Right then, that is it from this one-sided affair and the group stages as well. Next up in the World Cup is the Super-8 stages. In the first match, it will be the co-hosts, USA taking on South Africa on 19th June, Wednesday. That will begin at 8 pm IST (2.30 pm GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Rovman Powell, the victorious skipper of West Indies says that it feels very good to finish unbeaten. Says the hard work they have been putting in for the last year or so is paying off. Adds that the guys are always excited to play in the Caribbean and St. Lucia is one of the best batting surfaces in the tournament. He appreciates Pooran saying that he has worked very hard and he set a solid foundation for them in the game. Adds that they started the tournament with a little advantage of the home conditions. Mentions that when he started his journey as the captain, they were ranked 8th and now they are 3rd in the world. Says the support has been incredible wherever they have gone. Also thanks his head coach, Darren Sammy for being the driving force in his journey as the skipper.

Rashid Khan, the captain of Afghanistan says that West Indies batted really well in the Powerplay and it is hard to come back when you conceded 90 runs in the first six overs. Adds that they still bowled well in the middle overs to restrict them under 220 considering the start they got. Mentions that it is important how they execute their plans with the ball and they will take a lot of learnings from this game. Says that it is good that it has happened at this stage of the tournament and it will help them understand how to play in the upcoming matches. Further adds that the strong breeze was a factor and as a bowler, you need to consider which side to bowl and keep the overs under 10 runs. Ends by saying that, they still had a lot of positives from this match.

Nicholas Pooran is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his scintillating knock of 98. He begins by saying that you don't want to get run out after being on 97 but says in the end, you need to take your team to a good total. Says they assessed the conditions properly and he felt that it was his day and just made it big. Says in T20 cricket everyone wants to see fours and sixes but states it is not that easy to get it done in each and every game. Ends by saying that they have been really consistent not only in this World Cup, but in the last 13-14 months and also climbed to the 3rd spot in the ICC rankings. Ends up appreciating Sherfane Rutherford and says that his knock in the last game really inspired them.

Presentation Time...

Earlier in the game, West Indies post a record-breaking total on the board courtesy of a swash-buckling 98 from Nicholas Pooran along with some quick-fire knocks from Johnson Charles, Shai Hope, and Rovman Powell. Afghanistan were pretty ordinary with the ball and they wouldn't have hoped for a performance like this just before the Super 8s. Gulbadin Naib was the pick of the bowlers with a couple of wickets while Noor Ahmad was economical as well. Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai chipped in with one each but were very expensive while Rashid Khan also had an off day in this game. While chasing, the Afghans were never really in it and in the end fell short by 104 runs.

West Indies, on the other hand, were brilliant with the ball right from the start. Akeal Hosein once again got an early breakthrough and set the tone for them. The Afghans built up a little partnership that was broken by Gudakesh Motie. Obed McCoy was excellent as well who played his first match of the World Cup and picked up three wickets including two in the same over. Hosein added one more to his tally while Alzarri Joseph also got one. It was just a matter of time before it was Andre Russell who wrapped things up for the Windies.

Afghanistan were rocked early when Rahmanullah Gurbaz fell for a duck in the very first over. Ibrahim Zadran took the initiative and played a few lusty blows but was dismissed at the wrong time for them. After that, except for Azmatullah Omarzai no one really could make any sort of impact, and they suffered a huge collapse in the middle which has been a concern for them for a long time now. Rashid Khan did score a few boundaries towards the end, but to be honest we all knew that was never going to be enough here.

WEST INDIES THRASHES AFGHANISTAN IN ST. LUCIA! Darren Sammy will be a proud coach to see his team perform like this in his own stadium. It was really a demolition job from the Windies and the crowd here has been thoroughly entertained. Even though this result does not affect Afghanistan, they would have hoped to put on a strong challenge to the home team.

OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! DONE AND DUSTED! A real Caribbean flare! West Indies win in style by a mammoth margin of 104 runs! 8 wins on the trot and the longest winning streak in the T20Is for the Men In Maroon. Fuller-length delivery, in the slot and there to be hit. Rashid Khan clears his front foot to open up the off side and hoist it over and across the line, but slices and swirls it up high in the night sky. West Indian skipper, Rovman Powell from long off runs ahead towards the mid off region and settles underneath it, keeping his eyes on the ball till end, and takes a good catch. West Indies maintain a clean sheet and wrap up the group stage as the table toppers, with four back-to-back commanding victories.

Commentary

We are back for the all-important run chase! The two Umpires have made their way out to the middle. Rovman Powell marches his troops into the field and the West Indian players are taking their respective fielding positions. Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the explosive right-handed duo are the two openers for Afghanistan. And as usual, Akeal Hosein will be opening the bowling attack for the Windies. And, here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, the West Indies have amassed 218 on the board and Afghanistan has a steep slope to climb. A lot will depend on how the Afghanistan openers initiate the innings as they have the requisite firepower in their arsenal. West Indies will be aiming to take early wickets and exert pressure early on. Stay tuned as Afghanistan's reply with the bat is up next shortly.

The Afghan bowlers were just getting smoked right from the get-go. Dot balls were like unicorns out there, hardly any to be seen. Azmatullah Omarzai did pick up Brandon King's wicket early, but that was literally the only thing that went right for their bowling in the Powerplay. None of the other bowlers could put a lid on the run-scoring. And to make matters even worse for them, Azmatullah himself got absolutely carted for 36 runs in his second over which just completely opened the floodgates and really put a dent in their whole bowling attack. Further adding to the woes, Mohammad Nabi shelled a crucial catch of Charles but Naveen Ul Haq got the better of him in that very over. However, Noor Ahmed and Rashid Khan were able to settle things down a bit in the middle overs. With the spinners getting some grip, and the pressure they created with their turn helped, and it allowed Gulbadin Naib to finally strike and get a much-needed wicket for them. The bowlers then focused on taking the pace off the ball, which prevented the batters from playing freely like they did earlier. However, Rashid Khan conceded 24 off his last over which again robbed the momentum from them. Gulbadin came back for the penultimate over and dismissed the dangerous Powell. But Afghanistan literally leaked runs by conceding 70 runs in the last 5 overs and were quite sloppy in the field as well.

West Indies have just notched up the highest first innings total in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, 2024, and this is their highest total in the T20 World Cups. But boy, oh boy! Aren't you entertained? A sheer box-office at St. Lucia! The West Indies came out swinging hard right from the start! Johnson Charles and Nicholas Pooran went bonkers on the Afghan bowlers, despite losing Brandon King super early. Johnson Charles had a bit of a scratchy and an edgy start, but he still found a way to keep finding the ropes. When Nicholas Pooran walked in, he just started tonking the bowlers into the stands, where every shot was a clean strike into the crowd. These two kept piling on the boundaries and capitalizing on that Powerplay. By the end of it, they had racked up 92 runs, the highest ever Powerplay score in T20 World Cup history, decimating the opposition bowling attack. Charles departed on 43 but ensured his team got off to a flier. Things slowed down a bit around the halfway mark as Pooran and Hope focused on singles and carefully handled the spinners. They built a 33-run partnership before Hope got out for 25. Nicholas Pooran who got off to a blitz, notched up a brilliant half-century. The run rate still kept hovering around 10s. The skipper Rovman Powell, who was in search of runs, then provided a solid hand of 26 runs. Nicholas Pooran then said 'enough', going all guns blazing against Rashid, and opened the floodgates in the 18th over fetching 24 runs. His inning was graced by 8 towering sixes but unfortunately, he missed his ton by a shade 2 runs. West Indies finished up at 218 in the end.

