Commentary

Right then, that is from this exciting encounter where Gujarat puts a dent in Chennai's qualification hopes. However, the action in the Indian T20 League continues on 11th May Saturday. Kolkata takes on Mumbai at the Eden Gardens and that game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Shubman Gill, the victorious skipper of Gujarat is also the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his exceptional ton. He says that he just has a cramp and nothing more. Adds that when so many people support you and your every run it becomes easier. Tells that he and Sai just were picking their moments and maximized whenever the opportunity arose. Mentions that he loves to bat with Sai and they have a good camaraderie as they run well and know each other well too and in terms of numbers it is their best opening stand. Praises Mohit Sharma for his efforts and says that he was a revelation last season and a few bad games here and there do not make him a bad bowler. Says that at one point they thought 250 was up for taking but Chennai bowled well in the last few overs and they were 10-15 runs short in terms of the NRR.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of Chennai says that they gave away 10-15 runs extra and weren't the best on the field, and with two batters who were hitting all around the field they couldn't do much and couldn't find that wicket. Adds that playing a day game in Chennai after a quick flight against a strong side will be challenging but they look forward to it.

Presentation Time...

Rashid Khan is down for a quick chat. He says that it was amazing to see both Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan go like that and that was something special. Adds that he is happy to get a couple of wickets and the body is getting better slowly and hopes to be 100 percent fit soon. talks about MS Dhoni and says that he has a different kind of love across the globe and is very happy to play with him and the energy he brings on is great too.

Earlier in the game, Gujarat posted a mammoth total on the board courtesy of a recording-breaking opening stand of 210 runs between Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. Both of them were sensational and also notched up their respective hundreds as well. For Chennai, taking wickets was a tough task and they got their first in the 18th over as Tushar Deshpande ended up with two wickets while the other was a run out on the last ball of their innings. While chasing, Chennai's top order failed but Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali gave them some hope. However, once they were dismissed no one could really get a move on as they fell short by 35 runs in the end.

Gujarat, on the other hand, were brilliant with the new ball. David Miller set the tone with a brilliant run out while Sandeep Warrier got a wicket in the first ball of his spell. Rashid Khan took a blinder in front of the ropes to get rid of Ruturaj Gaikwad. The middle overs didn't go as they would expected with both the spinners being a bit expensive and allowed the opposition to come back in the game. However, it was that man with the golden arm, Mohit Sharma who turned the game once again by getting rid of both the set batters and also the big wicket of Shivam Dube. After that, Rashid came in and dismissed Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner in the same over to all but confirm the win.

Chennai needed a brisk start but they suffered a massive blow in the very first over as Rachin Ravindra got run out. Ajinkya Rahane followed suit on the next delivery and they were on the back foot right from the start. Ruturaj Gaikwad demoted himself to number 3 but that didn't work as he couldn't make much impact but was a bit unfortunate as well as it was a great catch by Rashid Khan. However, after that, Daryl Mitchell and Moeen Ali steadied their ship for a while and they needed that partnership. The duo added 109 runs together and registered their respective fifties as well at a good rate but unfortunately lost their wickets in quick succession. They didn't have any time to rebuild, so Shivam Dube went back after a quick cameo. Ravindra Jadeja played a few lusty blows and MS Dhoni made 26 off just 11 balls to reduce the margin of loss.

GUJARAT JUST ABOUT STAYS ALIVE IN THE TOURNAMENT! Although they do not have everything in their own hands, they can hurt a lot of teams just like they did Chennai in this game. It was the Gill-Sudarshan show in the first half and their bowlers backed it up pretty well in the second. Chennai suffered a big defeat at a crucial stage of the season and took a hit at their NRR which is not at all ideal for them.

Commentary

We are back with the chase! The two umpires make their way out to the middle followed by the Gujarat fielders who are spreading out to take the field. It will be Rachin Ravindra along with Ajinkya Rahane the impact substitute replacing Tushar Deshpande to open the innings for Chennai. Sandeep Warrier replaces Sai Sudharsan as an impact substitute for Gujarat and Rahul Tewatia is the stand-in keeper. It will be Umesh Yadav who will bowl the first over and here we go..

