Commentary

Right then, that is it from this encounter where Delhi are hanging by a thread in this season while it is all but over for Lucknow. However, the action in the Indian T20 League 2024 continues with the race for the playoffs in the final lap now. Rajasthan will take on Punjab on 15th May, Wednesday. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Ishant Sharma is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his fine bowling spell. He says that from the last few games, his knuckle ball was not coming off and Rishabh Pant and Axar were making fun of him. Adds that he wanted to invent something new and it worked as he got Kohli out in the last game and KL Rahul in this one. Credits the physio for keeping him fit for the nine games. Mentions that in a tournament like this if you win close games you can take that momentum forward.

Rishabh Pant, the victorious skipper of Delhi is up for a quick chat. He says Pooran was definitely giving them a hard time but says they had a particular plan to get rid of him and also that the target was enough. Says they started the season with a lot of hope but a few injuries here and there, with a few ups and downs they struggled a bit in the mid-season. Reckons that as a franchise you can't complain all the time. Adds some things are in control and some are not. Appreciates the support he has got from the whole nation and everyone and says he loved every bit of it.

KL Rahul, the captain of Lucknow says that the wicket remained pretty similar throughout the 40 overs. Says they got out Jake Fraser-McGurk early but didn't capitalise further with the ball. He thinks that 200 was a par score and could have been chased down. Adds that losing wickets in the Powerplay has been a problem for them this season and a big reason they have struggled throughout.

Presentation Time...

Kuldeep Yadav is up for a quick chat. He says it was a good wicket to bowl, especially for the spinners, and adds that the ball was getting a good purchase in the second innings. He says the length matters and the wicket was a bit slow and he tried to bowl a little bit fuller. Says it is hard to adjust the length on a slow track and that revs are pretty important as a wrist spinner to spin the ball. Ends up by saying this is an important win and hopes for the best for his team.

Earlier in the game, despite losing Jake Fraser-McGurk early on, Delhi posted above 200 courtesy of a couple of smashing fifties from Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs along with some good contributions from skipper Rishabh Pant and Shai Hope. Naveen-ul-Haq picked up a couple of wickets for Lucknow while Arshad Khan and Ravi Bishnoi chipped in with one each. While chasing, the top order collapsed once again for Lucknow. Nicholas Pooran kept them in the chase while Arshad Khan also played an amazing knock towards the end but it was not meant to be for them. This result now means that Rajasthan becomes the second team to qualify for the playoffs.

Delhi, on the other hand, were brilliant with the new ball especially Ishant Sharma, who picked up three huge wickets in his first three overs to put the away team on the back foot. Axar Patel also got a breakthrough on the very first delivery of his spell but was taken to the cleaners by Nicholas Pooran. After a few expensive overs, the skipper decided to give the ball to Tristan Stubbs who got rid of Ayush Badoni straight away. The turning point came when Mukesh Kumar got the big wicket of Pooran but credit must also be given to Axar for a fine catch. Kuldeep Yadav also chipped in with one as well. However, they lost a bit of control of the game when Arshad Khan was smashing it all around the park and it got quite close towards the end, but the home side held their nerves better here.

Lucknow got off to the worst possible start losing their captain KL Rahul in the very first over. Things didn't improve much when Quinton de Kock went back after a few lusty blows with Marcus Stoinis and Deepak Hooda following suit without much impact. Nicholas Pooran came in with an attacking intent and took on Axar Patel from the start. He continued his aggressive nature while Ayush Badoni tried to provide support but couldn't hang around for much longer. Pooran fought a lone battle with a fantastic fifty, but their hopes were slashed once he was dismissed. Arshad Khan played a few lust blows along with Yudhvir Singh and kept the hopes alive. The former kept losing partners at the other end but smashed a brilliant unbeaten fifty but that was not enough as they fell short by 19 runs.

SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR FOR LUCKNOW! Massive praise to Arshad Khan who was absolutely sensational with the bat but just could not get his team over the line. Delhi had this game in their hands for a long time but then allowed the away side to come back in. However, in the end they managed to get the job done and stay alive in the season. For Lucknow, it is not in their hands anymore.