OUT! RUN OUT! Oh..no! That is just unlucky for Nicholas Pooran! This is another full toss, on off, Nicholas Pooran drills it wide of deep point and turns around for the second run to keep the strike, Azmatullah Omarzai picks up and fires in a rocket throw towards the batter's end and hits bullseye, Pooran puts in a desperate dive but that is not good enough to save him. Nicky P has to go back for a smashing 98 and just misses out on a well-deserved ton.

19.30

A good wide yorker now, outside off, Nicholas Pooran goes down across to swipe it away but fails to connect this time. He remains on 97 for now.

19.26

SIX MORE! This is a freebie! A juicy full toss, on off, Nicholas Pooran moves across a bit and absolutely whacks it over the deep mid-wicket fence for another maximum.

19.16

SIX! SMASHED! Naveen-ul-Haq misses the yorker and serves this in the slot, on off, Nicholas Pooran clears his front leg away and dispatches it well over the long off fence for a biggie. He moves into the 90s now! Also, he completes 2000 runs in his illustrious T20I career.

He takes pace off again, full and on off, Rovman Powell once again tries to slog across the line, but is early through his shot and gets an outside edge, the ball goes in the air, Nangeyalia Kharote (Sub) at cover-point settles under it and takes a good catch. West Indies four down now!

Slower one, full and on off, Rovman Powell tries to go for the slog again but misses it this time.

18.16

SIX! Rovman Powell joins the party! Gulbadin Naib bowls a low full toss, on middle, the Windies' skipper stays deep in his crease and tonks it over the bowler's head for yet another maximum.

West Indies have taken 45 runs of Rashid's four overs which is not easy to do at all!

17.52

Quicker, full and on middle, Nicholas Pooran swipes it wide of deep mid-wicket for a brace.

17.46

SIX! Nicky P on fire here! Rashid Khan drags his length back, on middle, Nicholas Pooran rocks back and smashes it over the long on fence for another maximum. The 50-runs partnership comes up with that as well.

17.34

FOUR! Just wide! A bit short and on middle, Nicholas Pooran stays back and heaves it away towards the deep mid-wicket fence, the fielder runs to his right but only to watch the ball go past him for a boundary.

The highest wicket-taker in the tournament so far, Fazalhaq Farooqi has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

We are moments away from the start of the last group stage game of this World Cup but before that, the players from both sides make their way out to the middle and line up for their respective national anthems. It will be Afghanistan's first followed by the national anthem of West Indies.

PITCH REPORT - Natalie Germanos is at the pitchside. She says there's a decent wind blowing across the ground, and also informs about the dimensions of the ground. Says it is 77 meters hit down the ground, and the two square boundaries are 63 meters and 72 meters respectively. Informs that pitch number 2 is being used for this clash. Matthew Hayden joins her and says that it looks like a fantastic wicket as there's a nice covering of grass on it and it will definitely have a good bounce and carry. Tells there are some cracks as well but they are not moving much and reckons it should benefit the pacers. Ends up by saying that the wind will be a crucial factor in hitting big shots.

Rovman Powell, the captain of West Indies says that there is more to gain than lose here. Adds that it is an opportunity to build up more confidence and do well in all three departments. Informs that they have made a couple of changes. Says that Romario Shepherd has welcomed his second child and as a team they know that family holds a lot of importance. Ends by saying that Obed McCoy comes in for him while Shai Hope replaces Roston Chase.

Afghanistan's skipper Rashid Khan wins the toss and elects to bowl first. He says that it's just about making sure how they go about in the chase. States that they have adjusted quickly with the conditions and have also seen a couple of games at this venue where the wicket has been bouncy. Adds most of the boys have played in the CPL which will help a lot. Tells that the Toss is not a big advantage and it is more about playing the right brand of cricket and taking positive decisions. Informs they are going with the same team.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King, Johnson Charles, Nicholas Pooran (WK), Shai Hope (In place of Roston Chase), Rovman Powell (C), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Obed McCoy (In place of Romario Shepherd).

