Commentary

Right then, the first game of this long T20I series is done and dusted and it's advantage England early on, especially with the manner of this win but there's a long way to go. The next game will be played at the same venue and less than 24 hours later on Sunday, 10 November at 8 pm GMT. You can join us a lot sooner though for the build-up to that game. Cheers!

The captain of England, Jos Buttler says that it was a fantastic performance and he is really delighted for the boys. Mentions that they know what to expect from West Indies and it is important that you keep taking wickets. Further says that if you allow the West Indies batters to spend time out in the middle, they can really hurt you. Appreciates Phil Salt by saying that he has taken his game to new heights and he is reaping the rewards of the work he has put in. Mentions that the wicket was a bit two-paced early on and he is glad that they could strike early with the ball in the Powerplay. Ends by saying that the message to the boys has been to go out there and enjoy themselves.

Rovman Powell, the captain of West Indies says that it is generally the way they play but it didn't come off tonight and yet they managed to get a decent total on board. Reckons that losing wickets in clusters is something they need to fix going forward and they still need to back themselves and play their brand of cricket. Adds that it is about the guys working on their individual skills with the ball and applauds Akeal Hosein for his tight bowling. Ends by appreciating the crowd as well.

Phil Salt is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his stunning ton. He says that he enjoys batting here and has grown up playing on these surfaces. Mentions that it is important to adjust quickly to meet the demands of the tempo of T20 cricket. Shares that opening and closing of the grip have helped access different areas of the field. Lauds Jacob Bethell by saying he is a huge talent and hopes he continues to do well for England.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, the returning English skipper, Jos Buttler opted to bowl first as there was moisture on the deck and Saqib Mahmood backed him up with a quick three-wicket burst early on. West Indies did counter through Nicholas Pooran but it was the lower order that did most of the damage as Russell, Shepherd and Motie all made scores of 30 plus and took the hosts to a fairly substantial total. Saqib ended up with a four-fer as Adil Rashid picked up 3 wickets as well. In reply, Phil Salt ran the show with the bat and we also saw the greatness of a rising star in the form of Jacob Bethell. However, both sides seem to have lost a player to injury as Reece Topley frustratingly left the field early in the game and then Andre Russell was seen hobbling back to the dressing room as well late in the game. Hopefully, both of them are fit for the next encounter.

West Indies had the runs on the board and would have been decently happy at the halfway stage but England's batting in the Powerplay just blew them away. The hosts conceded 73 runs in the first 6 overs and picked up one wicket which did become two in the very next over but that was it. They just couldn't handle the heat from Salt and Bethell and succumbed to a hefty defeat.

Phil Salt's love affair with the Kensington Oval continues and on a ground where he spent a lot of his younger years, he has yet again put on a stellar performance with the bat, notching up his 3rd T20I ton as well. He was amply supported by young and feisty Jacob Bethell who too has a connection to this venue and Bethell picked up a half-century as well. The pair added 107 runs for the 3rd wicket in just 61 balls and completely hammered the opposition bowlers en route to victory.

The highest-ever successful run chase in a T20I game at the Kensington Oval! A resounding victory for England to kick off the five-match T20I series and if game 1 is anything to go by, we are in for a treat all throughout the series.

16.52

There it is, Jacob Bethell with the winning runs! England complete a dominant chase! Coming to the delivery, this is banged into the deck, on middle and leg, Jacob Bethell rises with the bounce and pulls it firmly to the right of deep square leg and comes back comfortably for the second run. England win by 8 wickets with 3 overs to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series!

16.46

SIX! WOW! That is a shot of real authority! Angling across the batter, on a length, Jacob Bethell stays low to make the connection and stays leg side of the ball. Thumps it as he goes inside out over cover and picks up a six. The 100-run stand comes up between these two batters. England are just 2 runs away now.

16.30

This is on a short of a length, slower and on middle, Jacob Bethell swivels for the pull but fails to connect and wears it on the body.

16.21

On a back of a length, on off, Salt slaps it down the ground to long off for a single.

16.14

HUNDRED FOR SALT! A knock of the highest order from Salt. Third T20I hundred of his career and all of them have come against West Indies. Romario Shepherd goes searching for the yorker but ends up serving a low full toss, on middle, Salt drills it down to long on where Rovman Powell gets around to his left and tumbles but lets it get past him and it trickles into the fence. Salt sets off on a celebratory run, takes the helmet off and soaks in the applause from the crowd and his teammates.

Full and on the pads, flicked through mid-wicket for a couple of runs. Moves to 98 does Salt.

15.41

MAIDEN T20I FIFTY FOR BETHELL! And what a special moment to achieve it here in Barbados, where he spent the first 14 years of his life. Joseph bowls a nagging length delivery on middle, and Bethell sits deep in his crease, attempting a big heave across the line. He skies it high, but the ball drops safely in front of an incoming Shimron Hetmyer at deep mid-wicket.