Done and dusted! Nails a pin-point yorker on the middle, Naveen-ul-Haq digs it out straight to the bowler. Excellent final over by Rasikh Dar with a brilliant execution that helps Delhi to win by 19 runs. With this win, Delhi take those crucial two points and end the league stage with 14 points on the 5th spot. Lucknow lose three on the bounce and things have gotten more complex for Lucknow with this defeat.

19.50

Deceives with another slower one, full in length and outside off, Naveen-ul-Haq goes for a wild swing and misses out totally on the connection.

19.40

What a brilliant piece of bowling from Rasikh! Slower one outside off, Naveen-ul-Haq goes for a reverse ramp shot but misses.

19.31

Yorker on the middle, Arshad Khan digs it out to long off for just a single.

19.22

Full toss outside off, Arshad Khan hits it to deep mid-wicket and scampers back for the second. A lazy throw from the deep by Gulbadin Naib and Pant is not happy with the effort.

19.10

Full toss outside the off stump. Arshad steps outside the crease and whacks it on the bounce to long off and denies a single.

18.62

Yorker outside off, Naveen works this one towards deep third and runs for a single. Arshad calls for the double and Naveen has to really hurry back to get home in time. The fielder throws it flat and nicely from the deep to the keeper's end. Naveen puts in a dive that saves him as the replay shows that he is well inside the popping crease when the wickets were broken.

18.51

Full and on off, Arshad Khan flicks it with wrists to deep mid-wicket for a single.

18.40

A huge confident appeal for LBW but the umpire is unmoved. Just around the leg stump line, on a fuller length, Arshad Khan looks to flick it away across the line but plays it over it and the ball wears on the front pad. The Ball Tracker shows that the ball is pitching outside leg. Delhi burn a review here and the on-field decision stays as it is.

Naveen-ul-Haq is the last man in.

18.31W

OUT! RUN OUT! Knee-length full toss on the stump, he swivels and works it to deep mid-wicket and quickly calls for the double. Ravi Bishnoi obeys his partner and scampers back to complete the second at the non-striker's end. Jake Fraser-McGurk is quick on the ball and throws the ball at the bowling end and hits the bull's eye. The side-on replay confirms that Bishnoi is out of the crease on his dive.

18.21

In the air...lands safe! Slower one outside off, Ravi Bishnoi is early on the shot to swipe it across in the air. The ball slices off his willow and lands behind mid-wicket. Gulbadin Naib runs ahead from deep mid-wicket and collects the ball on a single bounce and keeps it to just a single.

18.11

Short in length, outside off, Arshad Khan picks it over the bowler's head with a flat bat and lands it just ahead of the sprinting long on fielder who collects the ball on a single bounce. Just one then.

17.61

Length delivery wide outside off, Arshad Khan waits for this pace-off delivery and hits it hard to long off and retains his strike with an easy single. This game is pretty much alive with Lucknow needing 29 runs off the last 12 balls remaining.

17.52

A brilliant piece of work in the deep, but a sensational work with the bat from Arshad Khan here as he gets to his 50 in a crucial game, and more importantly batting against the odds. Full and outside off, Arshad Khan again hits it downtown and gets the double. The long off fielder cuts the ball in time with a dive.

17.42

Wide yorker outside off, Arshad Khan squeezes it down in front of mid off and hurries back for the double. Pant is furious with the fielder there and rightly so.

The ball has taken a lot of beating and we will need a replacement. The umpires select one and we are good to continue.

17.36

SIX! OH MY WORD!  Rasikh Dar gets the yorker wrong again and ends up with another poor full toss on off, Arshad Khan picks it up and goes downtown straight over the bowler's head with a strong bottom hand for a biggie.

17.21

Low full toss on off, this is pushed to mid off for a quick single.

17.11

Wide yorker gone wrong, a low full toss outside off, Arshad Khan hits it to widish long off for one.

Commentary

We are back for Lucknow's reply! The two Umpires have already made their way out to the middle. Delhi players are seen in the last-minute huddle near the dugout before spreading out to the field. KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock are the two openers for Lucknow and they stride out to the 22 yards. Delhi has subbed out Abishek Porel and swapped in Ishant Sharma and the latter will straightaway get the chase underway with the new ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Delhi has mounted a challenging total of 208 on the board with some valuable contributions from the middle-order batters. Lucknow has a daunting task up their sleeves but they do have an explosive batting unit as well that holds a reputation for chasing down big targets. Stay tuned as this all-important run chase is up next in a few minutes.

