Commentary

Right then, that's all from this entertaining game where Chennai came out on top in their last league stage at home. On the other hand, Rajasthan will have to wait to get the 'Q' next to their name, and as it stands, Kolkata are the only team to have made it to the playoffs yet. The action on this Super Sunday continues as the second game of the day between Bengaluru and Delhi has already started. Switch tabs and join us for all the action there. Cheers!

Simarjeet Singh is the Player of the Match for his fine spell with the ball. He says that he is thankful to the management. Adds that the physio and trainer treated him well over the last year and he feels blessed. Mentions that bowling after the powerplay was a part of the plan and he and the skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, decided on the lengths to bowl after the powerplay was done. Ends by sharing that he is happy to play for Chennai.

The captain of Chennai, Ruturaj Gaikwad says that it is a wonderful feeling to get the win in the last home game of the league stage. Shares that his job was to rotate the strike and stay till the end. Feels that one or two wickets can allow the opposition to get back into the game and it was important for him to bat through. Tells that they would love to play on such wickets where their spinners get into the game. Mentions that their plan was to bowl into the pitch on this surface.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Daryl Mitchell is in for a chat. He says that it is nice to get the win on a slow track. Feels that the way they bowled in the Powerplay was exemplary. Adds that the spinners in the middle phase did a great job. Shares that the talk was about maximizing the Powerplay and it was awesome that Ruturaj Gaikwad managed to get the job done. Reckons that communicating with your partner is key and it is important to constantly adapt. Ends by saying that he feels lucky to play in front of this crowd.

Sanju Samson, the skipper of Rajasthan, says that the wicket was slow and two paced. Shares that the ball was not coming as they expected. Adds that they were targeting 170 and fell around 25 runs short. Lauds Simarjeet Singh who bowled well for Chennai. States that they were not sure about the wicket in away games so batting first made sense to them. He felt that the wicket might slow up in the second innings but it played much better. Mentions that during the day games, the wicket gets heated up but Chennai batted well. Adds that they are focussing on things in their control. Shares that things haven’t gone their way in the last three games but they are playing well and need to follow the process. Ends by saying that he is hoping for a better result in the next game.

Earlier in the day, Sanju Samson called it right and opted to put runs on the board, but Rajasthan's innings never really took off. The visitors were off to a conservative start as Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal found it hard to get the ball away in the first three overs or so. With only 42 runs in the Powerplay, both batters felt the need to get a move on and perished in their quest to do so. Riyan Parag and Sanju Samson were content with picking the ones and twos before the latter suffered the same fate as the two openers. Dropped when he was on 15, Parag held one end up for his side. Coming in at number 5, Dhruv Jurel injected some much-needed impetus into the innings. He could not bat through, but Parag did and helped Rajasthan reach 141 with an unbeaten 47-run knock. For Chennai, Simarjeet Singh was the star with the ball, exploiting the conditions perfectly to dismiss Rajasthan's top three. Tushar Deshpande played his part too, and more importantly, during the death overs, to deny Rajasthan the finishing kick they were after.

As for Rajasthan, they fought hard with the ball but just did not have enough runs on the board. Sanju Samson-led unit have suffered their third successive defeat and their campaign seems to be derailing towards the business end of the competition. That said, they continue to hold the second place in the points table but a win here in Chennai would have helped them book their place in the playoffs. Trent Boult bowled a tidy first over but could not back it up in the following over while his new ball partner, Sandeep Sharma was expensive in his first couple of overs. Ravichandran Ashwin helped them break the opening stand but they could not really build on that scalp. Ashwin, Chahal and Burger chipped away at the wickets in the middle phase but they were not able to keep the pressure on for prolonged periods and eventually ended up on the losing side.

CHENNAI RETURN HOME AND RETURN TO WINNING WAYS! With 14 points, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Co. climb to third spot in the standings and inch closer to qualifying for the playoffs. In pursuit of 142 runs, Chennai were off to a brisk start. While Ruturaj Gaikwad was happy to knock it around, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell had only intent on their minds and took their chances. Neither of the two Kiwis could kick on and get a big score, but Gaikwad held the fort. Moeen Ali had a scratch stay at the crease, and it looked like Rajasthan would claw their way back into the game. Shivam Dube took the wind out of their sails, and although his stay was short, he made sure that Chennai were ahead of the rate. Ravindra Jadeja fell on 5 as he deliberately got in the way of a throw from Sanju Samson, but his dismissal did not derail Chennai's chase as the Impact Player, Sameer Rizvi, along with Ruturaj Gaikwad, ensured there were no more hiccups in the chase.

