Commentary

Right then! West Indies go up in the series after winning the Opening game here. The series moves onto its next game to be played on the 2nd of November and it starts at 1.30 pm GMT. Join us a bit early for the game as we bring you all the pre match excitement. Till then, have a great day!

Shai Hope, the captain of West Indies says that the opening bowlers set the tone and they strive for early wickets and is happy with what they did today. Adds that they were much more consistent with their lines and lengths in this game and would want to be consistent going forward as well. Adds that Evin Lewis has been around for some time and he is hungry to get those runs and it was great to see him great a start.

England captain Liam Livingstone reflects on the game, emphasizing the importance of building a solid score in ODI cricket, particularly from a top-six batter going big. He acknowledges that while 50 overs offer ample time to set a competitive total, West Indies’ bowlers made that difficult today. Livingstone credits them for their effective performance and highlights Turner as a significant force, calling him a game-changer whose impact was clear to everyone watching.

Gudakesh Motie is the Player of the Match for his four-wicket haul. He starts by saying that the conditions were different in Sri Lanka as it was spinning more there and here it was pretty less. Adds that he tried to bowl a straight line and keep it simple. Mentions that the bowling from the other end was tight as well which helped him get those four wickets and he had a practice session yesterday where he looked to slow the pace down and it worked.

... TIME FOR PRESENTATIONS ...

Rain caused a delay, but once play resumed without any overs lost, West Indies’ chase was clinical. Openers Evin Lewis and Brandon King started cautiously, adapting to the wicket before Lewis unleashed his firepower. He hammered the English bowlers all over the ground in a blistering 94 off 69 balls, setting up a solid foundation for a comfortable West Indies win. The rain interrupted once again, cutting the game short to 35 overs with a revised target of 157 runs for West Indies. Both the openers went back into the hut and it was the pair of Shai Hope and Keacy Carty to bring the game home.

England’s middle order showed some resistance, with Liam Livingstone (48 off 49) and Sam Curran (37 off 56) building a 72-run partnership that gave their side a fighting chance. However, Gudakesh Motie’s spell turned the game on its head. With remarkable precision and spin, Motie dismantled the English lineup, claiming four crucial wickets, including those of Livingstone and Curran. His 4/41 from 10 overs made him the standout bowler as England was ultimately bowled out for 209.

West Indies have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series after a commanding eight-wicket victory over England in a rain-affected encounter. Winning the toss, the West Indies elected to bowl on a tricky pitch, a decision that proved fruitful. England’s openers, Phil Salt and Will Jacks, managed a steady 39-run opening stand but were soon dismissed by Jayden Seales. Following this, Jordan Cox and Jacob Bethell added 40 runs for the third wicket, before Matthew Forde’s return to the attack disrupted the momentum, dismissing both set batters and leaving England struggling at 93/4.

Commentary

We are finally all set for the run chase to get underway! The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of England. It will be the new opening pair of Evin Lewis and Brandon King who will start the innings for West Indies. Jofra Archer has the new ball in hand and is ready to steam in. Let's play...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

UPDATE - 10.39 pm GMT - It looks like the clean-up process is still going on in Antugua but the positive thing is that the rain seems to have disappeared completely. We do have official word on the resumption as well now according to a few sources. The chase will begin at 11 pm GMT with no overs lost which is great news. So, grab a cup of coffee and strap yourselves in as cricketing action isn't far away.

UPDATE - 10.08 pm GMT - There is some good news from the ground and it seems that the rain has succumbed to a light drizzle and there is a lot of commotion around the covers. The outfield sure is damp but we might see the covers come off soon as the groundstaff try and speed things up. Stay tuned for the latest updates.

UPDATE - 9.17 pm GMT - The latest update from Antigua is that there is still rain around and there might be a few puddles forming on the outfield as well. The broadcasters are live but there's not much of a word from what is actually going on with the weather and the playing conditions. There's still plenty time in the match, so, let's hope that we get a full second half as well. Stay tuned for more updates.