Tristan Stubbs is up for a flash interview. He says that it wasn't easy when he got into bat. Adds that once he was set and got a bit of momentum, they managed to get some runs on the board. Says you cannot really say how much is enough on this ground. Ends by saying that he loves the support from the fans and it is nice to play in front of them.

On the other hand, Lucknow did manage an early breakthrough with Arshad Khan removing Jake Fraser-McGurk. However, their pacers struggled to maintain momentum, leaking runs during the Powerplay. KL Rahul turned to his spinners right after the Powerplay to slow down the run flow, which worked to an extent as Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Hope in his second over. The spinners, especially Ravi Bishnoi, tied down the batters effectively in the mid-overs, with Naveen-ul-Haq also joining the wicket-taking spree with a couple of wickets. Mohsin Khan, although not among the wickets, kept the pressure on and bowled economically. Lucknow however, didn't finish the way they wanted with the ball and were sloppy in the field too as Ravi Bishnoi shelled a couple of catches in the backend. Lucknow gave away quick runs in the slog and conceded 72 runs in the last five overs.

Delhi wraps up on a positive note despite a fluctuating middle-over phase. This marks the 37th occasion where the 200-run mark has been surpassed in this edition of the Indian T20 League, equalling the record set in the previous edition. Delhi's start wasn't the smoothest, losing Jake Fraser-McGurk early as he aimed for a big shot in the very first over. However, Abishek Porel and Shai Hope quickly shifted the momentum with some impressive strokeplay, significantly boosting the scoring rate. Porel, continuing his fine form, displayed classy shots while Hope added some power to the proceedings. They took on the pacers aggressively, giving Delhi a strong start in the Powerplay. Porel reached a well-deserved half-century. Hope, after a powerful cameo, departed on 38. Following a brief quiet period against the spin, Porel's attempt to accelerate led to his dismissal, resulting in Delhi losing a couple of quick wickets. Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs then rebuilt the innings with a crucial partnership of 47 runs. After settling his eyes well, Tristan Stubbs picked up the pace of the innings swiftly. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant's innings came to an end as he attempted to increase the scoring rate on a well-made 33. Stubbs though played a clutch innings and helped Delhi dominate the slog overs and also scored a quickfire 50 off just 22 deliveries.

OUT!

17.36

Slices it off the willow and the ball flies straight to Shai Hope patrolling the long off boundary.

WIDE! Angling down the leg side on a fuller length, Shai Hope misses to flick and the Umpire doesn't give it a Wide. Hope straightaway challenges the decision and opts for a review. UltraEdge shows there's no bat involved and the ball hasn't brushed off the pads either. A good review from Shai Hope. The on-field decision is overturned and a Wide is given.

Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel are the two openers for Delhi. Arshad Khan has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

Rishabh Pant, the captain of Delhi says that they would have batted first anyways. Adds that they will look to score as much as possible and give a big target to the away team. Tells that in the last game, if they didn't lose that many wickets they would have chased the target but it is difficult to judge from the outside. Mentions that the fielding has been a concern throughout the season and dropping that many catches can cost any game. Praises Jake Fraser-McGurk and says that his fearless attitude has impressed him and as a captain, you want that in this format. Informs they have made a couple of changes as he himself comes back in and Gulbadin Naib replaces David Warner.

KL Rahul, the skipper of Lucknow wins the toss and elects to bowl first. He says it's how their team is placed and feels that bowling first has helped their team. Adds that they have experienced batters in the side and says they need to win both their remaining games. Says they have made some mistakes in the past few games, and it's just that they need to be brave enough with the bat and ball. Adds it's about coming out and figuring out what's the best for the team. Further adds that as a bowling unit, you need to stick to good lines and lengths and be brave in trying out variations. Informs Yudhvir Singh and Arshad Khan come into the side.

Kartik joins him and adds there's a bit of sheen and the captain who wins the toss would like to bat first as he reckons batting first has proven to be beneficial here. Swann wraps up by saying the average score on this track has been around 250 which is insane and a lot of runs will be scored here as well.

