Commentary

Right then, a morale-boosting win for Bengaluru and they seem to have found a second wind here but still, they are well below in the points table and need to win all of their remaining games to have a shot at the playoffs. This was a big setback for Gujarat who continue to slip in the points table and the next game becomes a lot more crucial for them. Anyway, as it is a doubleheader Sunday, there is one more game coming your way as Chennai take on Hyderabad in a spicy battle at the Chepauk. Hyderabad have decided to bowl first in that game and you can simply switch tabs and catch our coverage with the game about to start just in a few minutes time. Cheers!

Will Jacks is the Player of the Match for his wonderful ton, which is also the fifth-fastest ton in the tournament's history. Jacks says that he is feeling amazing right now and he struggled after the openers got off to a good start but Virat Kohli kept him composed and once he started to fire, it all got pretty simple. Adds that he was over-hitting the ball early on but trusted himself a bit more and managed to get his timing correct. On Kohli, he says that he is a giant of the gamer and it a great learning curve and when he leaves this competition, this learning curve will help him. Reckons that he was a bit lucky today as not always one manages to kick on after being 17 off 17 balls.

The skipper of Bengaluru, Faf du Plessis says the wicket was really good. Adds that it feels like they have started making progress in both departments and the confidence is on the high for both batters and the bowlers. Mentions that the game has changed so much and it is not just looking at the scorecard and assuming what are the bowlers doing out there, for instance, the game against Kolkata where they conceded over 220 but it felt like the bowlers bowled the best in that game and such has the game become.

The presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Faf du Plessis won the toss and decided to bowl first in an afternoon game and his side started off more than decently with the ball. Mohammed Siraj and Swapnil Singh struck early for Bengaluru and Gujarat were left reeling inside the Powerplay. However, Sai Sudharsan once again dug his side out of trouble with a well-composed knock and Shahrukh Khan who was sent up the order did a fine job in the middle overs as well. The duo stitched together 86 runs before Khan got out but Sai stayed on and along with David Miller got the side to 200 runs. Sai remained unbeaten on 86 runs and Gujarat had a big total on board. With the ball, Siraj, Swapnil and Yash Dayal were solid but the others couldn't quite keep the scoring rate in check.

Virat Kohli is now down for a chat. Kohli says that it was phenomenal from Will Jacksl and he (Jacks) was annoyed early on to not find his timing but the chat was to just keep going at it,. Adds that Jacks took on Mohit Sharma and from there, the roles changed and they thought they would chase it down in 19 overs but it just finished so quickly. Reckons that the wicket was good and with the air cooling down later in the evening, the ball came onto the bat well and he just tried to keep ahead of the required rate. On surpassing 500 runs this season, he says that about him it is just about winning the game for the team and the numbers are for those who are concerned with his strike rate and form against spin and it is just about muscle memory for him having done it for 15 years. Mentions that it is about self-respect and they have to be more aggressive as they haven't been at their best so far.

Shubman Gill, the captain of Gujarat reflects on the match. He says it was great hitting by the opposition batters and having said that they need to come up with better plans with the ball next time around. Adds that they thought it was a good enough total for them but this did not turn out to be that way. Mentions that they were not able to pick up wickets in the middle phase which has been their strength throughout and that cost them the game.

Gujarat will be gutted with that loss and will be wondering as to what happened out there. At one moment it looked like 200 was a few runs over par on this track but in the end, it proved to be nowhere near par as Gujarat were handed a thumping defeat with 24 balls still remaining. The frontline pacers made a decent start with the ball and Sai Kishore came in and got an early wicket as well but they couldn't really stem the flow of runs in the Powerplay. The middle phase was a big let down as Noor Ahmad seemed out of form and the likes of Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma failed to make any impact. Towards the end, it was the experienced duo of Khan and Sharma that was put to the sword by Will Jacks with each bowler conceding 29 runs in a single over and Gujarat really need to bounce back after this performance.