Right then, 210 is what West Indies need to get the win and start off the home series on a high. It shouldn't be a big ask given England have a fairly inexperienced bowling line up as well. However, currently, the covers are on as there is a drizzle on the ground. It has been overcast the whole time and finally, we see a bit of rain. Hopefully, it clears out soon and the chas can get underway on time. Stick around for the latest updates.

Jayden Seales is down for a chat. He expresses satisfaction with his performance, noting how he overcame the frustrations of a challenging series in Sri Lanka. He reflects on how rushing his delivery affected his results there but shares that slowing down in practice has helped him regain his rhythm. Confidently, he adds that he believes the target set is chasable.

The wicket was a bit on the slower side and England had an inexperienced line up but surely, they could have done better than 209. The openers were a bit shaky and got out trying to up the ante and then the two young chaps in the form of Jordan Cox and Jacob Bethell couldn't make full use of a tidy start. The partnership between skipper Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran was crucial and at one point, England looked to be in the ascendancy but a soft dismissal for Liam on 48 runs meant the Windies managed to break into the lower middle order. Curran played a tidy knock as well but couldn't stay on for too long and they folded like a pack of cards.

West Indies played five frontline bowlers and they did have a couple of part-timers to back them up but weren't required. Jayden Seales showed excellent control in the first Powerplay and after a bit of pressing, he got both English openers back in the hut and then Matthew Forde picked up a couple of wickets as well after which, the spinners bossed the middle phase as well. Roston Chase bowled really well without any reward but the other spinner, Gudakesh Motie ran through the middle order has he bagged four wickets. Alzarri Joseph and Matthew Forde then cleaned things up with a wicket each in the last Powerplay and kept England down under 210 runs.

An excellent showing from the bowlers has backed skipper Shai Hope's call to bowl first and West Indies will be very pleased at the interval. Not the score on board England would have wanted and are really up against it in the second half but at least, they have something to defend.

45.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! England are bundled out for 209 runs and West Indies will be a happy camp of the two at the moment! Alzarri Joseph gets his second wicket as he runs in from over the wicket and bowls the delivery on a good length on top of the stumps with pace. Adil Rashid moves away and looks to slog the ball but hits it straight to Matthew Forde at mid on who takes a comfortable reverse cup. Adil Rashid makes 15 (19) and England are all out for 209 run.

OUT! CAUGHT! Alzarri Joseph gets the short ball just right this time and Jofra Archer is a goner. Joseph steams in and bangs another short ball into the deck, this time around off and middle and right on the money. Archer hangs back and looks to take it on but gets hurried and gets a top edge that goes straight up towards the keeper. Shai Hope has to barely move an inch and just settles under it to take it easily.

A bit slower again and on a good length around off, Adil Rashid jams the bat down and blocks it towards cover.

42.40

Slower one, just outside off, Adil Rashid tries to guide it towards deep third but misses by an inch. The ball dies down on it's way to the keeper.

42.30

Slower one, bowled full and in the blockhole around the pads, Adil Rashid blocks it down the pitch.

42.24

FOUR! Nicely done! Pitched up around middle and angling back in, Adil Rashid brings the wrists nicely into play and flicks it aerially over mid-wicket and into the huge vacant spaces in the deep for a boundary.

42.11

Short and wide, sitting up nicely for the batter, Jofra Archer stays back and cuts it firmly to deep point for just a single.

WIDE! An extra to begin with from Liam Livingstone. Bowls the leg break to the right-hander and slips it down the leg side.

With everything ready for the start, the skipper Liam Livingstone getting his fields right! Let's play!

The Players and the umpires are back on the field. Brandon King and Evin Lewis come out to bat again for West Indies after the break and Liam Livingstone will start the attack for England after the break.

We are back! The revised playing conditions are that West Indies need 76 more runs to win in 120 balls which means it is a 35-overs chase with the target being 157 runs. Each bowler can now bowl a maximum of 7 overs as well. Don't go anywhere as the resumption is around the corner.

