Commentary

Right then, that is it from this exciting match where Rajasthan registered their first win over Lucknow. Another power-packed match continues in the Indian T20 League where Mumbai take on Gujarat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. You can simply switch tabs to enjoy the live coverage of that game. Until then, Cheers and goodbye!

Sanju Samson the skipper of Rajasthan is also the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his unbeaten 82 runs. He says he enjoyed it and it feels good to end on the winning side. Adds that this time he has been given a different role and Sangakkara has given him some suggestions and playing some International ODI's has helped him do well. Mentions that he is a batter who reacts to the ball and it helps him maintain the shape and its all about timing the ball. Appreciates Sandeep Sharma and says that those 3 overs were crucial and everybody else chipped in well and stuck to their plans.

KL Rahul the captain of Lucknow says that the target was not a lot but was just 10 runs over par and they bowled well in patches which can happen in the first game. Adds that they will learn from that and get better going forward. Mentions that Mohsin Khan wasn't completely fit last season and they missed him but he came back well and Naveen-ul-Haq swung the ball and played a crucial role for the side up front in that powerplay. Appreciates the side for coming back from 3 down to getting so close and says that it is just the first game and they will try to build from this and get stronger going ahead. Adds that Justin Langer has brought a lot of calmness to the side and there is a lot to learn from him and is happy to have him on the side. He concludes that when he gets runs, it always feels good but it gets better if the team wins the game and he will look to contribute and lead the team to a title.

Presentation Time...

Ravichandran Ashwin is up for a quick chat. He says that it was a wicket of two halves as it was tacky in the first half and they felt they were 10 runs short. Adds that he went for 12 runs in his first over, but he bowls in different stages of the game which requires a different mindset. Tells that he is in a good space mentally and physically and is trying to enjoy his cricket. Mentions that he prepares for different batters, like in this match, he had plans for Poora and Stoinis. Praises Sandeep Sharma for his bowling and says that he has been an unsung hero always doing the dirty job for the team. Further adds that Sandeep Sharma is a character and has shown a lot of fight which you need in the T20 format. Ends by saying that as two bouncers are allowed now, Boult and Nandre Burger will get a taste of this tournament as it goes on.

Earlier in the game, Sanju Samson won the toss and opted to bat first. Rajasthan started quickly as Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal got out of the blocks quickly but soon they both got out. Skipper Samson and Riyan Parag added a 90-plus stand to take the home side into a strong position and Samson stayed on till the end to take his side close to 200 runs. With the ball, Lucknow pacers were on the expensive side and Mohsin Khan in particular got a bit of stick. They also dropped a couple of catches but managed to finish decently with the ball.

Rajasthan, on the other hand, will be pretty happy with their bowling effort. Trent Boult as usually set the tone with a couple of crucial early wickets, and Nandre Burger followed it up with another to take control of the game. They did allow their opponents to build up a big partnership in the middle that made the game a bit more interesting, but their death-over specialist, Sandeep Sharma was absolutely sensational keeping the runs in check and also getting the all-important wicket of KL Rahul to help them get the two points. The spin twin of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal also picked up a wicket each to cap off an excellent performance.

Lucknow got off to the worst possible start losing three wickets inside the Powerplay that put them on the back foot in this chase. KL Rahul held one end solidly and Deepak Hooda came out with a positive intent and played a few lusty blows to keep the runs flowing. However, he too was dismissed after the field restrictions were lifted. Then came the partnership between the skipper and Nicholas Pooran that took them out of trouble and kept them in this game. Both looked really good out there and were keeping up with the asking rate as well. Rahul notched up his fifty but could not stay much longer and that wicket changed the momentum once again. Pooran also registered his half-century but just did not have enough to get them home as they ultimately fell short by 20 runs.

RAJASTHAN START THEIR CAMPAIGN WITH A COMFORTABLE WIN! The margin of victory does not reflect how close this game was at one stage, but some brilliant death bowling from Sandeep Sharma and the others who held their nerve to get their side over the line. Lucknow will be a bit disappointed as they were in this chase till the last five overs but just ran out of gas in the end.

Commentary

We are back with the chase! The two umpires make their way into the middle. The Rajasthan team is seen in a huddle alongside the ropes as they stride out to take the field. It will be the skipper of Lucknow, KL Rahul along with Quinton de Kock to open the innings for Lucknow. Nandre Burger is brought in as an impact player for Rajasthan replacing Shimron Hetmyer.  Trent Boult has the new ball and will start the proceedings for Rajasthan. Here we go..

