Commentary

Right then, what a fabulous contest we have witnessed here at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent and the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup just keeps giving us these humdingers which the neutrals certainly enjoy a lot. Also, in Tarouba, New Zealand have demolished a hapless Uganda side by 9 wickets in what is a consolation win for the Kiwis. There's still group stage action left in the tournament and next up, it will be India taking on Canada in Lauderhill on Saturday, 15 June at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT) but as usual, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Till then, take care and goodbye!

Aiden Markram, the South African skipper says that he is grateful to have got the win. Adds that they were not at their best and were on the back foot for the most part of the game. Mentions that pace is their strength and they want to back it. Shares that it was challenging for the Nepalese batters when the pacers hit the right lengths. Lauds the Nepal bowling made it tough for them and the run-scoring was difficult. Adds that Nepal are a quality side. States that they want to prepare well going forward as the conditions in the Caribbean will be different from those in the USA. Shares that they need to assess, adapt, and develop their plans going forward. Ends by saying that they wanted to give Tabraiz Shamsi, some gametime and with Keshav Maharaj in the mix, both the spinners will play a key role going forward.

Nepal's skipper, Rohit Paudel says that he is very proud of the unit given the way they bowled and even batted. Adds that they knew the wicket would have been on the slower side and once they got a bit of a feel while bowling, they knew spinners would be the way to go. Reckons that they didn't quite manage to do well in the crunch moments and if they keep up the good work, next time, they will get over the line. On the fans, he says that he wants to thank everyone who has come in from so far and even those at home who watch them and support them.

Tabraiz Shamsi is the Player of the Match for his terrific spell. He says that he is definitely relieved as they came into the game with the intention of making four out of four. Adds that the game got close but they came out on the winning side. Lauds the Nepal side as they used the conditions well and played a wonderful game. Mentions that they have been put under pressure and came out victorious which is a positive for them. Ends by sharing that they want to take one game at a time.

The Presentation ceremony...

After having bowled brilliantly and restricted South Africa to just 115 runs, Nepal knew that a decent start in the Powerplay would help them a lot and they did get just that. Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh played and missed a few deliveries early on but managed to get away a few lovely boundaries as well. Bhurtel was the first one to fall and skipper, Rohit Paudel soon followed. Aasif Sheikh however stayed on and gave Nepal real hope of an upset. Anil Sah supported him well but when things got tight, neither of them could stay at the crease and it was left to the tail-enders to get the job done. Sompal Kami and Gulshan Jha gave it a fair fight in the last couple of overs but it just wasn't meant to be.

South Africa have pulled out another rabbit out of the hat and this team just seems to find a way but they will know that they certainly need to up their game, especially on the batting front if they are to keep winning in the next stage of the competition. On a pitch that aided the spinners, they only had one proper option with skipper, Aiden Markram acting as the part-timer. The Powerplay proved that pace wasn't the right way as they failed to pick up a single wicket. The wickets did come in the middle overs as Tabraiz Shamsi picked up a couple and Markram got one too. Still, the Proteas needed something special and with the required rate under run-a-ball, it had to be something special. Shamsi stepped up once again and bowled a gem of an 18th over, picking up a couple of more wickets and right at the very death, Ottneil Baartman managed to hold his nerves to keep the unbeaten record going.

SOUTH AFRICA HAVE DONE IT AGAIN AND IT IS HEARTBREAK-HOTEL FOR NEPAL! The Proteas have played 4 games and after the first game, all remaining three games have been low-scoring thrillers which they have managed to win whilst not being at their best but they have managed to win every single game and that's the mark of a good side. Nepal though, were so close to getting their first T20I win against a Test-playing nation and they will feel, they let it slip right at the death and this loss means, Bangladesh are all but through to the Super 8s alongside South Africa but Netherlands are still in with an outside chance in Group D.

OUT! RUN-OUT! SOUTH AFRICA HOLD THEIR NERVE! AGONY FOR NEPAL! They have fallen short by just one run. Ottneil Baartman bowls it short again, around off. Jha plays and misses again. The batters look to scamper for a bye as de Kock throws it at the bowler's end but the ball hits the back of Jhas. Heinrich Klaasen collects it quickly and knocks down the stumps. Gulshan Jha is short of his crease and Nepal fails to get over the line. Soo close and yet so far for Nepal.

What happened here? Drama right at the death, wow! That could probably be the most heartbreaking way for Nepal to lose the game. De Kock's throw ricocheted off the batter but Heinrich Klaasen was right there and he flicked the ball onto the stumps at the bowler's end. The replays show that Gulshan Jha was just short of his crease and OUT comes up on the big screen. Even if Klaasen had missed, South Africa might have appealed for obstruction of field as well given Jha ran straight down the middle of the pitch.