BENGALURU ARE STILL ALIVE AND KICKING! Wow, that was some hitting from the Bengaluru batters and especially Will Jacks as he just killed the game in a span of two overs. Bengaluru were always on par or ahead of the required rate and to be honest, Gujarat have been well beaten here. Needing 201 runs to win on a pitch that definitely looked to be aiding the slower bowlers, Bengaluru have hardly broken a sweat in chasing the total down as they did it in 16 overs. Faf du Plessis was quick out of the blocks in the Powerplay and Virat Kohli too tried to keep going hard. Faf got out and then Kohli started to find his mojo and brought up a half-century. Jacks at the other end was 17 off 17 balls at one time but finished on 100 unbeaten off just 41 balls, truly a sensational knock by all means and the duo of Kohli and Jacks had an unbeaten stand of 166 runs.

SIX! CENTURY FOR Will Jacks! Will Jacks has taken Rashid Khan for 29 runs in this over and he has reached his century in the blink of an eye. From 17 off 17 to a century of 41 deliveries Will Jacks has grown in stature with such an innings. This was a tossed-up delivery wide of off, Will Jacks drags this from outside off for a maximum over the long on region. Bengaluru wins this by 9 wickets.

15.56

15.44

FOUR! This time he finds the fence for four. Tossed up in middle, Will Jacks hammers this through the ground towards the gap at deep mid-wicket for a boundary. Rashid Khan has no answer to this onslaught from Will Jacks.

15.26

SIX! Will Jacks is dealing in maximums. Short of a length in middle, Will Jacks clears his front leg and hammered this 10 rows behind the fence for a maximum.

Oh, a dot ball to end the over but 29 runs come off it and that seems to be game over for Gujarat. Full and wide, pace on as well and in the blockhole, Will Jacks reaches out to squeeze it away but toe-ends it straight to short third.

14.54

FOUR! Oh, that was so close to being another maximum. Bowled into the pitch a bit and over off stump, Will Jacks slogs it away a bit flat and well wide of long on. The replays show that the ball just hit the ropes on the half-volley and it will be four runs.

14.46

SIX! Will Jacks has gone straight from second to sixth gear and no kind of slower delivery is working for Mohit Sharma. This is bowled from the back of the hand but right in the slot around off, Jacks hits through the line of the ball and whacks it straight down the ground for another biggie.

14.32

Slower one, bowled full and well wide, Will Jacks throws his hands at it and gets a top edge over the backward point region for a couple of runs.

14.37nb

No ball and SIX! Oh, dear! Mohit Sharma seems to have lost all his control over the ball. Goes pace on and looks to bowl full at the batter but ends up serving a beamer over the leg stump and it is angling in, Jacks manages to flick it off his body over fine leg and for a maximum. Free Hit coming up...

14.26

SIX! FIFTY up for Will Jacks and what a knock this has been from the Englishman! Another slower ball, on a good length and around off, Jacks holds his shape well and launches it high over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. Gujarat and Mohit Sharma under the pump now.

14.14

FOUR! Will Jacks is chancing his arm now and is getting the boundaries away! Short of a length over middle, Jacks picks it early and pulls it flat to the right of deep mid-wicket for a boundary.

Comes from around the stumps, bowling it quicker and flatter on middle and leg, Will Jacks gets an inside edge past leg stump as he looks to pull and gets it toward short fine leg for one.

13.56

SIX! Similar line and length and this time, Will Jacks connects and connects well. Fuller one on the leg peg, turning in, Jacks goes down on one knee and slog-sweeps it sweetly over deep square leg for a maximum.

13.44b

FOUR BYES! Unlucky for the bowler and Noor Ahmad cannot believe it. Nice and full on leg stump, turning in sharply, Will Jacks misses the sweep and the ball just turns past the leg stump, no chance of the keeper and rolls away into the fence.

13.30

Drags the length right back and bowls the wrong'un well outside off, Will Jacks is already backing away and is unable to reach it in the end.

13.21

Fuller on the legs, nudged away past square leg for an easy single.

13.12

On the shorter side and outside off, Virat Kohli stays back and plays a whippy shot flat through covers for a couple of runs.

Time for the final strategic break of the game. It has been a chase well orchestrated by the chase master himself as Virat Kohli stands tall in between Gujarat and 2 points. The positive for Bengaluru has been the way Will Jacks has started to find the middle of his bat in this middle phase. A lot now depends on this duo to take the side home without any hiccups.