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Lucknow, made an impressive start with the ball as Naveen-ul-Haq struck early, dismissing the dangerous Jos Buttler in his very first over. Despite leaking a few boundaries after the initial breakthrough, Mohsin Khan maintained his composure and crucially removed Yashasvi Jaiswal, putting a brake on Rajasthan's momentum. However, a resilient third-wicket partnership threatened to shift the game in Rajasthan's favour, until Naveen-ul-Haq returned to the attack and dismantled it. Ravi Bishnoi then joined the fray, adding another wicket to Lucknow's tally in their bid to wrest control of the match. Employing tighter lines and disciplined bowling, Lucknow's bowlers successfully stemmed the flow of runs, restricting Rajasthan to 193 runs. This was particularly commendable considering Rajasthan's innings appeared poised to surpass the 200-run mark at one stage. Naveen-ul-Haq remains the pick of the bowler for his crucial two wickets. With 194 runs required for victory, the stage is set for an exhilarating chase by Lucknow. Possessing a formidable batting lineup, Lucknow has the potential to come out all guns blazing and mount a serious challenge to chase down the target. However, Rajasthan, buoyed by their strong total and eager to secure their first win of the season, will be determined to put up a formidable defence. Stick around as the exciting second innings will follow in a bit.

Riyan Parag is down for a chat. He says that his main goal was to take it deep as the wicket was keeping low and he had to accelerate a bit earlier than Sanju. Adds that he keeps things simple and he is trying to do what he wants to do in practice as well. Mentions that he does prefer batting at number 4 and informs that the coach was pretty clear that he was going to bat at that number and that helped him prepare better.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Rajasthan began their innings cautiously, negotiating the opening over with vigilance. However, their momentum was disrupted early on as Jos Buttler, despite striking a couple of powerful shots, was dismissed in the second over. Undeterred by the setback, skipper Sanju Samson partnered with Yashasvi Jaiswal, exhibiting calculated aggression to elevate the scoring rate. Unfortunately for Rajasthan, Jaiswal departed just before the conclusion of the powerplay, leaving the team at a respectable 54 runs for the loss of 2 wickets at the end of six overs. Riyan Parag then stepped up to the plate, joining forces with skipper Sanju Samson to forge a formidable 93-run partnership which was broken with the dismissal of Riyan Parag. Their efforts propelled the team to a commanding total of 143 runs by the end of the 15th over, providing a platform from which Rajasthan could unleash their full attacking prowess in the remaining overs. Despite Shimron Hetmyer failing to contribute, Dhruv Jurel and Sanju Samson managed to add 50 runs in the last 5 overs to take the side to a daunting total of 193 runs.

A splendid batting display by skipper Sanju Samson staying unbeaten at 82 runs has propelled Rajasthan to a formidable total of 193 runs on the scoreboard at the conclusion of the first innings.

18.21wd

16.52

Flatter one on the pads, Dhruv Jurel works it nicely off the pads and in between square leg and mid-wicket for a couple of runs to get off the mark.

Ravi Bishnoi bowls this one quick and flat again and pushes it just across the off stump, Hetmyer leans on to block and the ball zips past the outside edge and KL Rahul manages to pouch is somehow. We are all set for the game to begin! The two umpires are out in the middle in rather some stylish gear. The Lucknow players can be seen in a huddle before taking their places on the field. It will be the destructive duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler to open the innings for Rajasthan. Mohsin Khan has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play...

Jos Buttler is down for a quick chat. Jos says that he has been with Rajasthan for a while and tries to help out when he can and he is more than happy to do so. Adds that Avesh Khan has settled into the team well and it is a big day for him to play against his former team. On Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos says that he has had a rapid rise and he is coming off a fantastic Test series and is happy for him. Mentions that Rovman Powell has been in great form for West Indies and it will be great if him and Hetmeyer can form a partnership in the middle order.

KL Rahul the skipper of Lucknow says they would have batted first as well. Adds that the wicket looks good and hopefully won't change much. Mentions that he is happy to be back in the field and looks to try and do well for the side. Adds that they have the same combination as the previous year and Quinton de Kock, Nicholas Pooran, Marcus Stoinis and Naveen-ul-Haq are the four overseas players in the playing XI. Concludes that everybody will get their chances going ahead and there are some really exciting players in the team who will be eager to do well.

Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan says that he was just looking at the coin as it seemed like a new one and informs that they will BAT first. Adds that they were prepared to do both but have gone for a different combination. Adds that they have done really well as a team in the last 10 months and a few of the young players have gone on to become superstars. Also adds that Riyan Parag will fill the number 4 role and they have 3 overseas players to start with and Rovman Powell might come in as the Impact Player but it is quite open.

