He mentions the influence of Brian Lara, under whom he worked extensively last year, and continues to stay in touch. Abhishek notes his strategy of waiting for the right balls, exploiting loose deliveries, and keeping the bowlers under pressure by maintaining a defensive mindset.

Jitesh Sharma, the captain of Punjab says that he enjoyed leading the side and is proud of his boys for their efforts. Adds that they posted a good total on the board without many overseas players and he thought they would defend it. Tells that his bowlers were good but credits Abhishek and Klaasen for their batting performance. Says that it has been a long couple of months and the break came at the perfect time. Ends by saying that they will support Kolkata in their game against Rajasthan.

Earlier in the evening, Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first. They got off to a flying start, with openers Atharva Taide and Prabhsimran Singh playing some scintillating shots. The Hyderabad bowlers struggled with their lines and lengths, allowing the Punjab openers to capitalize and score freely. At the end of the powerplay, Punjab had raced to 61 without loss. Taide was the first to depart, falling for a well-made 46 off 27 balls in the 10th over, bringing an end to a 97-run opening stand. Prabhsimran Singh continued to anchor the innings, bringing up a composed fifty. He found able support in Rilee Rossouw, and the duo added 54 runs for the second wicket. Prabhsimran was eventually dismissed for 71, while Rossouw narrowly missed out on his fifty, falling for 49. Punjab lost momentum briefly after Rossouw's dismissal, but stand-in skipper Jitesh Sharma provided the perfect finish. His quickfire unbeaten 32 off just 15 balls propelled Punjab to a formidable total of 214/5. For Hyderabad, T Natarajan was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets for 33 runs in his four overs. Pat Cummins and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth also chipped in with a wicket each but were on the expensive side. Their efforts, however, set the stage for their batters to chase down the total successfully. The match showcased the unpredictability and excitement that T20 cricket is known for. Hyderabad’s victory was a testament to their depth and resilience, as they overcame early setbacks to chase down a daunting target. Their bowlers, despite a few wayward overs, did enough to restrict Punjab to a manageable total, which their batters then chased down with calculated aggression and composure. Punjab, on the other hand, will reflect on missed opportunities and inconsistent performances that have plagued their season. Despite a strong start and some standout individual performances, they were unable to maintain the momentum needed to secure a win in this crucial match.

The chase for Hyderabad began on a shaky note. Travis Head, who has been in exceptional form, was dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball. This early setback brought Rahul Tripathi to the crease. Tripathi, unperturbed by the situation, adopted an aggressive approach from the outset. Partnering with Abhishek Sharma, the duo scored at a rapid pace. They put together a crucial 72-run stand for the second wicket before Tripathi was dismissed for a brisk 33. By the end of the powerplay, Hyderabad had reached 84/2, setting a solid foundation for their chase. Abhishek Sharma continued his aggressive onslaught, racing to his fifty off just 21 balls. Batting at number four, Nitish Reddy also played a vital role, showcasing some elegant strokes and keeping Punjab at bay. Abhishek eventually fell for a scintillating 66 off 28 balls, trying one shot too many and holing out in the deep. His dismissal brought Heinrich Klaasen to the crease, who joined forces with Reddy to keep the required run rate under control. The pair added 47 runs before Reddy was dismissed for a well-made 37, courtesy of Harshal Patel. Klaasen then took charge, playing some exquisite strokes and ensuring there were no further hiccups in the chase. However, he was bowled for 42 with Hyderabad still needing seven runs for victory. Despite the best efforts of Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel, who took two wickets each, Punjab failed to defend their total.

Hyderabad have chased down 215 runs with ease and are aiming for the second spot in the table, now they are waiting for the match between Kolkata and Rajasthan. Punjab finish 9th on the ladder and end their 2024 journey with a loss. As the dust settles on an exhilarating match, Hyderabad emerges victorious, defeating Punjab by four wickets to secure their eighth win in the Indian T20 League 2024. This triumph propels them to the second spot on the points table. The result of the evening game will now determine whether they play the first Qualifier or the Eliminator. In stark contrast, Punjab finds themselves finishing ninth on the table, having managed only five wins throughout the season.

