Commentary

Right then, that was it from our coverage of this fiery encounter between Hyderabad and Lucknow where the home team exerted a lot of dominance over the visitors. With this result, Mumbai has been knocked out of this edition of the Indian T20 League. However, the excitement doesn't stop here. Join us back on Thursday, 9th May for the match between Punjab and Bengaluru in the beautiful stadium of Dharamsala. The first ball will be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT) but our coverage will start much earlier. Until then, goodbye and cheers!

Travis Head is the Player of the Match for his explosive knock of 89 runs in 30 deliveries. Shares that it was a lot of fun and it was nice that he and Abhishek Sharma were able to get the job done. States that he tries to get into positions early and react to the ball. Tells that they got ahead of the rate and felt like it was a good opportunity to maximize that. Mentions that he has been working on his game against spin and it was nice to be able to hit all around the park. Further adds that he has tried not to change what he has been doing over the past 12 months for Australia, which is to bat fearlessly. He says that they did not think about the NRR until the strategic break. Feels that he and Abhishek Sharma complement each other well and says that the way Abhishek bats against spin is second to none. Jokingly says that he would love to take this surface with him everywhere. Adds that the crowd was exceptional and it was good to get the win.

Pat Cummins is up for a chat. He says that the batting display was amazing. He mentions that the two guys are one of the best and they proved that in this game as well. Credits Abhishek Sharma for his incredible performance as well and says that it is difficult to stop him when he is in form. Says that Travis Head is a brilliant batter and that he can hit in the difficult areas of the middle of his blade. Reckons that the par score has gotten higher in this edition of the league. Ends by saying that he didn't expect such a birthday present before this game.

The Presentation ceremony…

One of the architects of Hyderabad's win, Abhishek Sharma is in for a chat. He starts by thanking the management for the faith shown in him and the freedom they have given him to express himself. Credits Travis Head for putting the bowlers under pressure at the start of the over, which makes his job easy. States that the bowlers told them that the wicket is getting better. Feels that the hard work put in before the tournament is showing. Ends by thanking his father, Yuvraj Singh and Brian Lara for their support.

The captain of Lucknow, KL Rahul says that he is lost for words and he has no words to describe the batting they have just witnessed. Adds that everything seemed to be hitting the middle of their bats. Shares that pitch did not change much and the only way to stop batters coming in with this mindset is by picking wickets in the Powerplay, which they did not. Feels that they were 40-50 runs short. Further adds that Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni batted well to take them to 166.

Earlier in the innings, we saw Hyderabad make full use of the pitch in the initial phases of the game. They managed to take quick wickets and put Lucknow under pressure early. However, the pair of Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni made sure that the visitors managed to bounce back into the game. They dominated the slog overs and pushed their team’s total above 160 which looked like a competitive total. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the star of the bowling unit with his 2 wickets and an economy of just 3.00.

We are awestruck by the batting display that the two Men in Orange have just put up for everyone. It was a very good birthday gift for Pat Cummins as Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head sealed the game in under 10 overs. Hyderabad were off to a flier courtesy of the destructive pair of Head and Sharma. Both the batters didn’t allow any bowler to get any breathing room. We felt that 165 could be a par score on this pitch but the intent these two southpaws showed in this game was unreal. Both got to their half-centuries in under 20 balls each and they gave no chances to any bowler. Abhishek Sharma scored 75 runs in 28 balls while his partner scored 89 off just 30 deliveries. The boundaries never stopped coming off their bat. With this performance, they now climb over Chennai and also manage to improve their NRR by a lot which might help them down the road.

Lucknow bowled a decent first over but after the first one, all the bowlers were taken to the cleaners every time the batters got a chance. They were poor in the field, dropped some chances as well and that might have hurt them more. The shocking part is that KL Rahul didn’t opt for the option of the impact player. The bowlers did try their best but the batters were just too good and in the end, it was a tough defeat to face. Lucknow's NRR has taken a big hit and it might come back to haunt them in the later stages.

