Commentary

Right then, the first weekend of the 2024 Indian T20 League is done and we have witnessed five fairly close matches and a couple of them were really close. Next up, a new week begins in the competition and on Monday, 25 March, Bengaluru will take on an upbeat Punjab team at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up. Cheers!

Sai Sudharsan is the Player of the Match for his gritty knock of 45 runs from 39 balls. Sai says that he feels it was difficult in the first innings but with the dew, it became a bit easier in the second innings to start with but they bowled well. Adds that he is taking one game at a time and trying to get better and reckons that in this game it was about choosing the balls to go big wisely. Mentions that they had more than a few stellar performances in the second innings and their bowlers adapted and executed their plans well.

Shubman Gill, the skipper of Gujarat reflects on his team's performance. He acknowledges the challenge posed by the dew factor but commends his teammates for maintaining their composure despite the conditions. Gill particularly praises the efforts of spinners Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore, highlighting their role in keeping Gujarat competitive despite the dew. Gill expresses appreciation for the impact of Mohit Sharma on the team, describing him as a game-changer since his arrival. He credits Sharma's consistent performances, noting his significant contributions in the previous season as well. Additionally, Gill recognizes the unwavering support of the home crowd, emphasizing their consistent presence and enthusiasm, whether during day or night matches.

The Presentation ceremony...

Spencer Johnson is now down for a chat. He starts by saying that he is ecstatic to get the win in front of a big crowd and is really happy that the coach backed him for that 19th over even after going for plenty in his first over. Adds that it is all about keeping calm and hitting that hard length and says that it is easily the biggest crowd he has played in front of. On Shubman Gill, he says that Gill is an amazing person and gave him good advice on the short bus ride from the hotel and reckons that he is a fine captain.

Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai captain, shares his thoughts on the match. He acknowledges that while the team backed themselves to chase the target of 169 runs, they lost momentum in the final overs, which impacted their chase. Despite the setback, Pandya expresses satisfaction with his return to the field, particularly relishing the vibrant atmosphere of the stadium, fueled by the enthusiastic crowd. Regarding Tilak's decision not to take singles, Pandya supports the batsman's judgment, indicating that Tilak Varma likely believed it was best to retain strike for Tim David, a decision that Pandya fully endorses, showing confidence in his teammate's decision-making.

Mumbai will be gutted with that loss and they have mostly themselves to blame. Ishan Kishan let them down early on and then the middle order also faltered. Rohit Sharma really well to anchor the innings and played his shots as well and at one time, he and Dewald Brevis made things look easy out in the middle. Both got into the 40s but couldn't kick on and then the trio of Tilak Varma, Tim David and skipper Hardik Pandya couldn't turn the tide back in Mumbai's favour. Mumbai continue their 12-year trend of losing their opening fixture and this is one record they won't be proud of.

What a game we have witnessed here! An absolute humdinger and it ebbed and flowed both ways but in the end, Gujarat have somehow clinched it. What a morale-boosting win this could turn out to be for Gujarat and the celebrations on the field tell it all as the players huddle up and rejoice. Gujarat seemed down and out when Rohit Sharma and Dewald Brevis were at the crease but that wicket from Sai Kishore turns the tide and from then on they were in the zone. They started off brightly with the ball picking up a wicket in the first over but couldn't really capitalize in the middle overs but the likes of Mohit Sharma and Spencer Johnson came back strongly and Umesh Yadav finished things off really well. Shubman Gill will be happy to get a win in his first outing as captain and he is currently the youngest skipper in this year's tournament.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are already out in the middle now. Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma are the two openers for Mumbai. Azmatullah Omarzai to start the proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, it's now up to Mumbai as to how will they approach the chase. With Rohit Sharma at the top, in good form, gives Mumbai a good cushion to launch from. Will Mumbai chase it down with no complications or will Gujarat bowlers stand up to the occasion and get the job done for their young skipper? A lot falls on Rashid Khan and Umesh Yadav as they bring in good experience for Gujarat. Let's see what happens in the Run Chase.

The top-scorer for Gujarat, Sai Sudharsan is up for a quick chat. He says that the wicket is a bit tricky and there was some turn as well. Adds that this is a good total and he hopes that they can defend this one. Tells that this was not a wicket where you could take on the bowlers from the start but to give yourself a bit of time and then pick the moments. Mentions that Bumrah bowled really well by he enjoyed that match-up. Says that the spinners will surely come into play as the dew is also a bit less than usual.