15.36

SIX! Massive hit! Off-pace delivery but a bit too straight and not short enough to trouble the batter. Jacob Bethell stays put and just helps it over the deep fine leg fence for a biggie.

15.21

Fuller in length and this skids through, on off, Salt creams the drive to deep cover. Moves to 95 with this single.

15.21wd

WIDE! Tries to keep it away from the reach of the batter but spills it beyond the tramline on off, on a back of a length. Salt reaches out but fails to get any bat on it.

A bit comical that from Rovman Powell and the batters get three runs whereas it should have been a dot. Full and angled across off, Bethell squeezes it off the outer half of the bat to short third where Powell casually lets the ball through and chases it down but while picking it up, the ball gets knocked further ahead by his left boot and he has to dive in to save the boundary.

14.50

Floated up on the pads, flicked away straight to square leg.

14.41

Tossed up full and around off, pushed away down to long off for another single by Salt.

14.31

Fractionally short again and bowled into the batter, tucked away through mid-wicket for a single by Bethell.

14.22

Flatter trajectory, bowled short on off, Bethell rocks back and punches it across in between long on and deep mid-wicket, picking up a couple of runs.

The ball is going to be changed now. The selection has been made from the box of balls and we are all good to go now.

14.14

FOUR! Jacob Bethell keeps throwing caution to the wind and picks up another boundary. Darted across wide of the off stump, Bethell sits down and slashes the ball off the outer half of the blade in between point and short third for a boundary.

Change of ball? The two umpires get together to inspect the ball and seem to be happy with the condition of it for now.

Commentary

Welcome back for the chase. West Indies are in a huddle near the ropes before making their way out to the centre. It will be Will Jacks and Phil Salt to open the innings for England. West Indies are starting with spin in the form of Akeal Hosein. Let's play!

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, West Indies will be delighted to get to 182 considering the start they had and the position they found themselves in with 5 overs remaining in the innings. Only once has a 170-plus score been chased at this venue and it will be a record chase at this ground, if England pull it off. As the West Indies' innings progressed, the batting seemed to become a bit easier with the ball sliding onto the bat nicely under the lights and England will hope that is indeed the case. Back in a bit for the chase.

Adil Rashid is down for a quick chat. He says that they as a team bowled pretty well. Mentions that West Indies had a small partnership towards the end other than it was a good effort. On being asked about the chase, he says that he backs his batters to knock off the runs. Talking about the bowling he says, some days on the same wicket things work and some days they don't, so you have to play cat and mouse every time you go out there. Further adds that his plans are pretty simple and he keeps mixing deliveries in between and keeps the batters guessing.

At 117/8, the West Indies were in danger of failing to bat out the whole 20 overs but that was when their batting depth came to the rescue. Gudakesh Motie made his intentions clear with two sixes from his first two balls and unleashed a real assault. Motie contributed 33 off 14 in his 49-run stand with Romario Shepherd and that could turn out to be a defining partnership in the game. Motie fell but Shepherd ensured a strong finish for his side with a couple of lusty blows in the last over.

Well, quite an eventful first half of the game. From start to finish, there was no shortage of action and even the rain delay could not disrupt the flow. West Indies have finished on a high, scoring 53 runs off the last 6 overs to end with 182 on the board. Earlier, after being inserted into bat, West Indies were rocked early as Saqib Mahmood struck thrice in the Powerplay. Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell and Andre Russell took their chances during their stays and kept the momentum going for the hosts.

Two more to end the innings! Bowled back of a length and outside off, Romario Shepherd hangs back and looks to pull but miscues it high up in the air and over the point region. The ball plugs in the outfield and they get a couple of more runs. West Indies finish with 182/9 on the board!

19.52

Gets back for the second run! Full and straight at the stumps, Shepherd clips it away through mid-wicket and picks up a brace in the deep, diving to safety as well.

19.40

Just a smidge fuller and Shepherd goes too hard at it, mistiming it towards long on. No single taken and rightly so.

19.30

Beaten! Bowled into the deck and quite a bit short outside off, Shepherd looks to get across and pull but misses.

19.26

SIX! Romario Shepherd at his devastating best! Curran goes full and wide now but Shepherd somehow manages to reach it and keeps himself from falling over before hammering it flat over deep cover for another six.

19.16

Motie ends up hitting it straight to Dan Mousley at deep mid-wicket and he makes no mistake. Motie departs for a breezy 33 of just 14 balls.

18.50

Once again, Bethell trying too much here. Flatter delivery on the pads, Bethell looks for the reverse sweep but gets hit on the body instead.