Commentary

We are back! The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of Gujarat. Gujarat have also brought on Sandeep Warrier as the Impact Player for Sai Sudharsan. It will be the dynamic duo of skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli to open the innings for Bengaluru. Azmatullah Omarzai with the new ball in hand. Let's go...

... The Run Chase ...

The bowling from Bengaluru was good to start with but they lost the way in the middle as the spinners were dominated by Sai Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan. Swapnil Singh was brilliant as he was hard to hit and picked up a wicket but he was used for just 3 overs. Mohammed Siraj and Glenn Maxwell took a wicket each as well. The pitch has a lot of assistance for the slower bowlers and spinners and with Gujarat having quality spinners in their ranks this is going to be a mouth-watering chase. We will be back with the chase in a while.

Shahrukh Khan says that he enjoyed batting at number four and he knew he could take on the pacers and just looked to pick up the singles against the spinners before going big. Adds that just before the game, the coach told him that he would be batting at number 4. Reckons that it did spin early on but it got better as the innings went on. Says that he has been practicing hard and is glad that it came off in this game and adds that it is a pleasure playing alongside Sai Sudharsan and they know each other pretty well.

After being put in to bat first, Gujarat started slowly off the hooks and lost both the openers relatively early in the game. With both Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill back in the hut with just 45 on board it was then up to the middle order to step up and they did it astonishingly. Shahrukh Khan was promoted up in the order and that ploy worked perfectly for Gujarat as he along with Sai Kishore knitted a partnership of 86 runs in just 45 deliveries and managed to place a perfect platform for the finishers to come and launch from. Sai Sudharsan and David Miller then took the onus to finish the innings well on themselves and they did brilliantly adding 69 runs and closing the game on a high for the side. Sai Sudharsan showcased his class once again and played a gem of a knock scoring 84 in just 49 deliveries. Shahrukh Khan too batted well as he scored 58 runs at a healthy strike rate. David Miller played a quickfire cameo of 26 as well.

We are at the halfway stage of the game with Gujarat posting 200 on board after completing 20 overs. Gujarat was in a situation of bother but a solid third-wicket partnership of 86 runs followed by a fantastic finish to their innings by David Miller and Sai Sudharsan has helped them post a really good total.

SIX! BANG! David Miller finishes off in style and Gujarat do get to 200 runs. Poor ball from Yash Dayal though as he serves a juicy full toss on middle stump. Miller gets under it well and launches it over the mid-wicket fence for a biggie. Gujarat also go upstairs for a no ball check but it is deemed as a fair delivery, definitely below waist height and that will be the end of the first innings. Gujarat finish with 200/3 on the board!

19.52

Just short! This is bowled short and at the body, David Miller pulls it flat towards long on where Will Jacks comes charging in and just fails to reach it. He does well to get his body behind the line and it will be a couple of runs.

19.41

A toe-crushing yorker, squeezed out on the off side by Sai Sudharsan for a single.

19.32

Wow, that is some effort from Rajat Patidar and what presence of mind as well. A short ball outside off, pace off and Sai Sudharsan lifts it high towards deep cover where Rajat covers a fair few yards to his left and even takes the catch but is aware that the momentum is taking him over the ropes and manages to flick the ball back in time. Just the two runs then.

19.21

A good yorker, right around the toes, David Miller flicks it away to deep square leg and turns the strike over.

19.21wd

WIDE! Pace on this time and pushes the wide yorker just beyond the tramline for a wide.

19.12

Takes all the pace off the ball and digs in halfway down the track over middle, David Miller has to wait for it and manages to pull it wide enough of long on in order to come back for the second run.

19.11wd

WIDE! Attempted slower one, pitched up but well outside off stump. Left alone for a wide.

18.61wd

WIDE! Goes for the same ball again but spills it well beyond the tramline outside off for a big wide.

18.50

Pace on this time, bowled full and wide and right in the blockhole, David Miller is unable to reach it. Good comeback from Siraj in the last two balls.

18.40

A slower bumper, angled across the left-hander, David Miller looks to take it on but is way too early in his shot.