Gujarat commenced their innings with a strong opening partnership between Wriddhiman Saha and captain Shubman Gill, who showcased excellent strokeplay. However, Jasprit Bumrah's early breakthrough, dismissing Saha for 19 runs, provided Mumbai with a crucial wicket. Gill continued to anchor the innings but fell for 31 runs in the eighth over, leaving Gujarat at 47/1 at the end of the Powerplay. Sai Sudharsan and Azmatullah Omarzai then built a steady partnership, adding 40 runs for the third wicket. However, Gerald Coetzee struck for Mumbai, claiming his maiden Indian T20 League wicket by dismissing Omarzai for 17 runs. Sudharsan remained solid at the crease, partnering with David Miller to consolidate Gujarat's position. Yet Bumrah's twin strikes in the 17th over, removing Miller and Sudharsan in quick succession, halted Gujarat's momentum. Despite the setback, Rahul Tewatia's aggressive cameo helped Gujarat reach a competitive total, finishing their innings at 168/6.

Mumbai will be happy with their performance where Gujarat will need to bowl really well to get a win tonight! The innings concludes with Gujarat setting a target of 169 runs for Mumbai to chase down. After being asked to bat first, Gujarat managed to post a respectable total of 168 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Although they aimed for a higher total, the frequent loss of wickets hampered their progress. Despite this, Mumbai will view their bowling effort positively and enter the chase with confidence.

Stay tuned for the team news and Pitch Report.

Gujarat, a recent addition to the league, made a remarkable entry by clinching the trophy in their debut season and securing a runners-up finish last season. However, they will miss the leadership of Hardik Pandya, who has returned to Mumbai and will also captain the side. Taking over the helm for Gujarat is the talented and in-form Shubman Gill, who impressed as the leading run-scorer last season and aims to continue his stellar performance. With Rashid Khan ready to make an impact, Gujarat looks poised for another strong season, despite the absence of Mohammed Shami. On the other side, Mumbai has undergone significant changes, including the return of Hardik Pandya, who now leads the team. Despite their illustrious history with five titles, Mumbai missed the playoffs in the last two seasons, an unusual scenario for the powerhouse team. They aim to reclaim their winning ways this season, banking on the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the previous season.

The Indian T20 League 2024 is off to an exhilarating start, and as the competition heats up, it's time for the second doubleheader. In the second match of the day, Gujarat will lock horns with Mumbai in Match number 5 at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both teams, former winners of the tournament, are eager to add to their past glories.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2024 edition of the Indian T20 League is up and running and it is now time for the second doubleheader of the competition. In the second match on 24 March, Gujarat will go up against Mumbai in Match number 5 at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad. Two teams who are former winners of the competition and will be hungry to add to that glory. Gujarat, one of the two recent-joiners of the Indian T20 League have achieved huge success in their first two seasons as they went on to lift the trophy in their first season and followed that up with a runners-up finish last season. However, they will be without the man who led them to that success, Hardik Pandya as he made the switch back to Mumbai and will captain the side as well. The man dubbed as 'the Prince of Indian cricket,' Shubman Gill will be Gujarat's new skipper and would want to replicate his fine showing from last season where he ended as the leading run-scorer and almost became the second batter after Virat Kohli to amass 1000 runs in a single season. A fit and ready Kane Williamson will be itching to get going as well and so will the spin maestro Rashid Khan as he spent a fair few months on the sidelines due to an injury. The absence of Mohammed Shami will also be a big blow to Gujarat but they have added Umesh Yadav to fill that role and Mohit Sharma will be expected to do what he did last season. They do seem to have batting depth with the likes of Sai Sudharsan, David Miller and Rahul Tewatia in the middle order. Another exciting prospect going by the name of Spencer Johnson is also a part of Gujarat's squad and going by his recent performances, he could be that standout performer for them. Mumbai on the other hand have had a bit of shuffle as they traded Cameron Green to Bengaluru to bring back the 'prodigal son,' in the form of Hardik Pandya and he was handed the captaincy over Rohit Sharma which did raise a few eyebrows but could turn out to be a masterstroke as well. They have failed to make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons which is very unlikely for Mumbai, a team that has won 5 titles and this season, they will be looking to get back to those glory days. Suryakumar Yadav is a big doubt for the opening game and maybe for the starting few matches as well and he was their best performer last season. The big positive for them is that Jasprit Bumrah is back after missing the whole of last season and he has been in scintillating form in international cricket off late as well. Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera and Piyush Chawla, three standouts from last season will be expected to keep it going whereas Ishan Kishan will be fighting hard to get back into the mix for the national team. Tim David has been in good form of late too and will be expected to finish games for them. The bowling does look a bit short but Gerald Coetzee and Luke Wood could turn out to be a huge positive for them. All in all, two teams have big expectations on their heads but only one can start the season with a win. Who are you backing?
