Right then, that's all we have from this entertaining game that ebbed and flowed, but it was Mumbai who emerged victorious and are still mathematically alive in the tournament. The 2024 Indian T20 League is off to an exciting start this week, and if the first game is any indication, we are in for a thrilling ride. Next up on Tuesday, the 7th of May, Delhi will square off against Rajasthan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Rishabh Pant's squad will be determined to return to winning ways, while Sanju Samson and his team will be eager to reclaim the top spot from Kolkata. The game will commence at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as always, our build-up will begin much sooner. See you then. Cheers!

Suryakumar Yadav is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant ton under pressure. He reflects on his performance, highlighting the challenge of fielding and batting for extended periods after a long gap since December 14th. Despite fatigue, he recognized the importance of anchoring the innings after Mumbai lost early wickets. Yadav credits his traditional shot-making, honed through Mumbai's cricketing culture, for his success in navigating the seam movement. He emphasizes maintaining intent throughout his innings, expressing confidence that as the game progressed, he would have accelerated similarly to his performance in this match.

The captain of Mumbai, Hardik Pandya says that they want to focus on playing good cricket. Feels that they gave 10-15 runs more but the batting was excellent. Shares that he likes bowling in good areas and see how the wicket behaves. Tells that Piyush Chawla took wickets of batters who can take the game away. Reckons that in T20s, consistency is more important than change-ups. Adds that Chawla was consistent and he was rewarded for it. Mentions that Suryakumar Yadav was unbelievable and feels that more than him getting runs, him putting so much pressure on bowlers results in loose balls. Ends by saying that they are lucky to have Suryakumar in the side.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

Tilak Varma of Mumbai reflects on their approach, emphasizing the return to basics and playing with a straight bat, especially with Suryakumar Yadav's presence, which kept them competitive. Varma admits being surprised by Yadav's aggressive approach against Jansen, deviating from their planned strategy. He stresses the importance of readiness for diverse pitch conditions. Varma highlights his focus on adapting to different game situations and exploring scoring opportunities. Expressing support for Yadav's century bid, Varma dismisses concerns about Yadav's injury, indicating confidence in his teammate's fitness.

Hyderabad's captain, Pat Cummins, reflects on the innings, noting they might be a couple of runs short. He acknowledges the challenging conditions in the initial overs, crediting Sunny's presence for their final score of 170. Despite contemplating the impact of a fast bowler, Cummins maintains uncertainty in T20 cricket outcomes. He highlights SKY's performance, emphasizing its pivotal role in altering the game's dynamics. Looking ahead, Cummins hopes for thrilling moments in future matches, embracing the unpredictable nature of the sport.

Earlier in the game, after inserting Hyderabad into bat, the Mumbai bowlers did not get the reward they deserved early on but did well not to allow the explosive Hyderabad opening pair to get away. It was an unusual struggle for Abhishek Sharma, but Travis Head got going as he always does. Head got a couple of reprieves off the bowling of the debutant, Anshul Kamboj, once when he was bowled off a no ball and later when he was dropped. However, he could not make the most of those lives, and Nitish Kumar Reddy perished soon after. Piyush Chawla and Hardik Pandya helped Mumbai dominate the middle phase, picking up three wickets each. Despite reducing Hyderabad to 136-8, Mumbai let them off the hook as Pat Cummins breathed life into his side's innings and took them to 173 with an unbeaten 35-run knock.

Having reduced Mumbai to 31-3, Hyderabad had a real shot at taking home those two points and moving out of the mid-table muddle. However, they came up on the wrong side of a Suryakumar Yadav masterclass and just did not have enough runs on the board. Having scored 39 runs off the last three overs of their batting effort to finish with 173, Hyderabad had the momentum with them at the halfway mark. However, they could not translate that into their bowling effort in the first couple of overs as Bhuvshwar Kumar and Marco Jansen failed to control the swing. Jansen, Bhuvneshwar and Pat Cummins soon got into the groove and made the new ball talk to nip out Mumbai's top three inside the Powerplay. They had their tails up at that stage but just could not build on that start with the ball. Moreover, they failed to contain boundaries and slowly Suryakumar Yadav began to take the game away from them. Pat Cummins was left scrambling for a breakthrough but it never came as Suryakumar Yadav remained unbeaten on 102 and handed Hyderabad their 5th defeat of the season.