Commentary

We are back for the chase! The players are making their way out to the middle now. Travis Head is the Impact Player for Hyderabad replacing T Natarajan and will open alongside Abhishek Sharma. Arshdeep Singh is the Impact Player for Punjab replacing Ashutosh Sharma. He will also start the proceedings with the ball. Here we go...

... THE RUN CHASE ...

Hyderabad, on the other hand, will be a bit disappointed with their bowling effort. The intensity in the field was missing in such a key game and they let the opposition take control from the start. Their bowlers struggled to create many opportunities and leaked runs as well. T Natarajan picked up a couple of wickets while Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Pat Cummins chipped in with one each. After not able to contain the batters in the middle overs, the hosts pulled things back a bit in the last few overs but the spell of Nitish Kumar Reddy shifted the momentum once again towards the visitors. Now, it is up to their batters to take up this challenge and once again the opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma will be the key in this chase. Join us in a bit for the second essay.

Atharva Taide is up for a quick chat. He states that the ball is coming onto the bat really well, allowing them to set a good score. He admits to feeling nervous at the start of the innings but gained confidence as he adjusted to the ball. Taide believes they have posted a strong total, reflecting the positive mindset in the dressing room. He emphasizes the importance of taking wickets inside the Powerplay to gain the upper hand. Noting that the pitch is gripping a bit, he asserts that with good intent on the field, they can secure the victory.

Punjab got off to a steady start with both openers taking their time for a few overs, but once they got going, they never looked back. Atharva Taide and Prabhsimran Singh started to score runs freely without taking much risks and added 97 runs for the first wicket before Taide was dismissed just missing out on his half-century. His opening partner continued to attack and notched up his fifty with Rilee Rossouw also firing from the other end. These two also scored more than 50 runs together but the opener lost his wicket in an unfortunate way. The South African departed on 49 and after that, they lost a bit of momentum. However, their skipper for this game, Jitesh Sharma smashed 32 off just 15 balls to take them to a huge total.

Punjab finishes with a flurry! Their skipper, Jitesh Sharma provides good momentum that they can take into their bowling innings. They have posted a big total on the board and it will be a stern challenge for the hosts to chase it down. Hyderabad has not been able to chase anything beyond 200 this season, but if they want to remain in the fight for second place, they have to do it now.

Punjab are in a great position to bat their opposition out of this game and post a huge total. Also, Jitesh Sharma comes out to the middle now.

Right then, we are all set for the game to start. The Umpires and the Players are taking the field for the First Innings. Prabhsimran Singh and Atharva Taide are the opening batters for Punjab and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will start the bowling attack for Hyderabad. Let's Play!

Pat Cummins, the captain of Hyderabad says that the atmosphere has been great at home. Adds that he is not too upset but would have liked to bat first as well. Tells that they have sticked with their aggressive batting approach and sometimes it has come off sometimes it didn't but they know how to navigate through different situations. Mentions that as a bowling unit they are pretty experienced and will look to restrict their opponents. Informs Rahul Tripathi comes in for a bowler.

Jitesh Sharma, the skipper of Punjab, announces that they have decided to bat first, confident in the wicket's favorable condition. He expresses pride and gratitude for leading the franchise and is pleased with the larger room he now has. He mentions that their options are limited since most overseas players have returned home, leaving only the talented Rilee Rossouw available for the game. He highlights the strong group of players waiting for their chance to shine, anticipating a good match to showcase their talent and efforts. Jitesh believes these players will give their best in the game.

Impact Players for Hyderabad - Umran Malik, Travis Head, Glenn Phillips, Washington Sundar, Jaydev Unadkat.

Hyderabad (Playing XI) - Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi (In place of Jaydev Unadkat), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Heinrich Klaasen (WK), Abdul Samad, Shahbaz Ahmed, Sanvir Singh, Pat Cummins (C), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, T Natarajan.