OUT! WHAT A GRAB! Gudakesh Motie, you freak! Jos Buttler goes for a golden duck! Romario Shepherd bends his back and digs it in short, on off. Jos Buttler tries to ride the bounce as he goes for the full-fledged cut shot. The ball bounces a little bit more than he expected and it flies off a thickish outside edge down to deep third. Motie is a few yards in off the ropes and he does well to run sideways to his left instead of running in. He realises that the ball is going over his head and sticks out his left hand over his head. Plucks it out of thin air and he ends up losing his footing there near the ropes but he manages to keep himself away from the boundary cushions.

6.31

In the air but safe! Floated up by Livingstone, full and on off, Andre Russell stays low to make the connection as he looks to hoist it down the ground. Slices it in the air but luckily for him, it falls safely behind cover and well away from the two converging fielders. Two runs taken.

Drinks break! England will be delighted with this start, though there will be concerns regarding Reece Topley who seems to have suffered yet another setback in his career. After opting to bowl first, the visitors have chipped away at the wickets but as long as Pooran and Russell are out there, they will not breathe easy. Despite losing five wickets, the hosts have scored at a good clip. With Pooran batting the way he is and Russell at the other end, it is set up for a captivating second half of the West Indies batting effort.

Uh, oh! Reece Topley has left the field in frustration and it looks like he is injured once again. Jamie Overton will finish his over and Topley can be seen throwing down a chair on his way to the dug out, you really feel for him. Just when he gets in good shape, a slight niggle reappears.

SIX! BOOM! What a way to restart! Full with an upright seam, on off, Rovman Powell shows the full face of the bat and thumps it cleanly over the long off fence for a six.

We are back and the umpires and the fielders are in position! Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell are all set to resume their stay at the crease and the good news is that Reece Topley is good to continue his spell with the ball. Let's go...

UPDATE - 8.45 pm GMT - Positive news coming from the ground! The game will resume at 9 pm GMT and no overs will be lost as there is a buffer of 60 minutes. The groundstaff is applying saw dust and a few other things as drying agents in one area near the boundary rope which seems to be damp. So, grab a cup of coffee and strap in as the action isn't far away.

UPDATE - 8.33 pm GMT - Well then, it seems that the rain has stopped and the groundstaff is coming back onto the field probably to remove the covers. In all likeliness, we should get a prompt resumption but there's no official word yet from the umpires. However, given the fact that there has been plenty of rain in the last 48 hours, the mopping-up work is just taking a bit longer than usual which is delaying the restart.

UPDATE - 8.25 pm GMT - Reece Topley has taken a tumble on the followthrough and is down on the ground. He seems to be in some pain and the physio is out to have a look. Hopefully, he will be fine. Thankfully, Topley is up on his feet but is trudging off the field and the rain has started to fall down hard as well. The players are going off! There is sunshine and even a rainbow behind which means this shouldn't be much of a delay. Stay tuned for more updates.

SIX! Short and punished! Topley digs it in short, around off, Powell gets on top of the bounce and drags the pull away behind square on the leg side. The power of Powell and the wind takes the ball all the way over the deep backward square leg fence for a six. Topley falls over in his followthrough and he looks to be in some serious discomfort.

OUT! TAKEN! First King and now Lewis, Mahmood has now got both West Indies openers! This is on a length, attacking the stumps, Lewis swings across the line and tries to play the pick-up shot. Ends up hitting it much straighter than he would have liked and gets no elevation whatsoever. Hits it flat towards deep square leg where Jacob Bethell runs in off the ropes and dives ahead to complete a well-judged catch.

3.11lb

A loud shout for LBW but the umpire remains unmoved! Where has this pitched? From over the wicket, it does seem that it could have pitched outside leg. On a good length, on middle and leg, Pooran gets down on a knee for the slog across the line. Gets beaten on the inside edge. The ball brushes his front pad and goes on to hit him on the crouched back leg. All in readiness for the start of the game! The umpires are in position and the English players are spreading out on the field. It will be the pair of Evin Lewis and Brandon King to open the innings for West Indies. Reece Topley will take the new ball and he is raring to go. Let's play...

Phil Salt is also in for a flash interview. Starts by saying that he has some happy memories growing up here in Barbados and has watched a lot of games at this venue. Mentions that he is happy with his approach during the ODI series where he adjusted naturally to the requirements of the ODI cricket.  Feels that even though West Indies won the series, there were quite a lot of positives for them as a group.

Nicholas Pooran is in for a chat. He says that it was good to get a bit of rest and he is happy to have been able to spend the time with the family. Shares that he took part in a batting camp back home in Trinidad. Tells that as a group, they want to be the number 1 team in the world and feels that they are on the right path. Reckons that knowing the important moments in a game and switching on during those moments is crucial.