Lucknow had a solid tournament overall, staying in the top 4 for the most part. However, they've hit a rough patch lately with a couple of significant losses in their recent games, which has definitely dented their NRR. Losing by 10 wickets against Hyderabad and a 98-run margin defeat against Kolkata previously, Lucknow will be eager to bounce back, especially with a couple of games left where they could potentially reach 16 points. However, it's all going to come down to a lot of permutations and combinations, with their focus solely on winning the remaining games and improving their NRR, and also hoping for the other teams to lose. It's a challenging uphill task for the tourists. Will KL Rahul and Co. do the trick or will Delhi execute the double over the visitors? Stay tuned as the toss and the team updates are up next in a few moments.

The hosts, Delhi, had a scratchy initiation to this edition but they did cover up midway through with crucial wins. They slipped in their previous match against Bengaluru and also missed the services of their full-time skipper Rishabh Pant due to a one-match ban. But now, he is available for selection. Jake Fraser-McGurk has been a standout, with his ability to go bonkers from the get-go and inflate the run rate massively, but finding a reliable opening partner for him has been a challenge. The middle order needs to step up their batting game as well. Axar Patel though, has proved to be a valuable all-rounder, especially with his recent batting performances. Kuldeep Yadav's bowling is key too and holds a pivotal role for the side. However, the maximum Delhi can reach is 14 points and then they will have to depend on the other teams for their berth in the Playoffs.

Greetings and a warm welcome to our coverage of Match 64 in the Indian T20 League. We're now into the final stretch of the tournament, with just one team secured for the Playoffs. It's a tight race, with five teams battling it out for the remaining three spots. It's Delhi taking on Lucknow at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Although, these teams will have to do a lot of math and ultimately, the NRR will play a huge role in the end.

... MATCH DAY ...

With six teams still vying for a coveted spot in the playoffs, the Indian T20 League's final stage of group matches has reached its apex, igniting unparalleled excitement and anticipation. Following a swift turnaround from their previous encounter, Delhi now braces itself for a high-stakes clash against Lucknow in their conclusive group stage battle of the season at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, marked as match number 64. Delhi currently find themselves at the precarious 6th position on the league table with 12 points. Following their recent setback against Bengaluru, their hopes of clinching a playoff berth are now dangled by a slender thread. To keep their aspirations alive, Delhi must secure a crucial victory against Lucknow, amplifying their focus on improving their net run rate. However, even this won't assure them a spot in the playoffs, as they must also rely on several other match outcomes swinging in their favour. The absence of their skipper, Rishabh Pant, proved to be a significant blow in their previous outing against Bengaluru. Despite a promising start with the ball, Delhi's bowlers faltered, allowing Bengaluru's middle order to capitalize and post a daunting total of 187 runs. In the chase, Delhi's batting line-up struggled to find momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals under mounting pressure. Although Jake Fraser-McGurk and Shai Hope showed glimpses of promise, they failed to convert their starts into substantial innings. Skipper Axar Patel, however, showcased resilience, notching up a well-deserved half-century in an attempt to steer the team towards victory. Unfortunately, the lack of support from the other end resulted in Delhi succumbing to a hefty 47-run defeat, further denting their net run rate and intensifying the challenge ahead. On the flip side, Lucknow finds itself in the 7th spot with 12 points and two games left to play. Their mission is clear, win both matches and significantly boost their net run rate, a potential decider for playoff contention. However, Lucknow enters this crucial encounter following two consecutive defeats, particularly their recent loss against Hyderabad, a match they'd prefer to erase from memory. Despite the top order's stumble, Lucknow managed to post a competitive total of 165 runs, courtesy of a spirited effort from the middle order. Yet, their momentum was short-lived as the opposition's openers unleashed a relentless assault, effortlessly chasing down the target in a mere 9.4 overs. Now facing adversity, Lucknow must regroup swiftly, aiming to stage a commanding comeback and secure victories with substantial margins to bolster their chances of making it to the playoffs. With so much on the line for both teams, this game promises to be yet another captivating cricketing spectacle in this Indian T20 League.