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Chennai's decision to bowl first initially seemed to pay off, as they managed to bowl tight overs intermittently. However, their inability to produce breakthroughs allowed the opposition to score freely. Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad desperately sought the first breakthrough, marshalling his bowlers, but they struggled to find respite against a formidable opening partnership. It was Tushar Deshpande who finally provided the breakthrough in the 18th over, dismissing Sai Sudharsan, followed swiftly by the wicket of Shubman Gill, which stemmed the flow of runs in the final overs. Chennai's bowlers managed to curtail the onslaught, finishing strongly and restricting Gujarat to 231 runs, a total they can be satisfied with given the blistering position their opponents had at the time. With dew settling in and the pitch offering favourable conditions for batting, Chennai will be optimistic but will rely on a strong start from openers to chase down the target effectively. Will Gujarat be able to defend this big total or will Chennai showcase their absolute best with the bat? We shall soon find out as the chase comes to you in a bit.

Sai Sudharsan, the man of the moment is down for a quick chat. He says this is how they wanted to play all the time. Adds that the wicket was great to bat on but can't really say how much is enough on the track. Adds that mixing up and going wider could be a great option for the bowlers. Says that the wicket was sticking in a bit at the start but it kept getting better. States that it was great to watch Gill and he is learning a lot from him as well. Ends by saying that he tries to give his best and this was a special game for him.

Chennai finish well but it was an extraordinary opening partnership that set the stage on fire for Gujarat, propelling them to a commanding total of 231 runs at the culmination of the first innings. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill initiated the innings cautiously, but it was Gill, the skipper, who assumed the role of the aggressor early on, laying a solid foundation for the team by the end of the powerplay. While Gill faced a slight dip in timing, Sai Sudharsan stepped up admirably, unleashing a flurry of lusty blows during the middle overs and maintaining a brisk scoring rate without taking undue risks. The duo seamlessly shifted gears, eventually notching up well-deserved centuries only to be dismissed in the same over after tallying for the joint highest first-wicket partnership in the history of the Indian T20 League. Although David Miller and Shahrukh Khan couldn't seamlessly replicate the onslaught, Gujarat concluded well, culminating in their formidable total of 231.

19.30

Another low full toss, outside off, angling away, David Miller tries to drives it away but misses. The umpire gives it as a fair delivery and Gujarat takes another review. The replay shows that Miller moved across a bit before the ball was bowled, so it will remain legal delivery. Gujarat loses both reviews!

19.31wd

Tries for the wide yorker but serves this way outside off, David Miller leaves it alone. Wided. Gujarat takes a review to see if it is a No Ball but the replay shows that it crossed the pitch and then landed on the ground. It remains as a wide.

We are all set to begin! The two umpires make their way out to the middle. We can also see the Chennai players in a huddle and now they spread out to take their respective field positions. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill are the two openers for Gujarat. Spin straightaway as Mitchell Santner has the new ball in hand. Let's play...

Shubman Gill, the skipper of Gujarat says that they would have bowled first as well. Adds that it looks like a nice wicket and he would have loved to chase. Tells that there is still a one percent chance of them qualifying and they give their all as long as there is a chance. Mentions that the mood remains the same and they would like to go there and score a lot of runs and then defend it. Informs Wriddhiman Saha misses out and Matthew Wade comes in while Kartik Tyagi makes his debut for the team in place of Joshua Little.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of Chennai says they will bowl first. Adds that it looks like a good wicket but seems to be slightly sticky but has favoured chasing and they will look to do the same. Mentions that the mood in the camp is relaxed and in a tournament like this everybody has to be in a good headspace. Concludes that he is happy with the way things have gone so far and says Rachin Ravindra comes in for Richard Gleeson.