Afghanistan (Unchanged Playing XI) - Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Ibrahim Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Karim Janat, Rashid Khan (C), Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

TOSS - Rashid Khan calls it right and Afghanistan have elected to BOWL first.

The hosts, West Indies, too, have enjoyed an undefeated run and their challenge against Afghanistan ain't going to be a cakewalk. Nonetheless, the home side has leveraged their knowledge of the local conditions to their advantage, putting them in a slightly stronger position. The Windies' batting prowess has never been a cause for concern, especially in this format which they have dominated over the years. The ever-reliable Nicholas Pooran will be the pivotal batter as always, while Brandon King and Johnson Charles will aim to contribute valuable runs as well. The emerging talent, Sherfane Rutherford who went bonkers in the previous game with the bat against the Kiwis, is another player to watch out for, and Andre Russell is always a threat for any bowling attack when he gets going. Boasting a potent blend of power-hitting aggressive all-rounders, the balanced West Indies side will rely on their bowling attack, with Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein, and Gudakesh Motie striving to maintain their impressive form. This clash is between the batting powerhouse of the West Indies versus the formidable bowling attack of Afghanistan, and both teams are pumped up to finish on a high. Stay tuned as the toss and the team updates are up next shortly.

Afghanistan has been one of the unbeaten teams in the competition, winning three on the trot by decimating Uganda first, then crushing the Kiwis and dominating PNG with relative ease. The Afghan batting lineup has been the driving force behind their success, outperforming every bowling attack they have encountered. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, in particular, has been in scintillating form, standing out as the leading run-scorer of the competition so far. His exceptional batting prowess has played a pivotal role in Afghanistan's triumphant run. He is very well complemented by others including Ibrahim Zadran and Gulbadin Naib. Veteran Mohammad Nabi has also executed his role pretty well by contributing decently as an all-rounder. While spin has traditionally been Afghanistan's forte, with Rashid Khan not at his best, other bowlers have risen to the occasion. Fazalhaq Farooqi has been the standout, tormenting batters and topping the wicket-taking chart. Noor Ahmad has impressed with his crafty economical spells, while Naveen-ul-Haq has supported the pace attack admirably. However, the Windies present a sterner test and the Afghan lads will be aiming to step into the Super 8s with a winning momentum.

Hello and a very warm welcome to everyone joining us for the coverage of the final group stage game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. All eight teams have qualified for the next round of this tournament, the Super 8s. Match number 40 features the two heavyweights from Group C, where Afghanistan is set to go up against the formidable hosts, West Indies at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St. Lucia. Both teams have advanced to the Super 8s and this clash is all about compounding on the positives and a battle to finish as the table-toppers of the group.

... MATCH DAY ...

The group stage of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup is set to culminate with a top-of-the-table clash in Group C between the West Indies and Afghanistan at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia. Both teams, unbeaten and having already secured their progression to the next round, will face off to fine-tune their strategies before the Super 8s. For the two-time champions, the West Indies, the journey has been mostly smooth, with their few stumbles occurring in their batting lineup. Despite Rovman Powell's lack of form, contributions from Johnson Charles, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford and Andre Russell have kept the team afloat. The bowling unit has been a collective effort led by Alzarri Joseph and supported by spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, along with contributions from Andre Russell and Romario Shepherd. Afghanistan, on the other hand, have continued where they left off in the last global event in India and have shown that they have what it takes to go all the way. The opening pair of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran has been particularly effective, with Gurbaz leading the charge. Concerns about the rest of the batting unit were alleviated when Gulbadin Naib, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Mohammad Nabi spent crucial time in the middle during their chase against Papua New Guinea. With Mujeeb Ur Rahman ruled out due to an injury to his right index finger, Afghanistan chose not to go for a like-for-like replacement. Instead, they opted to strengthen their batting by adding Hazratullah Zazai as a replacement. On the bowling front, Fazalhaq Farooqi has been outstanding, leading the wicket-takers list for Afghanistan with 12 wickets.