UPDATE - 12.51 am GMT - It's been quite a while since the rain has stopped and hopefully, we get a resumption time soon as conditions have gotten better in Antigua. Also, West Indies are already 48 runs ahead of the DLS par score, so, they just need 20 overs to get completed and we now have a start time as well. The game will resume at 1.10 am GMT and we should get an update on the revised playing conditions soon. Stay tuned.

UPDATE - 12.04 am GMT - Oh no! Rain has returned in Antigua, and this time, it’s heavier. The groundsmen have quickly rushed in with the covers to protect the pitch. For those following closely, remember that at least 20 overs need to be completed for the DLS method to come into play. Fingers crossed for clearer skies so we can get back to the action soon!

Drinks break! Right then, 15 overs gone in the first innings and the umpires call for a re-hydrating break. West Indies did dominate the first 10-11 overs and got the two experienced batters up top but the young guns have now come in and shown great positivity. Alzarri Joseph hasn't been able to hit his strides and Jacob Bethell has put him off his length as well. The middle phase becomes crucial for both sides as there are runs to be scored but the Windies would like a few more wickets to slow down the progress.

We are all set! The anthems are all done and the umpires have taken their place on the pitch. West Indies team walk out to bowl first on this first ODI of the series. Will Jacks, the man to open the batting along with the explosive Phil Salt for England. Matthew Forde has the new ball in hand to start the attack for West Indies. Let's Play!

Here we go! The players of both teams walk out in lines along with the match officials for the National Anthems! For the first time, there are going to be three National Anthems. First, it's of Antigua, then England's National Anthem, and finally, of the West Indies.

PITCH REPORT - Nikhil Uttamchandani and Ian Bishop highlight key elements of the surface, noting its well-prepared look with closely cut grass and a smooth roll. The square boundaries measure just 63 and 62 meters, with a larger 74-meter boundary down the ground. They also mention strong winds from the East and the recent trend of successful chases on this ground, as the last five games have been won by the side batting second. Bishop and Uttamchandani estimate the pitch should support a score of 260 or more if batting first.

Liam Livingstone, England's newest and 38th ODI captain says that they would have bowled first as well but hopes that it will slow down later on. Adds that leading the national team is exciting and the boys are excited to get going as well. Goes on to inform that they have gone with five pacers and three spinners with as many as four debutants.

Shai Hope, the captain of West Indies wins the toss and elects to bowl saying that the over head clouds can help the fast bowlers and the conditions will improve for batting ahead. He further adds that they have made one change in the team that played last against Sri Lanka as Shimron Hetmyer comes back into the side. He finishes by talking about the team feeling good and confident for the games to come and are looking forward to having a successful series.

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt (WK), Will Jacks, Jordan Cox (On ODI debut), Jacob Bethell, Liam Livingstone (C), Sam Curran, Dan Mousley (On debut), Jamie Overton (On ODI debut), Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, John Turner (On debut).

West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope (C/WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Keacy Carty, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Gudakesh Motie, Matthew Forde, Jayden Seales, Alzarri Joseph.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in favor of West Indies and they have opted to BOWL first.

Right then, the stage is set for a pulsating encounter which could be the beginning of a cracking series as well. Stick around as the toss and team sheets aren't far away.

Talking about England, they have caught this series right in between a couple of away Test series and this allows a few of the fringe players to take centre stage. Liam Livingstone will be leading the side that might end up fielding as many as five debutants in the ODI series.

West Indies are back from Sri Lanka and are gearing up to welcome cross-Atlantic foes in England. Having lost both white-ball series' in Lanka, they will be looking to get some confidence back against an inexperienced English side.

Hello and a warm welcome to the 1st ODI between West Indies and England at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in NorthSound, Antigua. It is a hefty white-ball tour with 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is to follow and it should be filled with exciting action.