Gujarat (Playing XI) - Shubman Gill (C), Sai Sudharsan, Shahrukh Khan, David Miller, Matthew Wade (WK and In pace of Wriddhiman Saha), Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Umesh Yadav (In place of Manav Suthar), Mohit Sharma, Kartik Tyagi (In place of Joshua Little and on team debut).

Impact Players for Chennai - Ajinkya Rahane, Shaik Rasheed, Aravelly Avanish, Sameer Rizvi, Mukesh Choudhary.

Chennai (Playing XI) - Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Rachin Ravindra (In place of Ajinkya Rahane), Daryl Mitchell, Shivam Dube, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (WK), Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Tushar Deshpande, Simarjeet Singh.

TOSS - Ruturaj Gaikwad calls it right. Yes, you read that right, Gaikwad has finally won a toss and Chennai have elected to BOWL first.

On the flip side, Chennai strides into this match buoyed by a commanding performance with the ball, a facet that has posed challenges for them throughout this season. However, the underwhelming performance of Ajinkya Rahane at the top of the order looms as a crucial concern, particularly with the team's urgent need for wins to navigate through the mid-table clutter. Despite grappling with injury concerns and international commitments affecting their bowling unit, Chennai's resilience shines through with the replacements having seamlessly filled the void, stepping up admirably. With this game being a potential knockout for Gujarat and a must-win for Chennai, the anticipation of it being an enthralling display of cricket is certain. Who do you think will emerge victorious? We shall soon find out as the Toss and team updates unfold in a bit.

Gujarat find themselves at the bottom of the points table with their hopes for qualification dangling by a slender thread. To keep their playoff dreams alive, they must secure victories in all three remaining games while also banking on other results. Despite entering this match on the back of three consecutive losses, Shubman Gill and Co. will be poised to channel their determination and will be eager to turn the tide, igniting a spark of hope for a coveted spot in the top four. To achieve this feat, Gujarat must summon their collective strength and unity, which has been somewhat elusive this season.

Hello and welcome to match number 59 of the final phase of the Indian T20 League, where Gujarat plays host to the defending Champions, Chennai, at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Set against the backdrop of a fiercely competitive scramble for playoff berths, this encounter promises to be nothing short of exhilarating.

With an electrifying start to the week and a series of pivotal games, the mid-table showdown has reached fever pitch in the Indian T20 League. Shubman Gill and his squad currently languish at the bottom of the points table with a mere 8 points to their name. With just three games left, Gujarat must secure victories in all of them to keep their playoff hopes alive. However, confidence seems to be in short supply as they enter this game on the back of three consecutive losses. In their recent clash against Bengaluru, aside from David Miller, Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia, the batting lineup faltered, managing only 147 runs, a daunting total to defend at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. While Joshua Little and Noor Ahmad put up a valiant effort with the ball, the total proved insufficient as they succumbed to a 4-wicket defeat. Gujarat urgently requires their bowling unit to rise to the occasion and fill the void that has plagued them thus far in the season. Meanwhile, Chennai slips a notch to fourth place on the points table after Hyderabad's stellar performance propelled them up the rankings. Chennai, however, managed to return to winning ways in their recent encounter against Punjab, with their bowlers stepping up admirably despite earlier concerns. The opening partnership remains a worry, with Ajinkya Rahane yet to find his rhythm up top. Skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Daryl Mitchell and Ravindra Jadeja have displayed resilience and delivered noteworthy performances, but key player Shivam Dube has failed to make an impact in the last two outings which has proved crucial to the side. Despite losing wickets in clusters, Chennai's batting lineup managed to post a respectable total of 167 runs in their last game, a tally adequately defended by a stellar bowling performance led by Tushar Deshpande and Ravindra Jadeja, with Simarjeet Singh impressing with his pace and precision, sealing the game with a 28-run victory margin. Chennai will take solace in their positive net run rate, which could prove pivotal going ahead. The stage is now set for both teams to make strides on the points table as they lock horns in this highly anticipated fixture. Who do you think will emerge victorious?