Strategic break! A big moment in the game but despite the departure of Ravindra Jadeja, it is still Chennai's game to lose. Moreover, they have the calm head of Ruturaj Gaikwad out in the middle who should get the job done for them. Rajasthan are hanging in there and need a couple of quick wickets to put the pressure back on Chennai. Chennai bring in Sameer Rizvi as their Impact Player, replacing Daryl Mitchell. Rizvi walks in at number 7.

OUT! Ravindra Jadeja obstructs the field here! Back of a length, outside off, Ravindra Jadeja opens the bat face and guides it to deep third for a single. He goes for a second, but he is sent back by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Sanju Samson attempts a direct hit at the bowler's but it hits Ravindra Jadeja's left elbow. The umpire sends it upstairs. The replay shows that Ravindra Jadeja had changed his direction after seeing the ball and the Big Screen shows OUT!

Now then, what happened there? Sanju Samson collected the throw at the batting end and had a shy at the bowling end, which hit the back of Ravindra Jadeja, who was scampering to make his ground. Jadeja is aware of where the ball is, and the replays indicate that he has deliberately changed the path to get in the ball's way. And yes, OUT flashes on the big screen.

Commentary

Welcome back. The players and umpires return to the park. It will be Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad will open for Chennai. Trent Boult will have the ball in hand for Rajasthan. Also, Nandre Burger comes in as the impact player sub for Rajasthan, replacing Dhruv Jurel. Here we go!

...THE RUN CHASE...

The pitch is two-paced and offers a lot of help to the slower bowlers. Can Chennai win this and take a step closer to qualification for the playoffs or will Rajasthan get to 18 points and confirm their playoffs spot? We shall find out with the chase in a while.

Chennai's pick of the bowlers, Simarjeet Singh is in for a chat. He says that it was tough bowling in the heat but it was important to put the effort in with the ball. Shares that the ball was stopping in the surface and therefore, he looked to bang it into the deck. Tells that if they bat well, they can get over the line.

The bowling from Chennai was superb, to say the least. The bowlers came in with a plan and stuck to it. They made life difficult for the batters of Rajasthan and did not offer them any loose deliveries throughout the game. Simarjeet Singh was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up three in his spell of four overs and gave away just 26 runs. Tushar Deshpande was amongst the wicket-takers as well as he took 2 in the last over and was pretty economical.

After electing to bat first, Rajasthan were watchful at the beginning and played risk-free cricket during the powerplay and when the time came to explode both the openers were sent back in the hut by the Simarjeet Singh, and that hampered the flow of runs to a massive extinct. Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag were looking good while they lasted in the middle but Sanju Samson's dismissal came right when the two were ready to shift gears. The duo added 42 for the third wicket. After the dismissal of skipper Sanju Samson, Dhruv Jurel along with Riyan Parag took the onus on them to land some lusty blows at the end and take the team to a fighting total. Riyan Parag was the top scorer for Rajasthan as he scored 47 runs. Dhruv Jurel played a timely cameo of 28 from 18. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler got starts but failed to convert them into a big one. The onus will fall on the Rajasthan bowling now to defend this score.

A clinical bowling performance from Chennai sees them restrict the formidable batting line-up of Rajasthan to a mere 141.

Tushar Deshpande closes it out well! Length delivery, outside off, Riyan Parag sets himself deep in his crease and hacks across the line. Mistimes it in the vacant mid-wicket region. Tushar Deshpande gives it a chase and keeps the batters down to just one. 10 runs off the final over and Rajasthan end up with 141 on the board!

19.56

SIX! Invaluable for Rajasthan! Tushar goes into the wicket and serves it around off, Riyan Parag stands tall and gets on top of the bounce to slap it over wide long off for a maximum.

19.42

Keeps it full and straight, on off and middle, Riyan Parag goes deep in his crease and tonks it back over the bowler's head for a couple of runs as the long off fielder mops it up.

19.31

Slower and shorter, on off, Ravichandran Ashwin carves it off the outer half of the bat to deep backward point for one.