18.34

FOUR! Straight as an arrow and the 50-run stand is up between these two. Full and straight, missing the yorker-length and David Miller is waiting for it. Miller gets the front leg out of the way and drills it straight back for a boundary. Good work from the umpire to get out of the way.

18.21

Just out of reach! Siraj goes full and wide, Sai Sudharsan throws his hands at it and gets a top edge over the point region. Will Jacks goes after it from backward point and seems to be in control but it swirls away and Jacks has to hurry and puts in the dive but just can't get to it.

18.16

SIX! Sai Sudharsan, you beauty! Goes full and at the stumps, nothing wrong with the ball but Sai is just too good, shuffling across and scooping it over fine leg for a maximum.

Mohammed Siraj will bowl the penultimate over of the Gujarat innings.

17.41

Gets the wide yorker in this time and this is jammed out in front of mid off for a single.

17.34

FOUR! Would you believe it? Sai Sudharsan picks the same gap again and makes it three boundaries on the trot. Slower one from Cameron Green, dug in a bit and over off stump, one hand comes off the handle for Sai but he manages to pull it away wide of long on for four runs.

17.24

FOUR! Right in the gap and Cameron Green is being put away here. Keeps bowling it short, on that hard length and over off stump, Sai Sudharsan pulls it off the front foot and in between deep mid-wicket and long on for another boundary.

17.14

FOUR! Flailed away! Back of a length but a bit too wide of the off stump, Sai Sudharsan does well to reach it and keep his balance before lifting it over cover-point for a boundary.

Miller gets under it well and launches it over the mid-wicket fence for a biggie. Gujarat also go upstairs for a no ball check but it is deemed as a fair delivery, definitely below waist height and that will be the end of the first innings. Gujarat finish with 200/3 on the board!

Grip and bounce straightaway for Swapnil Singh as he floats one outside off, Wriddhiman Saha blocks it out.

We are set for the start of the game. The umpires are out in the middle and so are the players of Bengaluru. It will be the usual pairing of skipper Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha to open the innings for Gujarat. Spin to start proceedings here as Swapnil Singh has been handed the new ball.

Shubman Gill, the captain of Gujarat says that they would have chased as well but mentions that it is a pretty good wicket and will now look to put runs on the board. Adds that apart from a couple of matches, they have batted decently and even when chasing 225n or so in the last game, they lost narrowly and ends by informing that they are going with the same team.

Faf du Plessis, the captain of Bengaluru has won the toss and says it is pretty much a 50-50 split and the local guys say that the pitch will do better later so they'll bowl first. Mentions that the bowling wasn't up to the mark in the starting but in the last couple of games the bowlers have stepped up. Additionally, the nature of T20 cricket has changed a bit and the scoreboard doesn't reflect what went throughout the game. Mentions that Glenn Maxwell comes in as it is a day game and he will add a lot of firepower in the middle.

Impact subs for Bengaluru - Mahipal Lomror, Anuj Rawat, Himanshu Sharma, Akash Deep, Vijaykumar Vyshak.

Bengaluru (Playing XI) - Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (C), Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Dinesh Karthik (WK), Karn Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Yash Dayal, Swapnil Singh.

Gujarat (Playing XI) - Shubman Gill (C), Wriddhiman Saha (WK), Sai Sudharsan, Azmatullah Omarzai, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, Rashid Khan, Sai Kishore, Noor Ahmad, Mohit Sharma.

TOSS - Up goes the coin and it lands in favor of Faf du Plessis. Bengaluru will BOWL first.

PITCH REPORT - Graeme Swann and Michael Clarke are Pitchside says the pockets are tiny with the boundaries not that big. Mentions that it is stinking hot and the wicket looks good. It's dry and the spinners will enjoy on this surface and it looks like a 170-180 surface. Says it will be consistent whether you're bowling first or second. Adds that the teams are going to rely on the spinners and the pacers will change their pace a lot on this track.

There are always individual match-ups in such games but Virat Kohli up against Shubman Gill is a particularly intriguing one as the 'King' of Indian cricket has scored heavily but has received some criticism regarding his strike rate this season and on the other hand, the upcoming 'Prince' of Indian cricket has been up on Kohli's heel in the last couple of seasons. In this fixture last season, both batters scored a ton but it was Gill who stole the show and broke Bengaluru's heart. Will it be the same today as well? Only time will tell. Toss and teams news in just a few minutes now.