2 required off the final ball! Are we heading into a Super Over?

Quinton de Kock takes a sharp catch and is given by the on-field umpire. Dipendra Singh Airee goes for the review. The replays show a clear spike on the glove and Airee is a goner. Nepal lose their fourth!

17.21

Floated on off. Aasif Sheikh skips down the pitch and drills it to long on for a single.

Commentary

Welcome back for the chase. South Africa are in a huddle before they spread out to the field. The pair of Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh will open for Nepal. It will be Marco Jansen with the ball for South Africa. Here we go!

…THE RUN CHASE…

Right then, Nepal needs 116 to win and create history as they are facing a high-quality Test-playing nation. Can the batters continue to good work done by the bowlers and chase this down or will the South African pace attack come charging at Nepal? We shall find out. Join us in a bit for the second essay.

Kushal Bhurtel is up for a chat. He says the wicket was a bit slow and his role was to bowl disciplined lines. Adds that the light got a bit into his eyes when he dropped that catch and reckons they have a real chance to beat a Test-playing nation. Shares it is a slow wicket but they can win.

For Nepal, the spinners came to the party and barely gave freebies to the Proteas’ batters. Dipendra Singh Airee and Kushal Bhurtel were the pick of the bowlers with three and four wickets respectively while the rest of the attack was fairly economical. Rohit Paudel used 14 overs of spin on this pitch and it did wonders for them. Nepal will be pleased with their bowling effort but they still have the job in hand with the bat.

A terrific bowling display from Nepal has restricted South Africa to 115 for 7 in their 20 overs. Having inserted into bat first, South Africa lost de Kock early but Hendricks and Markram stuck around and added 46 for the second wicket. The wicket of Markram brought in a slide as Klaasen and Miller followed him quickly into the pavilion. Reeza Hendricks was the top scorer with a sluggish 43 off 49 while Tristan Stubbs with an unbeaten 27 off 18, stuck a few lusty blows to take this side to a fighting score. The onus will now be on the bowlers to defend the score.

OUT! STUMPED! Kushal Bhurtel ends with a four-fer and Nepal will be ecstatic with that bowling display. Burtel tosses the ball up on a dragged length on leg stump. Kagiso Rabada steps out to go big over long on but gets beaten all ends up and Aasif Sheikh has an easy stumping job to do behind the stumps. South Africa finish with a meager total of 115 for 7 on the board.

Kagiso Rabada is the new man in.

19.5W

OUT! TALEN! Kushal Bhurtel with his third wicket and what a bowling performance this has been from Nepal. Bhurtel goes into the pitch and slows it up, getting the ball to turn away from off stump. Marco Jansen goes on the back foot and looks to slog it over long on but the connection isn't there. Anil Sah there dives across to his right and manages to hold onto the catch.

19.41

Looking for two but won't get it. Slower and shorter, turning away from middle and leg, Tristan Stubbs presses back and just nudges it to the leg side for a single.

19.30

Trying too much there, Tristan Stubbs. Nicely flighted outside off and turning away. Stubbs tries to reverse sweep but misses and gets hit on the hands.

19.22

Tossed up again, outside off stump, Tristan Stubbs reaches out and slaps the ball away towards deep cover for a couple of runs.

19.16

All in readiness now as the teams and match officials make their way to the ground for the National Anthems. We begin with the anthem of Nepal followed by that of South Africa. Live action is not far away.

This is the first meeting between these two sides in International cricket. Sandeep Lamichhane has joined the squad and is in the playing XI today. The leg-spinners's experience could be handy for the Nepalese side.

Pitch Report: The experts reckon that there is a gentle breeze around the ground at 12 kmph and the boundaries are 67 and 61 meters on the square while 76 meters down the ground. They further add that there is a bit of grass that should assist the spinners and the pacers as well. End by mentioning that 160 should be a par score and the South African pacers should enjoy bowling on this surface.

Aiden Markram, the South African skipper, says that they were looking to bat first so not unhappy with the toss result. Shares that they wanted to give some time to the batters in the middle. Mentions that they are excited about the clash as Nepal have done well in the past 12-18 months. Ends by sharing that Keshav Maharaj gets a break and Tabraiz Shamsi comes in for him.

Rohit Paudel, the Nepal captain, says that they will bowl first as the second innings will have dew and batting will be easier. Mentions that they had a good time to prepare and work on their skills in the past 10 days.

Nepal (Playing XI) - Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh(WK), Anil Sah, Rohit Paudel(C), Kushal Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, Gulshan Jha, Sompal Kami, Karan KC, Sandeep Lamichhane (in for Sagar Dhakal), Abinash Bohara.