PITCH REPORT - Nikhil Uttamchandani is near the deck. Starts by saying that it is the same pitch that was used in the 3rd ODI and there is a short boundary on one side of the square with a nice breeze blowing as well. Ian Bishop says that there was torrential rain last night and there will be moisture and there's no live grass on the deck either and batters need to be careful hitting into the wind.

Rovman Powell, the captain of West Indies says that whatever you do first, you need to do it well but would have bowled first as well. Adds that it is about beating teams in a bilateral series building up to the big tournaments. Informs that it is a classic West Indies team and Shimron Hetmyer will bat at number 4.

The captain of England, Jos Buttler says that they will bowl first. Feels that knowing what the score is could be an advantage and reckons there could be some moisture. Tells that he is really excited to get back and play some cricket. Informs that Jofra Archer misses out. Adds that Jamie Overton, Reece Topley and Saqib Mahmood are the ones featuring in the bowling department. On handing over the keeping gloves to Phil Salt, he says that it will give him a different viewpoint and allow him to focus on the batting and the captaincy. Mentions that it is an exciting opportunity to play against a fantastic West Indies side and it should be fun.

England (Playing XI) - Phil Salt (WK), Will Jacks, Jos Buttler (C), Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Sam Curran, Dan Mousley (On debut), Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood, Reece Topley.

West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Nicholas Pooran (WK), Rovman Powell (C), Sherfane Rutherford, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph.

TOSS - The flip of the coin lands in favor of England and they will BOWL first.

Under the leadership of Jos Buttler, England boast a lineup brimming with power hitters and match-winners. Buttler himself is known for his ability to anchor or accelerate the innings with his aggressive batting, while Liam Livingstone’s sheer power in the middle overs makes him a significant threat. With the likes of Jofra Archer and Sam Curran in their ranks, England's depth and experience make them a formidable force in T20 cricket. Stay tuned for the all-important toss followed by the team news, all in just a few minutes' time!

The West Indies come into this series full of confidence, having delivered some commendable performances during the ODI leg. The likes of Nicholas Pooran and the ever-dangerous Shimron Hetmyer will be key players in the middle order. Hetmyer, especially, has been in scintillating form, and his power hitting will be pivotal in taking on England’s bowlers. Adding firepower to their lineup is Andre Russell, the explosive all-rounder whose ability to change a match with both bat and ball makes him one of the most feared T20 specialists in the game.

Hello and welcome to what promises to be an exhilarating first T20I between England and the West Indies at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown! After completing a thrilling ODI series where the hosts triumphed 2-1, both teams now turn their attention to the fast-paced world of T20I cricket through this five-match series.

... MATCH DAY ...

England's white-ball tour of West Indies continues and after the three-match ODI series it is time for an exciting five-match T20I series. The first two matches will take place at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados before the caravan shifts to Gros Islet for the remaining three games. Hosts West Indies scripted a fine series win against England in the ODI series, bossing the 1st and 3rd game as skipper Shai Hope led from the front but we will now see a few changes in personnel as Windies gear up for their favorite format and will be eyeing another series win. England on the other hand haven't had a great time in red-ball cricket or white-ball cricket in the last month or so and the 2019 ODI World Cup winners have really lost their mojo in the 50-overs format but the T20I format is where they do shine and will be hoping for a turnaround in fortune. Let's now talk about teams starting with the hosts and West Indies have named their squad for the first two games which will be played in Bridgetown. Rovman Powell will take charge of the T20I team once again with the likes of Nicholas Pooran and Andre Russell raring to go as well. This trio in itself is destructive enough but with Shai Hope being in pristine form and the likes of Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford all in the mix as well, the Windies do truly have a destructive batting lineup. On the bowling front, Akeal Hosein will most likely take the new place with his left-arm spin as he often does and will have the likes of Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase to help as well. Terrance Hinds in one of the fringe players who we might see get a game and it will be interesting to see how he goes with his right-arm medium pacers. As for England, the biggest positive for them is that skipper Jos Buttler returns to the squad for the first time since the T20 World Cup here in the Caribbean a fair few months ago now and he will be eyeing a winning return. It is more or less a similar set up to the ODI side that has been in the West Indies for the past couple of weeks and Liam Livingstone will certainly be key in that middle order. But this is also the format where the young guns like Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox and Dan Mousley will all look to shine as they look to forego the frustration of the ODI series loss and look forward to the future. Jofra Archer might be a bit more lethal given he doesn't have to bowl 10 overs and can really lift off in the shortest format but as usual, it will be the veteran Adil Rashid who might be a telling factor with the ball. Given the batting prowess on both sides, it is almost a no-brainer that this could end up be a run-fest but you never know, the bowlers might just have the final say when everything is lined up against them. Who are you backing to kick off the T20I series with a win?
