Right then, that is it from this absolute run-fest where Bengaluru stays alive but it is the end of the road for Punjab. Next up in the Indian T20 League is another crucial game in the context of the playoffs as Chennai takes on Gujarat. That game will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the match. Until then, cheers and goodbye!

Virat Kohli is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his stunning knock. He says that for him it is quality over quantity and it works for him. Adds that it allows you to practice less but keep your mind fresh. Tells that he is a guy who looks to adapt to conditions and always improves his game. Mentions that he has played the slog-sweep a lot in this competition, and it is a shot that he played a lot earlier in his playing days and now it is allowing him to also play on the back foot. Says that you have to be honest with yourself in a long tournament, and they were not good enough in the first half of the game. Further adds that the bowling performance against Kolkata was the turning point for them but still a couple of results need to go their way which is not ideal and you always think what if they started playing like this a few games earlier.

Faf du Plessis, the victorious skipper of Bengaluru says that it was a really good game. Adds that they scored over 240 after losing the toss and it’s really pleasing. Mentions that they had good conversations through the middle of the season and wanted to work on the areas they lacked. Shares that they started getting more aggressive and changed a few players in the bowling department. Adds that now they have 6-7 options in the bowling. States that they started finding a way to turn it around as the players wanted to show their real character. Ends by sharing that they want to focus on themselves and that they are a dangerous team for the rest of the tournament.

Sam Curran, the captain of Punjab says that the tournament was frustrating and disappointing. Adds that they had some good stuff but they lost close matches and had a lot to learn. Shares that they knew Shikhar Dhawan wasn’t going to be available because of injury. Mentions that they are gutted but will come back stronger next year. Says that it was fun to lead the side but would have loved wins in a few more games. Informs that they will hope to do well in the last two matches and give fans something to cheer on. Ends by sharing that the ups and downs have been tough but they need to support each other and keep learning and keep coming back stronger.

Presentation Time...

Swapnil Singh is up for a quick chat. He says that he enjoyed it a lot and adds that the pressure is less as all the bowlers are taken for runs. Shares that he was well prepared mentally for it. States that the team had a meeting after the first half of the season and decided to use the spinners more and things are working well for them. Shares that they are on a roll as they plan well against the opponents. Ends by saying that they are trying to keep it simple and taking one game at a time.

Earlier in the game, Bengaluru posted the highest T20 total on this ground courtesy of an exceptional knock of 92 from Virat Kohli along with a fine fifty from Rajat Patidar. Cameron Green and Dinesh Karthik also played decent cameos towards the end. Harshal Patel picked up three wickets with all of them coming in the last over. Debutant Vidwath Kaverappa got a couple of scalps, while Sam Curran and Arshdeep Singh chipped in with one each. However, they only have themselves to blame as they dropped Kohli and Patidar on zero which cost them dearly. While chasing, Punjab started well with Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw, but the middle order failed miserably.

Bengaluru, on the other hand, will be pretty pleased with their bowling effort. Swapnil Singh got them the early breakthrough in the first over but they couldn't capitalize after that and leaked a lot of runs in the Powerplay before Lockie Ferguson getting rid of Jonny Bairstow. In the middle overs, Karn Sharma was brilliant along with Swapnil and ran through the middle order of Punjab like it was nothing as they shared four wickets equally. Mohammed Siraj came back and cleaned up the tail to wrap up the victory for his team. Bengaluru are on a roll and they still have a chance to qualify for the playoffs.

Punjab needed a quick-fire start but they suffered an early blow as Prabhsimran Singh went back in the first over after playing a few lusty blows. However, after that, Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw managed to keep up with the asking rate and went full attacking mode. They managed to score 75 in the Powerplay but lost Bairstow in the process as well. Rossouw continued to attack from one side and notched up a fine half-century but after getting hit on his throat perished on the very next ball. After that, Punjab suffered a bit of a collapse as their middle order failed to make any sort of impact. Only Shashank Singh was able to score a few and play a cameo, while skipper Sam Curran tried to add a few but that was never going to be enough as they had to face a defeat by a huge margin of 60 runs.

BENGALURU ELIMINATES PUNJAB! Yet another disappointing season for the home side as they get knocked out with their second loss in a row. However, it is joy on the other side as Bengaluru extends their winning streak to four games and keeps their hopes alive with a dominating victory.