South Africa (Playing XI) - Quinton de Kock(WK), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram(C), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Ottneil Baartman, Tabraiz Shamsi (in for Keshav Maharaj).

Toss Update: Nepal have won the toss and opted to BOWL.

Nepal, on the flip side, have had two games so far with a loss and another game being abandoned due to rain. The Nepalese are in a must-win territory if they are to keep their hopes alive of going into the Super 8 stage. Nepal played the Netherlands in their first game where they faced testing conditions. The batting could only muster 106 runs but the bowlers gave a tough fight and took the game in the penultimate over but came on the losing side. Nepal faces a giant task and will have to bring out their A-game against the Proteas. Can Nepal pose a challenge or will South Africa continue their winning run? Let's find out. Toss and team news in a bit. Stay tuned!

Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Match 31 in the T20 World Cup, 2024. It's a Group D clash where South Africa are taking on Nepal at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent. South Africa have already booked their place for the next round with a hat-trick of wins and are unbeaten in the competition so far. In their previous game against Bangladesh, the Proteas could only manage 113 runs after batting first. Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller were among the runs as they took their side from 23 for 4 and added 79 runs for the 5th wicket. With the ball, the bowling unit continued their fine form and kept Bangladesh to 109, winning by 4 runs in the end. Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, and Anrich Nortje were among the wickets. South Africa will hope to keep the winning momentum and make it four out of four from the group stage.

…MATCHDAY…

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024, currently underway, has witnessed a trend of low-scoring humdingers so far. As the tournament progresses and the USA leg concludes, the caravan now shifts completely to the Caribbean. Match number 31 of Group D features the mighty Proteas taking on the emerging side of Nepal. With their spot in the Super 8s already booked, the Proteas are using this clash against Nepal as an opportunity to iron out any wrinkles in their game and sharpen their skills in certain domains, rather than solely concentrating on the outcome of this particular fixture. While the South African batting unit has grappled with difficulties during the league phase, grinding out hard-fought victories in tightly contested matches, evidently the way they huffed and puffed to chase the target against the Dutch, the remarkable fact is their ability to overcome obstacles and emerge victorious. The top order needs more consistency, with key players like the vastly experienced Quinton de Kock, along with Reeza Hendricks, and skipper Aiden Markram struggling to contribute substantial scores, leaving them due for significant innings. However, the team has found solace in the form of their heavyweight match-winners, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, whose contributions have rescued the Proteas from crunch situations. Tristan Stubbs who was in fine form, also aims to find his nick. The South African bowling unit has been a rock-solid force, consistently troubling opposition batters throughout the tournament. Notably, Anrich Nortje has rediscovered his rhythm and has been in scintillating form, emerging as the second-highest wicket-taker in the competition so far, with eight scalps to his name. Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Ottneil Baartman have provided stellar support as well, forming a potent pace quartet that has functioned as a complete, well-oiled bowling unit. Meanwhile, Keshav Maharaj, the sole spinner, has been economical in his spells, tying down the batters and denying them the freedom to score freely. Overall, South Africa’s sole aim will be to improve their batting performance by being more consistent. Nepal's campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024 has been plagued with challenges from the outset. They endured a demoralizing defeat at the hands of the Netherlands in their opening encounter. Their hopes of bouncing back were further dampened when their second fixture against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain. Now, with two bigger challenges looming ahead for the boys from the subcontinent, they have a lot to correct, pick up the pieces, and also regroup as a unit to revive their campaign. Having had limited opportunities to showcase their prowess in this World Cup, Nepal's batting lineup finds itself heavily reliant on their in-form captain, Rohit Paudel, who has shouldered the bulk of the scoring responsibilities thus far. the team's chances of posing a serious challenge hinge on the ability of other key players like Aasif Sheikh, Kushal Bhurtel, and the all-rounders, including Dipendra Singh Airee, to raise their game. Nepal has demonstrated that they are not a side to be underestimated, possessing the requisite talent to trouble any opposition, with a fair share of experienced players. Nepal's bowling attack will heavily rely on the proven abilities of Gulshan Jha, Karan KC, and Abinash Bohara to lead the charge. The way South African batters have been exposed against variable pace and bounce, hence, these experienced campaigners will be entrusted with the responsibility of spearheading the bowling unit, aiming to trouble the opposition batters. The Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St. Vincent, sets the stage for this intriguing clash between the formidable South Africa, and the determined underdogs, Nepal. Will Nepal's spirited outfit manage to unsettle the formidable Proteas, or will South Africa's formidable brigade maintain their winning momentum? Who do you think will dominate in this clash?