THE ORANGE ARMY ERUPTS IN A LOUD CHEER AS HYDERABAD HAVE GIVEN THEM A TREAT TO WATCH. THEY WIN THE GAME BY 10 WICKETS WITH 10.2 OVERS TO SPARE! The duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head had all the answers in this game and they finished the game in just 9.4 overs. It got over in a flash. Hyderabad now climb up to number 3 on the points table.

9.46

SIX! THAT'S IT! ALL OVER IN A FLASH! Abhishek Sharma with the winnings runs and the passionate Hyderabad crowd have been treated to the batting of the highest order! Yash Thakur hurls it on a back of a length, angling across the left-hander, outside off, Abhishek Sharma extends his arms and goes inside out as he smacks it with an angled bat over extra cover for a biggie. Hyderabad have cruised home with 10.2 overs to spare and all 10 wickets in hand!

9.31

The line stays the same from Thakur, near the tramline on off, on a good length, Travis Head is made to reach out and dabs it in front of cover. Calls Abhishek Sharma through for a quick single and Head makes it to the danger end.

9.22

At 119.1 kph, on a length, outside off, Travis Head fetches it from near the wide guideline and hits it back past the bowler for a couple of runs.

9.11

7.41

Fullish length, on off, Travis Head hits it along the ground to long off for a single.

7.36

SIX! THAT HAS GONE MANY A MILE! Not that full from Bishnoi, on middle and leg, Travis Head gets it in his arc and nails the slog sweep to deposit into the second tier towards deep mid-wicket for a biggie.

7.20

Pushes it through, flat and short, on off, Travis Head shapes up for the cut again but it skids through to zip past the bat.

You just cannot bowl there to Abhishek, rank hop, on middle, Abhishek Sharma waits for it and dispatches it with disdain over long on for half a dozen.

Commentary

Welcome back for the second essay. A slightly delayed start to Hyderabad's batting effort as one of the light towers went off, but it is slowly starting to turn back on. The players of Lucknow make their way out to the middle followed by the two Hyderabad openers. It will be the explosive opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head to open the innings for Hyderabad. Lucknow are starting with spin in the form of Krishnappa Gowtham, a match-up against the two Hyderabad southpaws. Away we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Right then, Lucknow have the momentum with them courtesy of the strong finish with the bat. The wicket is on the slower side, and if the dew does not arrive, Lucknow have the resources to defend this total. On the other hand, Hyderabad have a tricky task ahead on a surface that is on the slower side, and shot-making isn't as easy as some of the previous games held at this venue. It should be an interesting chase. Join us back in a bit.

Ayush Badoni is up for a chat. He says that the wicket was on the slower side and aimed to take it deep. He adds that he backed himself and didn't want to throw his wicket. He mentions that it is difficult to hit since ball one and he planned to find the gaps targeting the short boundary. Reckons that 165 is a good score if the dew doesn't come in.

As for Hyderabad, they were disciplined for the first 13 overs but let the pressure release thereafter, conceding 92 runs in the next 7 overs. Through Bhuvneshwar Kumar's twin blows in his first spell of three overs, Hyderabad had the desired start. Introduced inside the Powerplay, Shahbaz Ahmed too did a good job of keeping things tight. Overs 7-13 saw Hyderabad continue to keep a leash on the scoring rate and mix the pace up well, not allowing the Lucknow batters to gain any sort of momentum. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave away just 12 runs from his four overs, the rest just could not keep the pressure on towards the back end of the innings. Pat Cummins will feel that they gave 15-20 runs more than what they would have liked.

Lucknow finish on a high to end up with 165 runs on the board! It has been the Pooran-Badoni show that has helped the visitors post a total, which did not look possible at the 13th over mark. After opting to bat first, Lucknow had a far-from-ideal Powerplay, which saw them lose Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis. As a result, they could only manage 27 runs in that phase, Lucknow's lowest Powerplay score of the season. KL Rahul perished in his quest to break free while Krunal Pandya, sent in at number 4, looked good but gifted his wicket away while attempting a tight single. Ayush Badoni came out with intent on his mind and while the other experienced batters struggled, he seemed to bat on a different surface. He along with Nicholas Pooran, injected life into the Lucknow innings through their unbeaten 99-run stand. Pooran missed his fifty by 2 runs but Badoni got to his half-century off 28 balls, the fastest of his Indian T20 League career.