Impact players nominated by Lucknow - Deepak Hooda, Mayank Yadav, Amit Mishra, Prerak Mankad, Krishnappa Gowtham.

Lucknow (Playing XI) - KL Rahul (C), Quinton de Kock (WK), Devdutt Padikkal, Ayush Badoni, Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, Krunal Pandya, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan, Naveen-ul-Haq, Yash Thakur.

Impact players nominated by Rajasthan -  Rovman Powell, Nandre Burger, Tanush Kotian, Shubham Dubey, Kuldeep Sen.

Rajasthan (Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson (C)(WK), Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Trent Boult, Avesh Khan, Sandeep Sharma, Yuzvendra Chahal.

TOSS - Rajasthan win the coin flip and opt to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Samuel Badree is pitchside. He starts by saying that this venue has historically been a fortress for Rajasthan but last season wasn't the same. Adds that it is 70 meters square on one side and 62 meters on the other side and it is 79 meters straight. Matthew Hayden joins him and says that the pitch is quite brown and there isn't much grass either. Reckons that spin will play its role and the batters can get off to a good start as there won't be much swing or seam.

Devdutt Padikkal is seen receiving his Lucknow cap from KL Rahul and is set to make his debut for Lucknow.

Lucknow, led by their skipper KL Rahul, who returns to the side after an unfortunate mid-season injury in the previous season, injects a renewed sense of vigour into the team. KL Rahul's exceptional form adds an extra layer of excitement to their campaign. Rajasthan, under the leadership of the dynamic Sanju Samson, have strategically retained the nucleus of their previous squad during the auction, bolstering it further with impactful additions. The arrival of Rovman Powell and Tom Kohler-Cadmore injects additional firepower into an already formidable batting lineup teeming with talent from both Indian and overseas players. Furthermore, the acquisition of South African pace sensation Nandre Burger adds a lethal edge to their bowling arsenal, complementing the experienced spearhead, Trent Boult. ... MATCH DAY ...

It is now time for match number 4 of the 2024 Indian T20 League as Rajasthan host Lucknow at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. With the competition in the Indian T20 League becoming increasingly fierce with each passing season, both teams will be eager to hit the ground running and secure a victory in their opening match. Rajasthan narrowly missed out on a playoff berth last season, finishing fifth. Retaining overseas assets Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, and Donovan Ferreira, Rajasthan reinforced their batting prowess with the addition of Rovman Powell and Tom Kohler-Cadmore. On the bowling front, Trent Boult will continue to spearhead the pace attack, and they have roped in Nandre Burger to support the Kiwi left-arm pacer. The inaugural winners of the Indian T20 League will be without the services of Aussie leggie Adam Zampa, who has opted out due to personal reasons. It should not be that big an issue, as the spin department looks pretty much settled with the presence of Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin and the arrival of Tanush Kotian, named as Zampa's replacement. Sanju Samson will be in charge for another year and will lead a young Indian batting group comprising Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel, with Jaiswal and Jurel coming off stellar performances for India, albeit in a different format. Coming to the domestic pace talent, the injured Prasidh Krishna will be a big miss, but it has opened the doors for Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Sen, and Sandeep Sharma. On the flip side, despite facing the setback of losing their captain midway through the tournament, Lucknow managed to secure a spot in the playoffs. However, their journey ended prematurely yet again in the Eliminator for the second consecutive season. Lucknow will be buoyed by the return of their skipper, KL Rahul, who sustained a hip flexor injury during the match against Bengaluru last year, forcing him out of the remainder of the tournament. With Justin Langer assuming the role of Head Coach, Lucknow have demonstrated confidence in their domestic talent. They have retained Ravi Bishnoi and Amit Mishra from the spin department while adding more pace to their arsenal with the inclusion of Shivam Mavi to go with the retained duo of Yash Thakur and Mohsin Khan. It was not a surprise that they opted to retain their stand-in skipper from the previous edition, Krunal Pandya, and his all-rounder compatriot, Krishnappa Gowtham. They have infused youth in the form of Devdutt Padikkal into batting resources, which also consist of Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda. Lucknow have kept faith in the overseas stalwarts Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock, Kyle Mayers, and Naveen-ul-Haq, who will be primed to deliver once more. Strengthening their roster, the Lucknow think tank strategically acquired Ashton Turner, David Willey, and West Indies pace sensation Shamar Joseph at the auction, fortifying both the batting and bowling departments. Although Willey is set to miss the initial stages of the competition, the KL Rahul-led unit has enough resources to fill the void. Who will seize victory in their opening fixture? The answer awaits as the action unfolds.