Ravichandran Ashwin walks out to face the hattrick delivery from Tushar Deshpande.

19.2W

OUT! CAUGHT! Two in two for Tushar Deshpande! Golden duck for Shubham Dubey. Stays around the wicket and takes pace off. Bangs it into the deck, over off, Shubham Dubey shapes up to get this one over point with an angled bat. Gets undone by the lack of pace and keeps his bat hanging. The ball lobs tamely towards backward point where Shivam Dube does the rest. Rajasthan are now struggling to get to even 140. Hat-trick ball coming up.

Shubham Dubey walks out next to bat.

19.1W

OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Tushar Deshpande starts the final over in the best possible fashion! Steams in from around the wicket and goes full, angling away, outside off, Dhruv Jurel goes deep in his crease and shapes up go straight down the ground. Slices it off the toe-end of the bat. It goes high in the air towards cover where Shardul Thakur settles under the skier and takes the catch.

He does not get the timing right and skies it high in the air towards long on. Sameer Rizvi runs in off the fence and does get there but the ball brushes his fingertips and goes down. Two runs taken.

And yes, OUT flashes on the big screen.

...THE RUN CHASE...

Rajasthan, on the other hand, are coming off two back-to-back losses. They are sitting pretty at number 2 in the table but will want another win and book their place in the knockouts. Facing Delhi in their previous game, Rajasthan gave away 221 runs with Ravichandran Ashwin being the stand-out bowler taking 3 wickets. With the bat, Sanju Samson played a splendid knock of 86 from 46 but departed at the wrong time as the lower order failed to get the job done and were short by 20 runs in the end. Rajasthan have had a brilliant campaign so far and will want to bounce back after losing two games in a row. Let’s see who comes on top in this crucial contest. Toss and team news in a bit. Stay tuned!

Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of Match 61 in the Indian T20 League, 2024. Chennai are hosting Rajasthan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The home side, Chennai, have suffered a blip and have won just 2 of their last six matches. In their previous game against Gujarat, their bowlers conceded over 230 runs where Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande bowled tidy spells while the rest of the attack was taken to the cleaners. Chasing the score, Chennai were dented early and lost three wickets in the Powerplay but Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali counter-attacked with a 109-run stand. Both batters made cracking fifties but the target was a steep one and Chennai fell short by 35 runs. They are still in the top four and will need to get back into winning ways to progress further.

...MATCHDAY...

Into the final 10 group matches of the 2024 Indian T20 League we go then and there's still a lot to play for with numerous sides vying for a playoffs berth. In Match 61 of the competition, two teams that look to seal a top four finish go head-to-head at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai as Chennai take on Rajasthan in a riveting and highly crucial encounter. Chennai, the reigning champions have a couple of games remaining and winning both games might confirm their spot in the knockout phase but a loss here and they will be holding on for dear life in order to make it through. After a fine start to the campaign, Chennai have found it really tough to string together two wins on the bounce and once again after beating Punjab, they faltered in their previous game against Gujarat. They have had injury setbacks with regards to the bowling arsenal and that opening spot alongside skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been a big question mark as the likes of Rachin Ravindra and Ajinkya Rahane just haven't found much consistency. They do have a few batters who have done really including the captain, Shivam Dube and MS Dhoni who has been able to go ballistic in the death overs but need a bit more from the others. The pace attack is definitely a concern and they will be hoping that the spinners can get them through this crunch encounter. On the flip side, Rajasthan were cruising towards the playoffs with 8 wins from 9 games but two losses on the trot and they lost top spot in the table. A win from their remaining 3 games should see them through but they will be targeting a top two berth which gives that additional chance of making it through to the Final. Just like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajasthan's skipper Sanju Samson has had the tournament of a lifetime with the bat and has looked a far more matured player than we have seen in the last couple of years. The openers have been patchy and need to fire as the likes of Riyan Parag and Samson can't always win the game for the side. The bowling has been up and down with regards to the pacers in recent games but the duo of Trent Boult and Sandeep Sharma has managed to do well. The spin twins, Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal will be key, especially given it is a day game in Chennai and it might just come down to which arsenal of spinners bowl better. Can Chennai take a huge step towards qualification with a win here? Or will Rajasthan avoid a hat-trick of defeats and send Chennai on the verge of elimination? We shall find out.