FOUR! BRILLIANT EFFORT THOUGH BY NITISH KUMAR REDDY! Pat Cummins bowls a full toss around the off pole. Nicholas Pooran gets low and slaps it over point. Nitish Kumar Reddy leaps in the air and tries to push it back into the field. The third umpire reviews the footage and finds the ball to be in contact with the cushions as Nitish parried it back. A boundary to end the innings and it was all about the partnership between Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran.

19.54

FOUR! CLASSY! Pat Cummins serves it on a good length outside off. Nicholas Pooran opens up the face of his bat and guides it past backward point. He finds the gap yet again and earns himself four more runs.

19.42

A bit short and outside off. Nicholas Pooran punches it to long off to run a couple of runs.

19.34

18.40

A wide yorker, nailed to perfection. Ayush Badoni fails to dig it out and the keeper collects it.

18.34

FOUR! SPLENDID! T Natarajan bowls a juicy full toss outside off. Ayush Badoni slaps it wide enough to clear the fielder at cover. The deep is vacant and the ball has a free run to the fence for another boundary.

18.22

On the shorter length and over off. Ayush Badoni pulls it to mid-wicket to run a brace.

18.14

FOUR! UP AND OVER! T Natarajan delivers it full and on off. Ayush Badoni lofts it over mid off and the ball runs off to the fence for four more runs. A much-needed boundary.

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma are once again making sure that their team is off to a flyer. 107 runs in the first six overs have put Hyderabad in the driving seat in this game. Both these batters are lethal for any bowling attack. KL Rahul should be thinking to break this partnership as soon as possible and will have to plan out his bowling carefully. The visitors are looking at a loss here and to get back in the game they need a few quick wickets.

Strategic break! This has been a far-from-ideal start with the bat for Lucknow. They just have not been able to get going but they will look to build on that previous over that went for 17 runs, to breathe life into the innings. Hyderabad have not given much away and have not allowed the Lucknow batters to have it their way. They will look to continue in the same fashion and continue doing what has worked for them, which is to take pace off and bowl stump-to-stump.

Ends up hitting it more straight than he would have liked and gets it off the upper half of the bat. It dips towards mid on where Sanvir Singh swoops in and dives in front. Gets his fingers underneath it and takes a superb catch.

We are all set to begin. The two umpires walk out to the middle. The fielders discuss last-moment plans and take their respective positions on the field. Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul are the opening batters for Lucknow. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been handed the new ball and is raring to go. Let's go...

The captain of Hyderabad, Pat Cummins says that they would have batted first as well. Tells that he is not too upset as they have also won while bowling first. Feels that the toss is not super important as the games here have been high-scoring. States that the competition is pretty tough and they need to keep winning till the end. Adds that winning this game is important. Shares that they have been a bit off in the past few games and will look to change that. Informs that Sanvir Singh comes in for Mayank Agarwal and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth makes his debut, replacing Marco Jansen.

The captain of Lucknow, KL Rahul says that they will bat first. Mentions that the surface looks good and they want to put some runs on the board. Adds that they will play it like any other game and mentions that it is important for them to hold their nerves to get control of the game. Also says that the first six overs will be crucial. Feels that home support makes a big difference but playing away games is about knowing the conditions. Says that Quinton de Kock comes in and Mohsin Khan misses out due to an injury along with a few other changes.

TOSS - KL Rahul calls it correctly and Lucknow have opted to BAT first.