Welcome back. The umpires and players from both sides return to the ground. Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh stride out to open for Punjab. It will be Swapnil Singh to begin the proceedings with the ball for Bengaluru. Also, Yash Dayal comes in as the impact player sub for Bengaluru in place of Rajat Patidar. Here we go!

...THE RUN CHASE...

Right then, Punjab need to chase a mammoth score of 242 to keep their hopes alive for the playoffs. Can they do it or will Bengaluru make it four out of four? We shall find out soon. Join us for the second essay in a bit.

The man of the moment, Virat Kohli is up for a chat. He says that it was important to keep his strike rate up through the innings. Adds that it was a tricky phase when Patidar got out and the rain and hail came down. Tells that they needed time to settle in but once Green and him did that, they knew they had to go all out attack. Mentions that he thought 230-plus would be a good total here and they have managed to get more than that so they are happy. Says that their bowling has been good in the last few games and that gives them a lot of confidence as well. Praises debutant Kaverappa and says that he has a bit is swing but it is hard to judge someone based on just one game and once it stopped swinging, the tried to take him on as well.

For Punjab, the bowlers had a poor outing and were taken to the cleaners. The debutant for Punjab, Vidhwath Kaverappa, was the best bowler for his side with 2 wickets in the powerplay. Harshal Patel bowled an excellent final over and gave away just three runs in the final over, picking 3 wickets. Bengaluru were on course to go past 250 but the final over did not allow them to do so. The wicket is good and the pitch is a belter. Punjab batters did not turn up in their last game and will be expected to show some fight tonight.

A brilliant batting effort from Bengaluru has taken their score to 241 for 7 in their 20 overs. Having been sent into bat first, Bengaluru lost Faf du Plessis and Will Jacks inside the powerplay, but Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar joined hands and added 76 runs for the third wicket quickly. Patidar departed for a brisk 55 while Kohli carried on and made a sublime 92 off 47. Cameron Green provided the finishing touches with 46 off just 27 and took his side to a terrific score.

...THE RUN CHASE...

We are back! The players are making their way out to the middle now. Virat Kohli and Cameron Green will resume the batting for Bengaluru. Liam Livingstone will start proceedings after the rain delay. Let's go...

UPDATE - 8.49 pm IST (3.19 pm GMT) - Great news folks! The rain has stopped and the ground staff are working hard to prepare the ground. We also have a resumption time as the match will restart at 8.55 pm IST (3.25 pm GMT).

UPDATE - 8.34 pm IST (3.04 pm GMT) - Some more bad news is coming from Dharamshala as along with the rain, there is a bit of a hailstorm going on as well. This does not help any of the teams as both of them need the two points to stay alive in the tournament. We can only hope that the weather gets clear and we can see more action on the field. Stick with us for more news.

Oh..no! Cameron Green will have to wait to face his first ball as the drizzle has got a bit heavier now. The umpires ask for the covers to be on and give marching orders to the players. Hopefully, this is just a passing shower and we can get back sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for further updates.

We are all set for play to begin in this crunch game. The umpires have made their way to the middle followed by the players of Punjab. It is the usual duo of Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli right at the top for Bengaluru. For Punjab, debutant Vidwath Kaverappa will open the attack with the ball. Let's play...

Faf du Plessis, the captain of Bengaluru says that they would have bowled first as well. Adds that it has been a good turnaround for them and they just need to focus on how they want to play and execute plans on the field. Informs that they have made one change as Glenn Maxwell goes out for Lockie Ferguson.

Sam Curran, the Punjab skipper, wins the toss and says they will bowl first. Adds that there will be a bit for the bowlers early on and they will try to put Bengaluru under pressure. Mentions that the side they are going in with tonight will look to take wickets early on. Says that they need to win all the games from here on and they are relishing this pressure situation. Adds that losing is not ideal but they are playing well and they will be looking to win the key moments today. Informs that Kagiso Rabada misses out and Liam Livingstone comes in for him.

Impact Players for Bengaluru - Yash Dayal, Anuj Rawat, Suyash Prabhudessai, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Mayank Dagar.

Bengaluru (Playing XI) - Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis (C), Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar, Mahipal Lomror, Cameron Green, Dinesh Karthik (WK), Swapnil Singh, Karn Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Lockie Ferguson (In place of Glenn Maxwell).

TOSS - The coin lands in favour of Sam Curran and Punjab have elected to BOWL first.

