan who just like against Australia, they have failed to close the game on a positive note. They were in such a good position with spinners bowling from both ends and keeping it tight but just one loose over in between was taking the pressure off. Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan were just superb but South Africa somehow found runs. Afghanistan though were clearly 15-20 runs short. That ends the journey for Afghanistan who finish sixth for now.

South Africa were chasing a par total but it wasn't easy with so many spinners and the pitch assisting them. The openers scored easily against the seamers but once the like of Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi were introduced, things started to happen. Wickets started to fall but Rassie van der Dussen locked himself at one end. The middle order got a start but fell and it was Andile Phehlukwayo who got up for the job. Playing his first game of the season, Andile Phehlukwayo was struggling but hanged in there along with Rassie van der Dussen to take his team over the line.

Sensible cricket from South Africa. A well matured knock from Rassie van der Dussen who has shown time after time why an anchoring role is important in this format. Job well done by South Africa and they head into the semi-finals with a win on their back.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are already out in the middle now. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma are the two openers for South Africa. Afghanistan going with spi straightaway as Mujeeb Ur Rahman has the new ball in hand. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

South Africa will be happy too but could have closed the innings a lot earlier. They allowed a couple of batters to hit some easy runs and get the pressure off. Lungi Ngidi went for runs but the pick of the bowler was Gerald Coetzee who ended with four. Keshav Maharaj too bowled a tidy spell. South Africa have done well while chasing this season. They will be confident to chase this down. Their batters need to perform after their game against India and so does Afghanistan who have to bowl well after their game against Australia. Stay tuned for the chase.

A superb fightback from Afghanistan and Omarzai. A total which Afghanistan will feel confident with however, credit goes to one man only, Azmatullah Omarzai, he did all the work and deserved a century today. Afghanistan chose to bat and got off to a good start but both the openers fell inside ten overs. It was Azmatullah Omarzai who held one side with a lot of effort but got no able support from the other end. The tail did show some character as Afghanistan from 116 for 6 ended with a par total.

OUT! RUN OUT! Heartbreak for Azmatullah Omarzai as he fails to get to his ton. Three brilliant balls there from Rabada. An outstanding yorker on middle this is jammed back to the bowler. The non striker is off but Azmatullah Omarzai holds his ground. Rabada flicks the bails off at his end. A top last over from him. Afghanistan end with 244!

49.50

A dot! Just the one ball now to get three runs. A short ball on middle, Azmatullah Omarzai looks to pull but misses.

49.40

49.31

Naveen gets Azmatullah Omarzai back on strike. Shorter and on middle, this is nudged on the leg side for one.

49.21

46.51

Good slower one. Mujeeb had to hold back his heave. It goes off the outside edge down to third man for one.

46.46

SIX! OFF THE MARK IN STYLE! No hanging around. He knew he was going to get a short one and he does. He pulls it well over the fine leg fence for a biggie. This is turning out to be the kind of over Afghanistan needed.

We are all set. The players are out in the middle. Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz to open for Afghanistan. Two slips in place for Kagiso Rabada who is playing his 100th ODI match. Let's go...

It is time for the national anthems. It will be Afghanistan first followed by South Africa's.

Rashid Khan is up for a chat. He says as a team they are proud of the way they have played but the last game was tough to take on. Adds they would definitely face games like that again in the future but they have to stay together. Reckons they have to back their skills and talent and they have done well so far across different places. Mentions batting was a big positive for them and also, the way they have finished the game is a big achievement.

AFGHANISTAN (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi (C), Azmatullah Omarzai, Ikram Alikhil (WK), Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq.

SOUTH AFRICA (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock (WK), Temba Bavuma (C), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo (In for Marco Jansen), Gerald Coetzee (In for Tabraiz Shamsi), Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi.

Temba Bavuma says they have done well chasing and hopes to do so today. Adds they came up against an in-form India side but they had conversations about it. Informs about the changes, Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi have been rested. Reckons dew has been a big factor and hopes the ball skids on under the lights.

Hashmatullah Shahidi says they will bat first as the surface might help the spinners later on. Informs they are unchanged. Adds the last match was a tough one but they have to move forward and think about this match.

TOSS - Afghanistan have won the toss and will BAT first.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, were flying high this season with the aim for top four but the demolishing loss against Australia wasn't just morale drowning but also have put their chances close to impossible. They are virtually not yet out  and will hope to finish the tournament on a high note. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

We are into the final week of the group-stage and the top four have almost been decided. Hello and welcome to the clash between South Africa vs Afghanistan. A place in the semi-finals is permanent for the Proteas who have been one of the best teams in this year's tournament. It was just a small bump against India as they were beaten quite comprehensively but South Africa will hope to finish the round robin on a high.

...MATCH DAY...

We are almost at the tail end of the league stages of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Match 42 will see Afghanistan going up against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. This is a very important match to ensure the 4th spot on the points table. Afghanistan has had its best campaign in a World Cup. They unfortunately missed out on a win in their last game courtesy of a heroic knock by Glenn Maxwell. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran look good at the top of the order, giving strong starts. Zadran also became the first centurion for Afghanistan in World Cups after he scored 129 against the Aussies. Their skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi is leading by example handling the middle order well and stabilizing the innings allowing Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan to end the innings strongly. The batting lineup for Afghanistan has improved a lot over these 8 matches they played. In their last game, the bowlers were fantastic in the opening stages with Naveen-ul-Haq, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Rashid Khan taking 2 wickets each but after that, they failed to keep the wickets coming and unfortunately lost the game. Naveen-ul-Haq looks very strong with the new ball and is certainly a threat to the batters. The spinners, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman are also among the wickets throughout the World Cup. This match will be very important for Afghanistan and they will have to beat the Proteas by a good margin to have a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. South Africa on the other hand has had an amazing campaign with all their players performing well. They have established themselves as a dangerous side when they're batting first but struggle a bit during chasing. Unfortunately, they are coming into this match after a very embarrassing defeat against India where they were bowled out for 83 runs. Throughout their campaign, their batting order has been their strength. Quinton de Kock is fantastic at the top and has scored a few centuries along with Rassie van der Dussen who has also been in great form. David Miller, Aiden Markram, and Heinrich Klaasen are the powerhouses and have given very explosive ends to their side. Their bowling has also managed to defend their scores with Marco Jansen blowing strongly with the new ball. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi have also shown their skill in these spinning conditions by taking timely wickets. Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee also look in good rhythm and are hitting the right line and length which troubles the opposition. This is the last match for both teams in the league stages. South Africa will look to win this match and boost their morale after their last game while Afghanistan has a lot riding on this match. They will also try to defeat this strong side to have a chance to qualify for the semi-finals. Which team are you supporting?