TAKE A BOW, SURYAKUMAR YADAV! Innings of the highest order by one of, if not the best in T20 cricket, and the Mumbai fans, who have endured a tough season, were treated to something really special. With this emphatic win, Mumbai lift themselves off the bottom of the standings. In their pursuit of 173 runs, Mumbai were off to a brisk start as they were helped by the extras bowled by the Hyderabad new ball bowlers. The start soon became a shaky one as their top three were blown away in real quick time. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma then got together to steady the ship for the hosts. Suryakumar played the aggressor role as he found boundaries with regularity, while Tilak was happy playing the second fiddle. Suryakumar notched up a 30-ball fifty and kept going despite the groin issue. He accelerated from fifty to hundred in just 21 balls and took Mumbai over the line through his second Indian T20 League ton.

SIX! Suryakumar Yadav finishes off in style and gets his HUNDRED! Full toss outside the line of the off stump and Suryakumar Yadav launches the inside out over the head of long off and the ball goes into the stands. Mumbai win the match and it is a world-class innings from Suryakumar Yadav.

Commentary

Can Bhuvneshwar Kumar work his magic with the new ball as he did in the last outing against Hyderabad?

Undeterred by the loss of his partner, Head persists, capitalizing on a couple of opportunities that come his way. His resilience sees him anchoring the innings for a significant period. Nevertheless, Mumbai's bowlers, led by their skipper Hardik Pandya and spinner Piyush Chawla, tighten their grip, striking at crucial intervals. Both Pandya and Chawla clinch three wickets each, dismantling Hyderabad's middle order. By the end of the 17th over, Hyderabad finds themselves struggling at 136/8, with their middle order faltering under the pressure imposed by Mumbai's bowling attack. However, a late onslaught from Cummins, with a brisk 35 runs off just 17 deliveries, injects some impetus into Hyderabad's innings, enabling them to garner crucial runs in the death overs.

After a shaky start and with wickets falling on regular intervals, Hyderabad have managed to finish on a high all thanks to their skipper Pat Cummins who finishes Not Out on 35 runs. Hyderabad have put up a first-inning score of 173 runs and have asked Mumbai to chase a target of 174.  As the first innings draws to a close, Hyderabad concludes their innings with a total of 173/8 on the scoreboard. The late surge provided by their skipper, Pat Cummins, proves crucial in bolstering their total. Despite this, Mumbai's performance leaves them content, particularly with their bowling effort. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Hyderabad sets off confidently, laying a solid foundation during the powerplay overs. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma forge a promising 56-run partnership at the top of the order. However, Sharma struggles to find his rhythm and is eventually dismissed by the relentless Jasprit Bumrah.

A couple of runs then to end the innings! This is on a length, outside off, Pat Cummins reaches out, clears his front leg and hacks it to the left of long on for a couple of runs. 17 runs off the over and Hyderabad end up with 173 on the board.

19.54

FOUR! How did Cummins get it there? Invaluable runs from the Hyderabad skipper. Nails the yorker, tailing in, on middle and leg, Pat Cummins gets his bat down in time and clears his front leg to squeeze it towards deep backward square leg fence for a boundary.

19.46

SIX! Just over! In the slot, outside off, Pat Cummins does not miss out as he swings through the line and lofts it towards long off. Tim David isn't at the fence and he is a few yards in. The ball sails over his head for a maximum.

19.32

Misfield! Keeps it full and near the batter's crease, on off, Pat Cummins jams it out towards backward point where a fumble results in Cummins coming back for the run. The throw towards the batting end is wayward but it is backed up well. Two runs off it then.

19.21

Pitches it right up, outside off, Sanvir Singh dabs it wide of backward point and rotates the strike.

19.11

Length delivery, outside off, Pat Cummins has a swipe across the line but gets it off the bottom part of the bat to deep mid-wicket for a single.

18.51

Angling in, full and on middle and leg, Sanvir Singh clips it through mid-wicket for one more run.