Gujarat also haven't been at their best this season. The finalists from last year have been fighting hard to find consistency among their squad. They have won 4 games but still sit in the bottom half of the points table. They are riding on the back of a recent loss and will eye for the win in this one. In the bowling unit, Sandeep Warrier has been impressive with his consistency in the recent games but the others are yet to get going. Mohit Sharma was taken to the cleaners by Rishab Pant in a game against Delhi and now holds the unwanted record for the most expensive spell in the history of this league. They were forced to try and chase a huge total but their batting department couldn't meet up to that challenge. Sai Sudarshan and David Miller were the highlights of their batting unit while the others couldn't support them. The batters and the bowlers will hope that they find their rhythm back and get a win under their belt at home. This is expected to be a thrilling encounter so stay tuned while we bring you the toss and team news.

Hello and a very warm welcome folks. The festival of cricket, The Indian T20 League is in full swing and it is time for match number 45 which will see the clash between Gujarat and Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Bengaluru has been all but knocked out of the playoff race this season owing to their poor form. In the 9 matches played, they have managed to win only twice. However, they can still spoil the party for many teams and if they win all their remaining games, they might have an outside chance plus they come into this game on the back of a recent win over Hyderabad. Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar got to their half-centuries while Faf du Plessis and Cameron Green played some explosive cameos to get their team to a good score. Their bowling attack worked wonders in that match with almost all the bowlers working in tandem and they will look to keep the momentum going here.

... MATCH DAY ...

The 2024 Indian T20 League has indeed been a wild ride, with players and teams smashing records and achieving feats that were once considered out of reach. It's been a season of jaw-dropping moments and incredible milestones. Match number 45 promises nothing less than sheer entertainment. The prestigious Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the highly anticipated clash between Gujarat and Bengaluru as the two teams face off for the first time in this edition. Gujarat, a team that started its journey with a bang a couple of years ago, made it to the finals for two consecutive times and even winning the title once, but this season, they're dealing with a lot of uncertainties and challenges. Plus, they had a tough loss against Delhi, nearly pulling off a huge chase of 225 but falling just shy. Truth be told, their bowlers have been underwhelming and surely the absence of the likes of Mohammed Shami has been felt in the pace attack. Mohit Sharma had a decent start to the season but after that, he has gone for plenty and worryingly, he bowled the most expensive spell of four overs in the history of this tournament. Sandeep Warrier did show some promise along with Noor Ahmad. Rashid Khan, after returning from an injury, has not been at his fullest potential with the ball. Gujarat’s batting too has faced a lot of inconsistencies with only Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and David Miller scoring runs regularly. And they will require their middle order that has been dauntingly below-par to step up as things are getting more serious for them as the competition progresses. Talking about Bengaluru, when no team was successful in finding any solutions to the Hyderabad onslaught, it was the bottom-placed team with a solitary win that provided the template to the others and pulled off a sensational win over them. For them to qualify, well, realistically, it’s not possible as they will have to do a lot of math but more importantly, they’ll have to win all their remaining games and depend on the other teams too. Virat Kohli, the leading run-scorer of the tournament, continued with his form and notched up another brilliant half-century, displaying some breathtaking strokes, of course. Positive signs emerging for them as Rajat Patidar too has hit the stride and found form by striking two consecutive half-centuries, that too, with a mad strike rate. Well, batting hasn’t been their cause of concern as Dinesh Karthik has provided the much-needed finishing touches with the bat. It was the bowling attack that didn’t live up to the expectations but in the previous game, they did improve immensely. Karn Sharma and Cameron Green have been handy with the ball, but Mohammed Siraj and Lockie Ferguson are going through an arid run with the ball. But the way teams have been scoring mammoth totals, for Bengaluru to keep Hyderabad tied up for runs, surely must’ve sent positive waves to the camp. Will Bengaluru continue to compound on the win or will Gujarat strike a strong comeback and get those two much-needed points? Which team are you supporting in this clash?