Bengaluru, on the flip side, have found some momentum lately and are coming off a hat-trick of wins. They are currently at number 7 in the table and have an outside chance of making it into the top four. In their previous game against Gujarat, the bowling did a fine job and kept Gujarat to a meager score of 147. Their openers gave a blazing start, making more than 90 runs inside the power-play. Their middle order crumbled and Bengaluru were reduced from 92 for 1 to 117 for 6. Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli made the majority of runs while Dinesh Karthik held his nerve and took his side home with six overs to spare.  Bengaluru are the visiting side but look like the favorites going into the encounter. Let’s see who comes out on top and keeps their hopes alive for the knockouts. Toss and team news in a bit. Stay tuned!

Hello and a warm welcome to Match 58 in the Indian T20 League. Punjab are taking on Bengaluru at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. It’s the clash of number seven versus eight in the points table and promises to be a mouth-watering affair. Punjab have won two of their last three games and found some form in recent times. The home side, however, suffered a loss against Chennai in their previous game and derailed their campaign. Bowling first, Punjab kept Chennai to a par score of 167 with Rahul Chahar and Harshal Patel being the standout bowlers. The batters did not turn up and Punjab lost the game by 28 runs. They are currently number 8 in the table and their chances of going forward look grim.

... MATCHDAY ...

As the Indian T20 League 2024 heads towards its climax, the points table is all knotted up. Two teams are locked at the top with 16 points apiece, while the race for the third and fourth spots is heating up with three teams all tied at 12 points. Amidst the serene beauty of Dharamsala's snowcapped peaks and hills, the stage is set for a pivotal encounter as Punjab plays host to Bengaluru in match number 58. With all their remaining games being must-win situations, both teams are feeling the pressure. For Punjab, there's an added motivation to avenge their earlier loss to Bengaluru this season. Both teams find themselves neck and neck in terms of points, with an equal number of wins and defeats. However, Bengaluru's superior net run rate edges them ahead of the hosts in the standings. Punjab's season has been a mixed bag, marked by moments of promise but ultimately falling short when it mattered most. Their recent loss to Chennai would have stung particularly hard, as they failed to capitalize on a manageable target of 168. The batting lineup crumbled under pressure, with only Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh showing resilience while the rest struggled to make an impact. This defeat serves as a stark reminder for Punjab of the areas they need to address if they aim to turn their season around and make a late surge up the table. Jonny Bairstow seemed to be finding his groove recently, but unfortunately, his bat has gone a bit quiet in the last few games. Also, Punjab is really feeling the absence of Shikhar Dhawan due to injury, as his experience and firepower at the top of the order set the tone well for the side while batting. However, their bowling unit has managed to hold its own, with Rahul Chahar and Arshdeep Singh leading the charge alongside the likes of Harshal Patel and Kagiso Rabada. Yet, there's a pressing need to bolster their pace attack and tighten the screws in crucial moments of the game. While Bengaluru seems to be hitting its peak at just the right moment. While it's up for debate whether it's a tad too late in the season, there's no denying the positive momentum they've built by winning their last three games on the trot. Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis have been delivering some exceptional starts for Bengaluru, setting strong platforms for the team. Especially Virat Kohli, who is also the leading run-getter of the season so far and has already scored 4 fifties and a sensational ton. His consistency has been remarkable, graced with some handsome cricketing strokes of course. The likes of Will Jacks and Cameron Green have been entrusted with the task of carrying the momentum forward with the bat. Additionally, Rajat Patidar, who seemed out of touch earlier in the season, has now found his form, providing valuable contributions. However, the inconsistency of Glenn Maxwell remains a concern, although everyone knows the destructive potential he holds on any given day. So, while there might be a few areas to address, Bengaluru's batting lineup indeed packs a punch, capable of turning the game on its head, with Dinesh Karthik providing the finishing touches with his lightning-quick strike rate. While their bowling department has shown signs of improvement, there's still room for growth. Mohammed Siraj, in particular, has had a forgettable season with the ball and will be eager to rediscover his rhythm before the crucial phase. Karn Sharma and Swapnil Singh have been decent in their roles as spinners, who can strike a few lusty blows with the bat as well. Once the bowling unit collectively hits its stride, Bengaluru will undoubtedly emerge as an unstoppable force to reckon with in the tournament. Bengaluru's victory against Punjab earlier in the tournament was a significant one, being the only team they managed to defeat in the first month of this edition. This match carries added significance as both teams aim to solidify their positions in the points table. Who do you think has an edge here?