Impact Players for Punjab - Arshdeep Singh, Tanay Thyagarajan, Prince Choudhary, Vidwath Kaverappa, Harpreet Singh.

Punjab (Playing XI) - Prabhsimran Singh, Atharva Taide (In place of Jonny Bairstow), Rilee Rossouw, Shashank Singh, Jitesh Sharma (C/WK), Ashutosh Sharma (In place of Arshdeep Singh), Shivam Singh (In place of Sam Curran), Rishi Dhawan (In place of Nathan Ellis), Harpreet Brar, Harshal Patel, Rahul Chahar.

TOSS - The coin lands in favour of Punjab and they have elected to BAT first.

Punjab, on the other hand, once again had a disappointing season failing to make it to the playoffs. They have been pretty inconsistent and the injury to Shikhar Dhawan hasn't helped at all. Sam Curran led the side well but they couldn't win the crunch moments in a few close games that costed them a lot. Bairstow and Livingstone did not have the season everyone expected and they did not really had a settled team. However, there were some positives as well with how Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, two uncapped Indians bailed them out of a few difficult situations while Harpreet Brar and Arshdeep Singh has done well with the ball. Their highlight of the season will be that record-breaking chase against Kolkata. They might think of giving opportunities to a few other players but still want to get the win and end on a positive note. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

Hyderabad has been a formidable side and their batters have absolutely destroyed the bowling attacks of other teams. The dynamic opening duo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have dealt mostly in boundaries and is the most important reason that they are in the playoffs. They also have Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen in the middle order to add more firepower while uncapped Nitish Kumar Reddy has also impressed with his performances. Their bowling has been a bit inconsistent but Bhuvneshwar Kumar has found his form at the right time while T Natarajan has been excellent throughout the season. Captain Pat Cummins also has been fantastic with his leadership and will want to get the win here to put pressure on Rajasthan to win their last game. The battle for the second spot is between these two teams and it is important because then you get two bites at the cherry to make it to the final.

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the penultimate league game of the Indian T20 League 2024. We already have our final four teams but there is still a lot to play for in the remaining couple of league matches. It is time for the destructive Hyderabad side to take on Punjab and a win will keep the chances of finishing second alive for the hosts while the visitors will play for pride and try to finish the season on a high.

... MATCH DAY ...

As the group stages of the Indian T20 League draw to a close, anticipation builds for the penultimate match, where Hyderabad will clash with Punjab at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad for match number 69. The Pat Cummins-led Hyderabad team would have been slightly disappointed after sharing a point in their previous rain-affected game against Gujarat. Although that result has ensured their place in the playoffs, it has slightly diminished their chances of finishing in the top two. Nevertheless, the in-form Orange Army is expected to go all out, aiming to conclude the group stages with a victory to reach 17 points after which they will be hoping for a Rajasthan loss against Kolkata, which would secure them the second spot. Hyderabad's batting unit has been exceptional, and there is no reason to think they will approach this game against Punjab any differently. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma remain the key players to watch at the top of the order. Pat Cummins has led the bowling attack with distinction, receiving consistent support from the rest of the pacers, which has been crucial to their victories. On the other hand, Punjab will be playing their final game of the season and will be eager to end on a high note with a win. They come into this match on the back of a commanding victory against Rajasthan, which will give them a much-needed confidence boost. However, the absence of key players like Sam Curran and Jonny Bairstow is a significant setback for a team that has struggled this season and has already lost players due to injuries. Punjab is yet to name their captain for this game but regardless of who it would be, the challenge of striking the right balance of the team to go against one of the strongest contenders this season will not be an easy task. Punjab’s bowling unit, which has performed well throughout the season, will need to step up and deliver a strong performance against Hyderabad's potent batting lineup. Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh will bear the responsibility of leading the bowling attack, while Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma will need to continue their good form. A victory in this final game would provide Punjab with a much needed morale boost heading into the next season. This penultimate game of the group stages is certain to be an entertaining affair. Can Hyderabad reach the 300-run total they have been aiming for in this game? Or will Punjab thwart their efforts with an extraordinary performance? We shall soon find out!