PITCH REPORT - Sanjay Manjrekar and Matthew Hayden are near the deck. Manjrekar starts by informing that pitch number 2 will be used for this game, the same pitch where 277 runs were scored by Hyderabad against Mumbai. Tells that it is a center wicket, with 63 meters and 66 metres being the dimensions of the square boundaries and a 76-metre hit down the ground. Hayden says that the wicket is extremely hard and really dry. Adds that tiny cracks have opened up due to the heat. Opines that it does not look like a record-breaking surface and feels that the pacers will turn to their cutters in the middle phase of the game. Hayden ends by saying that the captain winning the toss will look to set a total.

On the other hand, Lucknow suffered a significant defeat against Kolkata in their last home game and now embark on a series of away matches for the remainder of the league stage. With Delhi's recent win pushing them down to 5th in the standings, KL Rahul and Marcus Stoinis will need support from the likes of Deepak Hooda and Nicholas Pooran to secure their third successive playoff appearance. While their spinners have struggled, the pace trio of Naveen-ul-Haq, Yash Thakur, and Mohsin Khan has been reliable. With so much at stake, this promises to be an exhilarating clash between two determined teams. Stay tuned for the toss and team news coming up shortly.

Hyderabad face a quick turnaround following their recent defeat, but they return home to finish the league stage with three matches to go. Despite their strong home record, having won three out of four games, they face a formidable opponent in Lucknow, whom they've never beaten in the history of the competition. Abhishek Sharma is currently enduring a lean patch, while Travis Head has been consistent in providing strong starts. The contributions from Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen will be more crucial if Marco Jansen continues to feature ahead of Aiden Markram. With T Natarajan and Pat Cummins leading the bowling attack, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar finding form, Hyderabad's bowling unit looks formidable.

Hello and a warm welcome, folks! Two intriguing results at the beginning of the week have added an extra layer of excitement to the playoff qualification race. And now, we have another high-stakes encounter lined up for you. Hyderabad will take on Lucknow at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in match number 57 of the 2024 Indian T20 League. Both teams find themselves stuck in a mid-table logjam, making this clash crucial for breaking free from that deadlock.

... MATCH DAY ...

With 56 matches completed and just 13 remaining in the league stage of the 17th edition of the 2024 Indian T20 League, it's time for match number 57, where Hyderabad will host Lucknow at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Both teams find themselves locked in a mid-table logjam with 6 wins from 11 games, but Hyderabad holds a slight advantage with a superior net run rate. Pat Cummins and his team enter this contest on the heels of a defeat against a struggling Mumbai side. Despite having a chance to break free from the mid-table congestion, they could not seal the deal that night. However, the silver lining for them is the opportunity to play all their remaining three games at home, providing them with a favourable chance to make it to the playoffs. While Travis Head has maintained his impressive form, Abhishek Sharma's recent performances have been lacklustre, failing to surpass 20 runs in the last three games. This might lead to the inclusion of Aiden Markram to bolster the batting department, which also features Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen. In the seam bowling department, Marco Jansen hasn't made a significant impact this season, relying instead on the Indian duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan to complement skipper Pat Cummins. On the other hand, after concluding their home fixtures, Lucknow are now set for a series of away games. Similar to their opponents, they suffered a defeat in their last match against Kolkata. KL Rahul's leadership has been exemplary, with his aggressive batting approach winning praise from Lucknow fans. However, Arshin Kulkarni used as an Impact Player in the past two games, has failed to deliver, potentially paving the way for the inclusion of Quinton de Kock or Kyle Mayers to strengthen the top order alongside Marcus Stoinis. Nicholas Pooran is yet to showcase his explosive batting prowess, but as Lucknow eye their third successive playoff qualification, the onus is on the hard-hitting West Indian to step up. In terms of bowling, Naveen-ul-Haq and Yash Thakur have formed a reliable seam-bowling duo, but the availability of the third seamer, Mohsin Khan, is uncertain due to a head injury sustained in the last game. Ravi Bishnoi has shouldered the spin-bowling responsibilities effectively, but Krunal Pandya will need to elevate his performance. Out of the 4 matches played at home so far, Hyderabad have come out on top thrice. However, they now face Lucknow, whom they have never beaten in the history of the competition, having lost all three of the past meetings. Will the fourth time be the charm for them? We shall find out.