18.41

Another yorker nailed to perfection, on middle, Pat Cummins backs away and does extremely well to get bat on it. Steers it wide of backward point for one.

18.30

Oh my! How did that miss the off pole? A searing yorker near the base of the off-stump with an upright seam, Pat Cummins is late to get his bat down as the ball zips through and scoots past the off stump.

18.24

FOUR! Expertly played! At 121.5 kph, fuller and width on offer on off, Pat Cummins gets low to make the connection. Gets done by the lack of pace but adjusts well to glide it to the left of short third for a boundary.

17.51

Slower and on a short of a good length, wide on off, Pat Cummins punches it down to long off and gets to the other end.

17.41

17.32

Length delivery, outside off, Sanvir Singh swats it wide of deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs.

17.34nb

NO BALL! Oh, no! Nuwan Thushara has gotten it horribly wrong! Thushara loses the grip of the ball and ends up directing a beamer at the batter, chest height, Pat Cummins does well to get bat on it and manages to get it over short fine leg. Jasprit Bumrah gives it a chase and cuts it off. Three runs taken. Free Hit coming up.

17.21

At 120.3 kph, fuller and outside off, Sanvir Singh knocks it off the toe-end of the bat down to long off for a single.

17.11

Takes pace off straight away and goes full, near the tramline on off, Pat Cummins reaches out and pushes it to deep point for one.

OUT! A big, big shout for LBW and up goes the finger. This looks dead straight but Abdul Samad takes the review after having a word with his skipper at the other end. This one goes straight, on a nagging length, on middle, it is slower as well, Abdul Samad makes the mistake of playing across the line and gets beaten in the flight too. He plays for the ball turning away from him but the ball sneaks past the inside edge and raps Samad on the front pad. The Ball Tracking shows three reds as it hits the leg stump and Samad will have to continue walking. Hyderabad have now lost both their reviews.

16.61wd

WIDE! Fires it in, shorter in length, but it goes beyond the wide guideline on off, Abdul Samad reaches out to cut but misses. Wide called.

16.51

Dishes out another googly but it is a bit too short, on middle, Pat Cummins waits on the back foot and whips it in front of deep square leg for a run.

16.41

Slips in the googly, slower through the air and the length is pulled back a touch, on off, Abdul Samad slogs it off the inner half of the bat to deep mid-wicket for one.

16.31

Keeps it full and on middle, Pat Cummins turns this one in front of square on the leg side and rotates the strike.

Despite a strong performance from their bowlers, who set the game up nicely by restricting Kolkata to a manageable total, Mumbai's batters failed to capitalize. Suryakumar Yadav stood out but lacked support during the chase of 170 runs, leading to Mumbai's downfall. The lack of partnerships hurt them big time against Kolkata, and as they look to return to winning ways, Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma will have a crucial role to play. In his first season as Mumbai's captain, Hardik Pandya has not been able to find his mojo with the bat but seems to be slowly getting into the rhythm with the ball. Jasprit Bumrah has been the standout in the bowling department, but the runs have leaked from the other end. The onus will be on Gerald Coetzee, Nuwan Thushara, and Piyush Chawla to complement Bumrah and alleviate the bowling woes. In contrast, Hyderabad staged a remarkable comeback victory against Rajasthan in their previous outing. Despite early setbacks while batting, a rescue act from Nitish Kumar Reddy and a late flourish from Heinrich Klaasen propelled them to a formidable total of 201. Bhuvneshwar Kumar's vintage display with the new ball set the tone, with his heroics in the final over securing a thrilling win. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have been instrumental in setting the tone up front, while Heinrich Klaasen has also played his part. Amidst the array of big names, Nitish Kumar Reddy has emerged, displaying a level of maturity beyond his years. On the bowling front, Pat Cummins and T Natarajan have hunted in pairs, picking 27 wickets among them. With Bhuvneshwar Kumar nearing his best form, these are good signs for Hyderabad for the remainder of the tournament. It was a six-hitting fest when these two sides met earlier in the season in Hyderabad, with the Men in Orange and Black scoring the then-highest T20 team score. Will Hyderabad do the double? We shall find out.
